2014 Gear Shift Confusion investigated by Feds

NHTS investigating 2014 JGC for possible recall/fix to minimize user confusion, 130 accidents, 30 injuries, 856,000 vehicles. Any guesses as to how many of the user issues were operator error? See:

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

"but FCA said it did so to increase customer satisfaction and not because of safety concerns"

I call total BS on this statement. They could careless about customer satisfaction. To me they only care about production numbers and being number one all the time.

On a personal level, there has been a few times i engaged the wrong gear (totally admit to it). The selector definitely can be tricky, especially for first time users or if your in a rush and don't pay enough attention. I would say this happens to me once a month on average. Not enough for me to complain about, but enough for me to think why they did away with the '11-'13 shifter and why they went to the new design for the 2016.

I think Chrysler should step up and offer a retrofit solution to install the 2016 gear selectors in the '14-'15 models (at the owners choice).

2014 Gear Shift Confusion

There are times i find it goes into reverse or neutral instead of park. I think that happens if i let off the button too early as i am pushing it forward. Overall i like the shifter though

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

I'm conflicted on how I feel about the shifter in my '15. On one hand there was a learning curve and I am constantly having to pay close attention when shifting from gears which is both good and bad. It does make me pay attention which I think is good, however I'd not feel comfortable letting somebody drive it who's not done so without giving them an overview of what to look for and this is a negative aspect. I'm thinking valet service, parents who are used to older style shifters, etc.

I am used to the process now and find that if I pay close attention I'm fine, but on occasion still find myself in the wrong gear after 7 months. Driving vehicles with standard types of shifters seems odd now but nothing I can't get used to again. I wouldn't be opposed to having mine retrofitted with an updated shifter that is more intuitive if FCA offered it as I don't think shifting gears in a vehicle should be this much of a challenge.

They were probably all operator error. Its not that these things are malfunctioning I'm sure most are operating as designed. Its just that when they are operating as designed many people are confused with the operation as designed, which equates to a questionable design if so many people have confusion with it. The wording in that article sounds like it could be getting bad enough that they maybe headed in the direction of a recall. That would be interesting on how they solve that one? replace it with the 2016 setup? that would be a bit costly but who knows. I am fine with it now but there was a little getting used to it when new. I don't think I would want the 2016 shifter at this point, im used to this one enough now and I don't like the movement of that sport button.

"Agency tests found that operating the center console shift lever "is not intuitive and provides poor tactile and visual feedback to the driver, increasing the potential for unintended gear selection,"

Apparently, people don't understand what the "P" means on the shifter, or the dash display. FFS. Like the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink it. Pay attention people!! If you can't take the time to verify whether or not you're in PARK before exiting your expensive, 5000 pound vehicle, YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING!!! This is just ridiculous.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion

CNN is reporting on this issue and have to say, I found the same problem when I first bought the Jeep. There is a slight lag (most likely software) from a typical automatic shifter. It caused me a couple of times when I was in a hurry to not put the car fully in park (land in neutral). This isn't a "hey, dumbass learn how to drive a car," but a potential liability for Jeep. Now that I'm used to the lag, I have no problems. It just took a little while to get used to the difference.

Maybe they will be retrofitting everyone's 2014/2015 with the new shifter ;-P

From the article sounds like just a software fix will alleviate some confusion and injuries such as shutting off the vehicle if not in park when door opens. Maybe different and louder warnings and indicators using the existing screens.

Personally I like the shifter ... but like others have said, if you let others drive it might be a tad nervous or point out the shifter function to them beforehand. But then again, gotta do that with the keyless start too ... and where's the gas cap ... and ... oh progress vs. personal injury lawyers who love class actions.

Re: 2014 Gear Shift Confusion investigated by Feds

"Many of the crashes occurred soon after the vehicles were purchased."

That is why they are probing this more. FCA has a safety issue even if it's the driver not knowing how to properly ensure the shifter is in Park. Regardless they have a liability on their hands. It needs to be corrected before someone dies.
