Oh, I see. Since MY14 will be 18 months....

I have to say that I'm (positively) shocked. I was already focused on the V8 HEMI for my MY15 WK2 - but hey, if there will be something as powerful but more efficient, I'll take it!

Of course, only if my assumption is right and the introduction of (a) turbocharged engine(s) is primarily aimed at the V8. After all, that engine has the lowest MPG-rating and has been out for a while. The Pentastar is still quite new.

What model and year is this "5sp auto" your mechanic is referencing?

If you are talking WK... he's out of his mind. For example, there's turbine speed sensors (input and output) that send info directly to the computer. If the computer doesn't like what it sees (mismatch), it can hobble your rig and tell you to gimp to the mechanic to get the thing checked out (or more likely, your crappy sensors replaced).

Electronic tranny's (like injection systems and braking systems) have been around a long time now and all are managed and run by the computer.

Now granted, the newer cars have systems that talk to each other "Better" and have a more corrdinated effort (mainly around traction control, accident forecasting/avoidance, improved power, and improved fuel economy) but the idea of the computer telling you to "Bugger off, it knows better than you do" has been around a great while.

That's how you get double chutch automatics that can change gears in 60ms (Ferrari 599)... you can't even blink that fast.

So yes, while it can be annoying (usually trying to tell the system to upshift early), you generally have a good amount of control around downshifting (which is usually what comes in the most important when rock climbing).

That all said... note that even the J8 has an auto in it (not the 8 speed, but the 5 speed).

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Hopefully the new tranny will give Jeep drivers the same control Acura does. When using the paddle shifters in "S" mode the owner's manual states;

"When you accelerate from a stop, the
transmission starts in first gear, and
shifts from first to second
automatically. You must manually
upshift between second and sixth
gears. Make sure you upshift before
the engine speed reaches the
tachometer's red zone
."

The W5A580 and 65RFE are both mechanically shifted as far as direction and park, but electronically shifted from 1-5 and 1-6 respectively.

The 845RE is fully electronic!
