I apologize if someone has already said this but...

It is not a good idea to create a "new" type of shifter that goes against the standard in most every other car.

It is very hard to retrain one's brain to use this new type of shifter after driving 30+ years. Granted there were the old push button shifters and over the years there have been other versions but by and large all shifters have been virtually the same in function in most vehicles. Newbies to driving will take to it quickly I would bet since they aren't already "trained", but new drivers are also not probably able to afford to buy a new jeep, unless they are driving mom/dad's jeep.

Just the other day I thought I was in park but was not. Easy to tell once my Jeep started to roll but you'd think after 2.5 years I would not make mistakes.

And in an emergency situation - to put it into gear quickly? Forget about that working well (like someone else just posted).

Another instance in car design of form over function.

Don't get me wrong I love my ride but the shifter is not my favorite.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

When I first drove my 2014 Overland it took me about 15 seconds to learn this shifter. I really have to wonder if the people having all the problems shifting this thing should even be driving.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

I don't know about everyone else, but if mine is in Reverse, the backup camera comes on screen, etc. Very hard to miss I am in Reverse.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

the ZF Transmission is a bullet proof one, used all over german cars.
In my W212 AMG the lever is exactly the same, except for the park function.
100% THE SAME.

I saw couple of 2016 models where they changed it to the old style, ugly looking, big a$$ lever.

That's 14.9 seconds longer than it should take.

It took me all of 2 seconds to figure out the shifter and run it thru its paces. But it has it faults compared to a traditional gated shifter.

With a gated shifter, going to ANY drive mode is pretty much idiot proof & requires no special timing, no visual confirmation, and no finesse. The 2014/15 WK2 shifter isn't nearly that well designed.

Most transitions are just as easy & idiot proof as a gated shifter.

Park-to-Drive...............Pull all the way straight back after pressing the button...EASY

Park-to-Reverse...........Pull straight back 1 detent after pressing the button....Not Hard (but not as easy as a Gated Shifter)

Drive-to-Park...............Push the shifter all the way forward after pressing the button.....EASY

Drive-to-Neutral..........Push the shifter forward without pressing the button.....EASY

Reverse-to-Drive.........Pull all the way straight back after pressing the button.....EASY

Reverse-to-Park...........Push the shifter all the way forward after pressing the button.......EASY

Drive-to-Reverse.........Method 1: Push the shifter forward without pressing the button 1 detent (into Neutral). Then move the shifter 1 detent forward after pressing the button.......NOT EASY. This method requires 2 separate actions, where a gated shifter only needs 1 (push shifter forward all the way while also pushing to the Right, after pressing a button)

Drive-to-Reverse.........Method 2: Push the shifter forward while pressing the button 2 detents, past Neutral & into Reverse.......NOT EASY. This method requires Visual Confirmation along with proper timing or finesse in order to "land" on Reverse. Push forward too little & you'll land on Neutral. Push forward too much & you'll end up in Park.
