The 8-spd is a $500 option on the Tradesman, n/a on the Express.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Is the 8 speed going to start off from a stop in 2nd gear instead of 1st?

Good news. The 3.0L CRD with 265/60/18 tires will be running about 1528 rpm in 8th gear at 60 mph!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Depends on the tire diameter. With a 30.5"tire (681 revs per mile) I would make that more like 60 @ 1580 rpm in 8th locked. Easy for the diesel but not sure about the load on the Pentastar. If the drag is enough to get you into PE on every overpass, MPG will drop.

Looking at the gears, I predicted a 2nd gear start like the old Cruise-O-Matic some time ago. Suspect on the level, the Pentastar probably and the Diesel for sure would have trouble winding fast enough for a 4.31 1st x 3.45 x est 2x1 multiplication. Handy for starting a rig on a grade though.

My old Sunbird V8 had a 3.31 first, 3.08 gears and 22" tires. Was faster to start in second.

ps My error, the Pentastar/TorqueFlyte (that's a name from the past) is a $1000 option for the Tradesman but the MPG is lower than the HFE.

Maybe someone who knows is allowed to chime in ?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

My Touareg TDI with the Asin 8 speed starts in first. It shifts to second right out of the gate, very smooth.

with 30.5 tires and a 3.45 diff and a .67 8th gear the rpm at 60 mph is about 1527 rpm. The actual ratio for the zf 8 speed is .667 making the rpm at 60 more like 1521 but who's counting.

The thing that surprises me is the 3.09 ratio for the hemi.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

At 3.09, does that mean the hemi will turn slower than the pentastar at 60mph? 1360 rpm? Is my math good?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I believe that is $500 each on the Tradesman. "The total price of this vehicle will increase by $1,000". There are some other things included such as a transmission oil cooler.

Also re revs I suspect that MPH calculator does not include the reduced radius, axle-ground, caused by the weight of the vehicle on the tire. You really need to use the Revs per Mile spec (TireRack has them) and not just the diameter.

3.09 would have the Hemi turning about 1400 rpm at 60 in 8th assuming it would shift into 8th at 60. My Reattae run smoothly at 45 mph/1250 rpm in top lockup but they lack VVT. Wonder if it will still have MDS at that low a speed.

ps if you know the revs per mile (245x60x18 is 682-684, all of the durrent tires are about the same diameter), at 60 mpg just multiply the revs per mile times the gear ratio (.667) times the axle ratio (3.45 or 3.09). Result will be the RPM. No need for 1/2 the loaded wheel diameter & fudge factors

Thanks Padgett, I'll remember that formula.

The "$500" package includes the 8-speed with rotary shifter and Active Grille Shutters. The trans cooler is part of the 3.6L engine package. Maybe there is a quirk in the system or something that is increasing it by $1,000 instead of $500 (or an error in the order guides).

That's a sweet deal!
