Automatic decisions should be made by drivers that are aware of their surroundings and some technology with that doesn't hurt. It's there to help some drivers..you know the ones texting while driving etc and doing other dumb &ss stuff when their attention is supposed to be on the road and watching out for the other folks who aren't paying attention.

Morons should be taken off the road--not provided with devices to enable their idiotic driving practices.

Excursion,

Lankness has the correct info there. First I would adjust the system to "near" so that it is less sensitive. If it still causes you grief, you can turn it off.

Seriously??? You have never once been distracted while driving. Had a phone ring, drop something, have a pretty woman wave at you, day dream, back out of a parking spot without being able to see cross traffic, not see something in your blind spot, look to your left when someone in front of you slams on their brakes......... If not, then you are the most perfect person in the world or in denial. We all all human, and even the best drivers make mistakes. That is why they make this technology, because humans make mistakes. Also, look at the technology and devices in this jeep. There is plenty here to distract all of us. It has the voice recognition, but drivers will be drawn to look at the EVIC and Uconnect screens.

Even better example:

Friend merging on the highway from the on ramp glances over her shoulder to check her blind spot at the moment the car in front of her is scared by a passing transport and slams on their brakes.

That extra second with the collision avoidance system could have saved her many injuries or the entire collision (lots of witnesses so even though she rear ending the other lady, no charges were laid because of the way it happened).

As I have noted in other threads here before the FCW+ system is designed to minimize injury, not prevent every accident but in the above scenario, it may have done both.

Makes sense. Put technology in to distract you; then put more technology in to protect you from the distractions created by the other technology.

That is like putting you on a medication to protect you from the side affects of another medication, and then adding a third to protect you from the side affects of the second and so on until you are taking pills all day long.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the NTSB ban some of the current technology because it does distract drivers. In Minnesota, it is illegal to text and drive. Irrelevant if it is hand free, it is still illegal - but I still see people doing it all the time. Last week I was at a stop light, and a cop next to me was texting. Too many idiots on the road, but we all get distracted, or in Willx's example, doing the right thing, and another idiot causes problems.

Side note, I am in the medical field, and what you describe, happens all the time. Unfortunately sometimes it is needed.

I like how you missed all of the other valid points about other people on the road and focused on the issue of looking at the radio or the fuel economy. How did you think Shannon's only purpose with the FCW+ system was the technology in the car when that was one sentence. Plus the Voice Recognition technology is there to STOP people from looking away.

Anyway, this stuff actually works and it isn't just to insulate people from the tech in the car... it will save lives and minimize injuries that has been proven well beyond systems like lane departure warnings. You should maybe read a little bit of the research on this subject.

I have NEVER seen this as a buffer for doing stupid stuff like texting while driving but I am definitely not perfect so I am glad it is there to help with my imperfections .

It appears as if I offended you with my response to Shannon. Shannon was not offended. Are you? If so, why? Am I not entitled to have an opinion different than yours?

I think he was just pointing out how you avoid all the valid reasoning and pick on the one borderline reason as justification for why it's bad.

I didn't read offense in what he posted

Correct, I am not offending in the slightest. Just looking at the points of the conversation.

SE even Shannon pointed out that there were other reasons and pointed at my comment. I was merely noting you did not respond to the entire position on the matter is all. No offense intended either!

Only morons don't have an open mind to at least listen to others views, that has nothing to do with driving, technology won't fix that.
