People buy Jeeps for a lot of reasons, buy fuel economy is definitely not one of those reasons. A hybrid goes against everything a Jeep stands for. They are like oil and water. I originally thought that the Fiat buyout of Chrysler was a good thing, but they are DESTROYING Jeep's heritage one step at a time. The new Cherokee is a disgrace to the Jeep name, especially when you take into consideration the fact that it ruined the Cherokee nameplate as well. They are ruining another historic nameplate, Jeepster, with an even smaller FWD crossover based on the Fiat 500L. I've also heard rumors that the next-gen Wrangler won't have solid axles (possibly the most painful), and now I'm hearing about Hybrids?!?! Unbelievable. In 5 years, Jeep won't be any different than Kia or Hyundai. If Fiat wants to sell these vehicles, they should use the Alfa or Fiat nameplate, not Jeep. Let Jeep be, please.
I agree with the Cherokee nameplate, the new Cherokee should have had a whole new nameplate. As for the Hybrid versions, with tighter restrictions on emissions and everything else blah blah blah that may be the only route it can go. I do think the Jeep engineers have the creativity and enginuity to keep the Hybrid farters out of the line-up. I really don't think they will gamble to far away from Jeeps heritage that is has had for so long, however that heritage may have to be built upon in order to keep a brand we all love and enjoy in the market. I agree we dont buy Jeeps for gas mileage but in a faster than ever growing and changing economy the rest of the world isn't going to understand the Jeep heritage enough to care like we do.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

A hybrid system *could* be a good thing, if done correctly. If they set the hybrid system up to maximize performance (such as they did in the McLaren P1, I would be perfectly fine with it). Lots of torque at 0 RPM would be amazing in off-road situations. However, with some of the other stuff Fiat has been doing, I feel like all the hybrid system would do is increase fuel economy and kill performance as it has done in so many other vehicles. I guess we will just have to see.

Marlon, we need you to hurry up and get to the top before it is too late.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Having owned hybrid vehicles I cannot agree that such a setup would "ruin" any product line, including Jeep. The low-end torque and extra horsepower could actually be amazing in certain situations. The Highlander Hybrid Limited I owned for over six years prior to buying my Summit could "excite" all four tires when I had to nail it to get out of our driveway onto the busy road that passes in front of our house. On dry pavement. And the 25+ mpg was certainly more attractive to the 16+ I get now in regular rural driving. (warm weather) And done right, hybrid can bring that extra fuel economy that is being demanded of the entire industry. While I'd prefer the diesel personally in the JGC to get these benefits, I certainly wouldn't write off interest in a well-designed hybrid design, either...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I agree 100%. I hope they find a balance with keeping the off-road prowess of the Jeep heritage without killing performance. The current Jeep line up is changing. Some good, some bad. Time will tell.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Vehicles with IFS and IRS have won the Baja 1000 and the Dakar raids.

Until there is a change in parties next several years will be all about gas mileage and CO2.

My advice make a Greens's day and pass gas!

Are you saying that the next-gen GC and Wrangler, the only two vehicles (in my opinion) that are remotely true to Jeep's roots, are being ruined by Fiat as well?

I hope that's not what he is saying. He may also be saying that they have already veered away from the Jeep roots as it is. I think the Cherokee is the first prime example. While I will say the Cherokee's interior is nice the exterior is lacking.

Ding!

I will go more in-depth as time goes along.

As far as the IFS Wrangler...

allpar.com is your friend.

The TJ COULD have been IFS *and* IRS.

The KJ Liberty was IFS before Daimler even got into the picture so you can't blame them for that.

They are TRYING to stay at least with a solid rear axle however. Idk on the front axle however. Of course they could just say screw it and go to independent front and rear anyways.
