Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

Shifter was a little quirky when I first bought the jeep but I picked it up quickly no issues in normal day to day driving. the one situation I would say isn't stellar is when you want to shift quickly in a panic situation. say I miss judged a u turn(I am human) and there is on coming traffic, now I need to quickly back up slightly slam it back in drive before the traffic gets to me. fumbling with it in a panic hitting N or P while trying to hit R is never that smooth of a process, slamming it back to drive is fine though. other cars I could easily pull a panic maneuver like that.

I guess I don't really understand people not being able to get it into park though, its either in park or its not, if you cant put the cell phone down long enough to make sure you are in park well maybe you should. maybe the same people who cant put the cell phone down long enough to push the button to turn the engine off and were complaining about filling their garages with exhaust?

Shifter is a little different and may need to pay a little more attention to it but not sure its a recall worthy

It has nothing to do with "understanding how it works". It is NOT INTUITIVE Nor as Reliable as it Should Be. People should be able to use an automatic transmission shifter with their EYES CLOSED. The shifter in the 2014/15 WK2 is a poorly design unit. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have multiple threads about it. Nor would FCA have changed the design on the 2016 WK2.

Yup... I agree with pretty much everything you wrote.

That is my primary issue with this shifter as well.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

So I went back and read the manual. It is pretty definite about firm pressure on the brake pedal and the button on the shifter and LOOKING and WAITING to see if it is in the gear you want. I suspect I am moving too fast for this shifter and probably easing off either the button or the pedal before the shifter can register a complete move, say from drive to park. Sometimes it is neutral or reverse but has given the pushback feel like it has gone all the way into park. Electronic digital devices have the drawback that they cannot deal with "approximation" but things have to be exact. Analog/mechanical devices will work in a "close enough" situation, hence the mechanical levers always allowed my fast movements. My issue with this shifter is its inability to handle a dangerous situation where speedy reaction and focus outside the vehicle are critical.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

I too, have accidentally ended up in reverse (instead of park), but I have been smart enough to work it out before exiting.

To make this idiot proof, Jeep could introduce a minor change. Many cars have pressure sensors in the seats to detect seat belt usage. Surely they could detect "driver not in seat" and "driver door open" then force the transmission into PARK.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

For everyone on their cellphones too much to get in park correctly, perhaps we need a new "text to park" feature ... text the word "PARK" to 14JEEP and your Jeep goes into park mode!

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion investigated by Feds

I always put my car in neutral and handbrake on red light. There is couple of times, I thought I was in Neutral, it turns out to be Drive and end up shifted into Sport Mode. Also, it's really annoy me every time I park, I have to put the car in Park before shift to reversed. That's one of reason I am thinking trading in my 14 HEMI to a 16 Diesel.

I CAN CONFIDENTLY USE MINE WITH MY EYES CLOSED. AND I KNOW MY WIFE WOULD BE ABLE TO AS WELL.

FWIW, an engineer once told me that the most stressful part of an automatic transmission's life is being put into gear. I used to do the same thing (put it in neutral or park for long red lights) before that.

Probably multiply that x10 or so when the weight of the vehicle is resting, even slightly, on the tranny instead of the parking brake. Ever notice that THUNK when somebody's parked your car on an incline without setting the brake, and you have to yank it out of Park?

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

If you guys want to see a really confusing shifter, go to the Buick website and look at the 2017 Lacrosse. The shifter looks like the short throw one like we have. However, starting at the forward position, you have N, then P, then closest to you it's D. To get to reverse, you have to go forward to N, and then move the lever over to the left. Also, the sport mode button is on the dash similar to the Grands '16 model.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion investigated by Feds

So while the shifter is not brilliant, it is not that bad.

One easy fix would be to program a feature Mercedes Benz has, if you are not moving and are pressing the engine stop button, the gear will go into parking by itself. Smart and easy.
