Right now, I just checked the current prices, we are paying $1.47 AU per lt for regular unleaded and $1.45 for diesel. So I think our saving would be much better.

The option cost for the V8 or CRD is $5k AU which takes a bit to gain back, but as others have pointed out, over the V8 CRD would win hands down for savings and the V6 is no where near as good at moving the 2300kg lump. To drive a V6 and then a CRD there is no comparison, the CRD feels like it was made for the car, the V6 feels very under powered.

If you are running the numbers on diesel vs gas don't forget the cost of urea which will have to be replenished at each oil change. Also, diesels generally have a shorter oil change interval than gas as well as a larger capacity oil sump. Then there is the matter of diesel fuel filtration which will cost more to maintain. $$$$$$. Possibly our Aussie or European friends can give some guidance here although I believe they do not have to deal with urea.

I wasn't to impressed with the 5spd when I test drove a 11, same thoughts as you. If what we hear that the V6 gets a lot better with the 8spd, I shouldn't be disappointed. I figured now you wife has finally talked you into getting one instead of the Cherokee/Liberty.

I'm interested is a diesel too, for towing and overall economy.

It's hard to do the numbers what with the ever changing price difference between regular and diesel fuel. Using Milious (thanks) 2014 EPA combined mpg, 2WD diesel and gas V6 have equal fuel cost at a diesel price premium of $0.75/US gallon. Over the last two years diesel has averaged about $0.40/USgal more than regular gasoline.

A VW Toureg seems like the nearest competitor to the 14 WK2 in gas V6, diesel V6 and 8 spd trans.

Fuelly.org shows data for 32 owners over 331,000 miles for 2012 diesel of 25.1 mpg. That's 11% higher than the EPA combined figure.

Far fewer gas Toureg owners participate. Taking 2011 and 2012 together shows 4 cars, 19,000 miles 18.0 mpg, 4% lower than EPA combined.

Edmunds True Cost to Own shows a wash for the five year cost of a gas Lux model vs diesel Lux. I imagine higher capital and maintenance costs are exactly offset by lower fuel cost and less depreciation.

My take-away from this data is the CRD gives the operating cost of the gas V6 with the real world (not drag strip) power, especially when towing, of the Hemi. Beating the EPA estimate by 10% would be icing on the cake.

Some posters here and many at VW TDI forums report significantly better than EPA mileage on the highway. The fuelly data bears this out.

I still think I'm going CRD even if it doesn't make financial sense. V-8 performance and towing while achieving better than a typical V-6 ... Using less oil/gas in general is a good thing in my mind ... It also seems as though modern diesels are cleaner and pollute less than today's gas engines. Around here diesel is $0.65 more than the cheapest gas ... Which seems like a lot more but the cheapest gas here has ethanol in it so that drops the efficiency more ... Personally I buy gas without ethanol for $0.10-0.15 more because it costs less overall when I factor in the lower fuel efficiency of gas with ethanol.

I still plan on going with the CRD ... I still have my hesitations due to hearing horror stories of the past that are probably overblown, but I'm trying to use my more logical brain :) my dad and brother always said "everyone needs to own a diesel at least once before learning better."

For diesel drivers ... Does it take longer to get warm in the winter for the heater to operate optimally?

No, they have additional heaters so there is no real difference.

I think it is fair to say that diesel engines are more complex than normal pertrol engines (turbo, cooling, injections, etc). Although I never had even a minor issue with my diesels (Mercedes and Alfa). I think there is simply more potential for expensive repairs, if you plan to keep the car for a long time this may be worth considering.

Going on my past experience with diesels (F250 with 7.3 and my current 2003 Jetta TDI) and my knowledge of the current VW TDI line up and other brands of diesels, the interval for the oil change should be longer than the petrol version of the engine. The major difference is the quality of the oil (synthetic) and quantity of the oil (more).

Diesels typically require the same (or less) maintenance as a petrol engine. They are just less forgiving if you don't do it.

And the DEF (AdBlue) cost should be a few pennies per mile at most so it's more of an annoyance than a cost worry. I can buy a jug of the stuff at the local parts store for $7.50 a gallon. On the passat, that lasts 15k miles. I suspect that would go down to 10k for the larger engine but that's speculation on my part.

Well I know for sure I'm getting a 2014 JGC, but I'm really torn between Bright White and Deep Cherry Red. I literally spent nearly an hour at the dealership comparing the red, white, and blue WK2s. (I figure an hour now is better than years of not digging my choice as much as the other one I could've went with.)

At first glance, I like the DCR best. I think it looks really classy on the WK2. I've seen spy shots of the Limited+ grille on the DCR and it looks good on it, and I'm sure it'd look good with the new Laredo grille too. On the other hand: maybe I'm totally off about this but while red is much less common than white, it's more noticeable than white, and so I think one is more prone to say "gee, another red car" than they are "gee, another white car". Almost like how thick hipster glasses are neat at first, but then more people start wearing them... and while they're still way less common than not thick glasses, people are more prone to tire of them faster because they're flashier than the not thick glasses. On the other other hand, why care about what other people think. The question is will I think this way when looking at it after owning it for a bit.

But anyway, I also really like the white. It's a sharp color, and it'll do a much better job of hiding dirt, scratches, and swirls. This will play a role in my decision, I'll just have to estimate how much I'll care about dirt, scratch, and swirl visibility and how much a role it should play in my decision...

In addition, there's not as much risk of the white fading (apparently red paint in general is more prone to fading compared to the other colors -- who knows if the DCR is vulnerable, or if modern paint largely resolved that problem). BUT, the jury is still out as to how good it'll look with the new grilles. Hopefully we'll see pictures of all the colors before the banks open. I'd consider swapping it with a black Limited grille if the stock Laredo grille didn't tickle my fancy. The other thing is, while on the one hand I think the white looks really sharp, on the other I almost wonder is if the white lacks "soul" and is too safe and clinical.

When I compared the two colors today, while I really liked both, I had to try a little more to like the white than I did the red. That doesn't mean I won't end up going with the white though.

As far as True Blue goes: the more I look at it the more I think it doesn't really do it for me as much as the red or the white does.

It's a tough decision for sure.

That's it. Too bad the LED ring is photoshopped.

#6,077 ·
I'd be interested in putting tow hooks, skid plates and rock bars on a Summit. Will this be possible or will I need to go with an Overland?

From the nav/radio owners manual PDF that was recently posted,.

"Read this information carefully before starting to operate the navigation system and follow the instructions in this manual. Neither the Chrysler Group LLC nor Garmin shall be liable for problems or accidents resulting from failure to observe the instructions in this manual"

If that's the right manual, I guess Garmin is very much involved.

#6,162 ·
Not sure. Got the following info from Garmin:
Chrysler has several different Media Centers they can install in their vehicles. We provide the navigation in the Chrysler Media Center 430N RHB and the Chrysler Media Center 8.4N/RB5. .... There are other media centers with different companies providing navigation. You would have to contact Chrysler for any information on the other media centers and to find out who provides the navigation.
In a recent Chrysler news release I found the following comment:
HARMAN engineers worked with Chrysler teams to design the latest Uconnect 8.4A and 8.4AN systems, premiering on several 2013 Chrysler vehicles. .... Uconnect 8.4A and 8.4AN are on the market now in the 2013 Ram 1500 and will be available soon in the 2013 SRT Viper.
Therefore, based on Garmin's comment (8.4N/RB5) and the press release (8.4AN) and if the Ram 1500 system is what we may see in the 2014 GC, indeed Garmin may not be the navigation provider. :(

Well, hope whatever is in the box is better or at least as good as Garmin. I know Garmin but have never heard of or used a Harman navigation, at least not knowingly.

I really wanted to check it out too....oh well, maybe it will be on youtube....:)
I guess i could play it on my phone, but then I'll probably get into an accident....lol!

The oil change interval of the european version is 20'000 km or one year (that one you get first).

One question of a member was about the heating system of the Diesel. It got in fact a suplementary heating. So often (not Volkswagen, their heating system is not good working) got it the much better heating than cars with gas engine.
Actually I got a Citroën with 3 liter Diesel - the heating is fantastic... after e view seconds it already starts.

My woman's Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV with gas engine diesn't start earlier and also not with this power.

It's 2 weeks ago, that I made a testdrive with the GC Diesel - surprise, surprise - the heating is fabulous too!

#6,088 ·
I would be extremely happy if the GC diesel comes with a heating system that actually gets warm right away.. glad to hear the VW is not "normal" in that regard.

Jeepers,

Since the turn of the century I've had 4 new cars, 3 white and one red. This one is going to be red. You can't go wrong with either IMHO.

But, get what you you like. Don't be concerned with what other people will think when they see it, unless it's your better half. :)

We have both black and white SUVs, Black '97 JGC & White '07 ML350, but i just confirmed we're moving to Florida for 3 years.... Enjoyed both, but really looked at black for the '14.

I know mythbusters looked at the "which gets hotter, a black or white car," but in my unscientific tests, every time I've been to Florida, my rental in the sun has always been real hot inside, regardless of the color, so I'm trying not to let that impact color choice for a Jeep we'll own for more than 3 years.

Anyone have any experience with the remote start making up for it? Never had that feature...

However, will still be getting the all weather /cold weather group.... Florida's only 3 years :)
