Ok ladies and gents, after hanging around here for almost a year, I figured its time to post a thread of my own.
*Please do not take the poll unless you're an owner/until you take delivery... Thank you.*
As one of the very hard working JNAP UAW workers many folks here find joy in consistently ragging on, I'm very interested in OWNER reviews of their new GC's. We work hard to build a quality product day after day, and although we're not perfect, I'm curious to know how much of that effort has been translated to you all in your purchase(s). There's a lot of negativity out there, and people seem to fish for anything to discredit us and the products we make, but instead of responding individually to the ignorance, I figure a simple review thread is the best way to settle the matter. If you, and I mean those who actually have bought the truck, feel like its a great vehicle and was well worth your money, I'd love to hear about it. And if you think this car is the biggest POS you've ever wasted money on, and will never buy another vehicle "Imported from Detroit" again, I wanna hear that too!
Basically I'm just looking for honest reviews from owners, so that those who may be RESPECTFULLY skeptical, can see for themselves whether or not we deserve their business, as well as how long we will hold the title for the most awarded SUV - EVER! Thx in advance guys and gals!
ZeidlerN,
I'm going to pick up my 2014 Summit tomorrow. Did I read your post right ? Do you have the LIFETIME - UNLIMITED MAX CARE Extended warrantee on your 2014 or were you referring to the Jeep you bought when you were an employee in '03?.
I inquired about the lifetime and was told that they don't offer it on the 2014. (NY/NJ)
Got mine yesterday, everything I have tried works great so far and I love this car! I will post my initial thoughts Sunday afternoon after I do a weekend road trip; But in the limited driving I have done so far, releasing the accelerator stops the car much sooner than I am used to in any car, feels like when I manually engine break in the mountains, but it doesn't do so in drive mode. So I am going to have to get in the groove of switching between modes when driving, plus hitting the Eco button off when I get in and hitting the QL parking mode button when I get at my destination.
Urrrggghhhhh... Mine's back at the dealership too. Left my wife and 5-year-old stranded. Shut itself off in the middle of the road. Second time in 338 miles that it's dead. Worked fine all weekend for me running errands, then totally freaked my wife out by dying in the road as she was headed for a doctor appointment. My last nerve is fried. Nothing like getting a frantic call from your wife with a kid in the car and you're 30 miles away and can't be there to help.
sorry for the panic of dead stop in middle of road. Mine has been at the dealers for 9 days now. they still have no idea what to do, or fix. They tell me STAR hasn't gotten back with them yet. I would be real careful before shelling out $54,000 for a Summit. If i had to do it over, i would of waited until i knew they had the bugs worked out. The crazy thing is, they did a 33 mile quality assurance test on my vehicle before it left Detroit. You would of thought they might have caught some of the problems this vehicle is having, instead of just shipping it to me. I guess they wanted the cash and figured they would deal with the problems later. I would love to see the results from the Quality test, but that will never happen. I just have about 20 days to go, and i will be filling a case with my attorney for a refund. The BMW is looking better by the day. Jeeps just aren't what they used to be. So SAD!!!! And, the Jeep customer service hotline is horrible. They will tell you whatever, just to get you off the phone. If this was my company, i would be concerned about losing loyal customers. I have owned many Jeeps in my life and this is just ridiculous.
I wanted to further point out that the dealership, mechanic and service manager have all been the BEST! they have tried their hardest to get this taken care of, and gone out of their way to make me comfortable while i am waiting for a fix. It is all on Chrysler. I would recommend my local dealership to anyone. They truly have the best customer service.
That's excellent to hear. Does that dealer sell any other brands besides Jeep maybe? :O
I just can't believe these wonderful vehicles can be ruined by all these quality issues. It's such a damn shame. We LOVE the vehicle, but just cannot abide the car shutting down in the middle of the road. This is why we walked away from VW years ago -- we loved the cars, but they were in the dealership every other week it seemed. Then we went to Subarus, Mazda, Saab, Acura and had excellent experiences with all of them. This is the first time in 15 years or so that we have run into quality control issues. I really wanted to believe in Jeep/Chrysler, but honestly at this point, I would never recommend them to anyone, even if Jeep does figure out what's wrong with my GC. That's where I'm at right now. I will be keeping my 2002 Wrangler though, which has been wonderful.
I've bought MANY new vehicles in my lifetime...both foreign and domestic (this is my first domestic again after 14 years), but I've NEVER had a warning light go on while driving the new vehicle off the dealers lot. Luckly my Jeep wasn't hard to fix, and it was done quickly. I still can't believe though that no one at the dealership didn't know about the warning light. To think I was driving around for a almost a week with no seat airbag for the passenger!
I would say though that the customer service at the foreign dealerships (Subaru, Nissan, Toyota) is light years ahead of the domestic dealerships. The "loaner" I was given for instance while the dealership fixed my Jeep...not only was it the smelliest vehicle I have ever been given (reeked of smoke & ash), but the front rotors were so warped that I had to keep my highway speeds low fearing a panic stop.
I was supposed to pick up my 2014 Summit today but due to a schedule conflict I will be picking it up tomorrow. It was just delivered to the dealership on Tuesday. I'm supposed to be taking a trip with it this weekend to go camping. After reading this thread I'm starting to get a little nervous ! What am I in for ?
Please, keep in mind that the people who got wonderful, working vehicles are out enjoying them. If my vehicle was working, I would have made one post about how great it is and moved on. Am I mad about what happened? Yes. Do I think there is a widespread issue with all Jeeps? No. Chances are, your summit will work out great, and you will be very happy. I hope that is the case for you.
Just to balance out the reports, I've now had my '14 Summit V8 for two weeks with zero problems. I did a three day 2,000km trip last week which also involved some semi-serious off roading. Every system in the vehicle was put to the test including low range, hill descent control, all height settings, emergency brake alert (whew! - it saved my ass), and I love the adaptive cruise control. Highway cruising in this vehicle superb, and I'm getting about 21mpg (80% highway, 20% in town).
My only issue is that it won't download my phone's address book (Samsung S3).
Otherwise, having come from a 2012 Mercedes ML350 I can say that the Summit is in many ways a superior car. And by the way, the Mercedes had a couple of problems that required dealer visits in the first few weeks, while so far the JGC has had none.

I am also coming from a mercedes benz ML 350 (2009) which was a great vehicle with upgraded HK sound sports package 20" tires and lighting package. However I find my new 2014 Jeep Grand cherokee Overland v8 Hemi a superior overall vehicle with no problems so far. The options I have in the 14 Overland, would easily run over $70,000 on a new ML350. The cool thing about the overland is that it still has some Mercedes built in it's DNA. I am loving it!!
I've had mine with zero issues. I have a little over a thousand miles on it and it is great. I am currently in Chicago. Drove here from Atlanta and it was the best road trip I have had. Adaptive cruise control is awesome! Coming from a wrangler unlimited, which I loved, and being a jeep guy, this truck has been the best I've owned. Uconnect has had no issues and no flaws on the outside. I am a very happy GC owner!
I love mine too. My gf gets to drive the sedan now. I feel like a lot of guys are calling this JGC their "mid life crisis"... I can't imagine what I'll be buying at mine. I'm only 25, still have time I guess for the red corvette or shelby mustang. Right now I love this Overland.
marosenb: I'm feel so bad for your misfortune ! Very honorable for you to offer kind remarks for my pick-up! My mom should've named me "Murphy" because my style is making lemonade (when handed lemons). I hope to get blessed with a good truck !
torifile & adthebadstud: this is half mid-life crisis for me (40yrs OLD in Dec, which is why I went with the Summit) & Half necessity as I need a daily driver that won't make me sleep at work during every snow storm and can tow 6,000+ a few times a year, (which brought me to the JGC 4x4).
Can't wait for my pick-up tomorrow but hoping to drop the "Murphy's law" for a more refined version of me in my 40's - To be Continued ... - LOL
My Jeep is confused. I mentioned yesterday that it doesn't raise to OR1 when switching to sand mode. I went to the beach this morning and, as expected, had to raise the Jeep with the button. When I restarted the Jeep to leave it reverted to Auto which is normal. The height was still at OR1. When I switched to sand mode it lowered itself to normal ride height. Another press of the button raised it again.
Wish I had more positive to say, but so far its been a giant headache. Basically, I took delivery on 4/24. While going over the car, there was some pieces of the Unconnect, on the Nav settings, that were greyed out and not responding. So my salesman had a technician come out to look at it, and took it in the back for an update. 30 minutes later they came back and said the system was dead, I need a new unconnect (unbelievable). They said it would be two days, and I made an appointment to go back on saturday for them to replace. So they call me friday, the 26th, and say unfortunately the piece is on backorder and their not sure when its coming in. Needless to say I flipped out. I'm paying for thousands of dollars worth of features (bluetooth, nav, backupcamera, radio) that I cant use. I cant even tell what the temperature is in the car. They offered to put me in a loaner but I refused. Obviously, I'm paying for a BRAND NEW CAR, and I want to drive my brand new car. I exchanged emails with Chrysler and they apologized and gave me an ETA of 5/15. The word "furious" cannot accurately describe how I feel. If another week goes by I'll probably take them up on the loaner offer. Still waiting for the dealership, or chrysler, to offer much, much more in the form of oil changes, washes, etc...but so far nothing.
Also, the service guy told me over the phone (haven't gone to pick it up yet) that the owner of the dealership was there and noticed my plates were from another dealership. And that he wanted to know:
A: if they could change them out and put their dealer plates and frame in?
B: was there something that happened or why did I go to a dealership that was an hour away instead of the one that is less than a mile from my office? He must have asked around because he knew that I had emailed back and forth with their internet guys a few times and it just didn't work out.
Answer to A was of course, no. I am going to put my college alumni plate frame there when I get my dmv plates.
Answer to B was (i was trying to not throw anyone under the bus) the other dealership responded the quickest with the best deal and knew the most about the vehicle.
It will be interesting if the owner tries to talk to me when I get in there to pick her up.
I posted this in the another thread too, but in case anyone was interested in an update:
Got my JGC back!
Hopefully that is the last round of issues. I am not holding my breath, but we will see.
I have to say, the dealership has been great. As frustrated as I have been, they have handled everything so well.
I wish I could say the same for Chrysler customer care. They really made a frustrating situation worse. Seriously, when I ask them what my options are, telling me to trade my vehicle in for a loss. Are you kidding me?!?
As for my Jeep: They told me that the broken left catalytic converter caused the first issue. When that went, it put strain/messed with the left oxygen sensors, but that issue did not show up until I was driving around after the first repair.
Still no mention on the phantom electric issues. They are still hoping it was a one time quirk.
Well Chevy, I picked up my 2014 Overland on Monday. 200 mile trip home, through the mountains, 22 mpg and climbing I like that! I like the v6 8 speed combo. The only time I missed the hemi in my 2011 is when passing on 2 lanes roads. A few quality Issues. 3 of the 4 windows had the dreaded seal lip tucked in, couple of seconds work on each and problem gone. The piece of carpet that slides in the luggage compartment when you put the rear seats up or down was bent up. I would bet that dealer predelivery did this. Fixed it with a 2 day application of a heavy book (remember those?) I figured my kindle didn't have the needed heft. Passenger side front door sticks out slightly, will have this adjusted next time it is in the dealership. The left rear side of the hood sticks out above the cowl, This is not noticeable and all the other lines on the hood are perfect, so not going to mess with it. The steering wheel is canted ever so slightly to the right. I probably wouldn't notice this except that I used to be an alignment tech, and we don't have that many straight roads around here anyway. The select terrain control module was not snapped into place. Again an easy fix, but that really should have been caught before the vehicle reached me. The billet paint is flawless as far as I have been able to tell. It looks good on a cloudy day and brilliant on a sunny one. Only real glitch, and wondering if any one else has seen this, the eco light is now amber, not green. I noticed this during my return trip and it has stayed that way. Owners manual only mentions a green color. Eco mode seems to be working, quick shifts throttle lag etc and switch to sport mode changes this noticeably. any ideas on this? Chevy you should have the Tennessee's finest that I owe you by now. I sent it In Care Of Milous LOL! Seriously, PM me sometime about my whisky debt. Over all great vehicle so far, and build quality, features and interior are better than many many vehicles that are at much higher price points. Good Job Thanks
Hey can you shoot a couple pics of that hood issue? I know you said it's not a big deal, but I'd like to look into it and see what happened. You said the lines seem even, so I'm curious if its a bad hood, or the brackets are bent on one side or something.
They're always on me for suggestions of how to improve processes and stuff, so I'm gonna start laying this shit on them and maybe they'll leave me alone. Or fix what needs fixin!
I just picked up a 2014 Laredo E from the dealer on Monday. Got the Black Forest Green which is an amazing color. So far, we are loving the Jeep and the gas mileage has been averaging 24-25 which is outstanding! We have had a glitch with Uconnect, but I am hopeful that the Uconnect update will fix it. My dealer had no idea about it, which shocked me. First Jeep here, but I am sold...so far.
I don't take my truck out of Eco mode. It will never surpass the performance of my 335, so why bother? Maybe when I'm climbing in the mountains I'll do it but not for puttering around town.
The ECO mode is the default because it gives the best mileage for the EPA ratings. If it was optional the ratings would have to be lower and sales would be affected.
On the Hemi dropping into Sport mode gives a remarkable increase in performance. I never bother turning ECO off. It's either on (around town) or I pull back on the shifter and get whip lash when needed.
And I'm dumb. In the light of day, I could see that you need to push inwards on the stalk, not twist it to make the washers spray. All is good so far, then.
Just picked mine up. All doors and tailgate are aligned properly. Uconnect appears to be working (so far). 2 minor imperfections in the paint (without a doubt from shipping). Only 8mi on the clock. Taking it for a long weekend camping so hopefully I make it home ! Hoping for the best ! Not brave enough to weigh in on the poll for this thread yet.
Hi Bill:
Your reference to the '61 Chevy with the 2 speed Powerglide transmission brings back memories. I had a '62 and '64. First cars for my wife and I.
