That's in reverse, right? What about in drive? Can you pull forward with the seatbelt on and the door open?

I would imagine you can, but I want to confirm before I allow them to do this to mine.

I align my vehicle to marks on my driveway to get it into my garage without scraping the passenger side (right) or crowding the other vehicle in the garage on the driver side (left). I imagine I could do it, albeit very awkwardly, if I had to stop each time before opening the door to look, but I usually just roll forward slowly and adjust on the fly as I pull into the garage. I haven't tried tilting the mirror down, so I'm not sure if that's an alternative as well.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

This was really interesting. If I put the car in Drive, door open, seat belt on, foot off the brake I just get an EVICTION message "car not in park". When I take the seat belt off, NO CHANGE! It never goes into Park.

I am thinking actually that is proper IF you simply unbuckled with no other change...that scenario the software knows you are still in car (able to control) since electronically it sensed ONLY the unbuckle as an additional change....

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

Here's an interesting (well I thought it was interesting) article on the historical context of innovative shifter design foibles:
