Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I'm wondering if anyone can say specifically which parts of the WK2 are sourced from Mercedes/Germany. I'm concerned about potential repair costs as I consider purchase of a 2014 GC Diesel or perhaps a future Wrangler (which currently has the Mercedes sourced NSG370 6-speed manual transmission that I hear a lot of problems about) or something else.

Also curious if anyone knows whether the next generation Grand Cherokee will be built with any Mercedes/Daimler parts or if the next one will be all new and contain no leftovers from Mercedes Benz.

I guess the question applies to the upcoming Grand Wagoneer which I have heard will be based on the current platform much like the Durango is.

Thanks for any replies, from a guy who has a 15 year old cherokee (xj) with a 5-speed and 240,000 miles!

If your asking about the Grand Wagoneer, there is a forum section for that model...Try your luck there.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Here's something on the 8spd transmission.

Chrysler Group LLC will initially receive the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions from the ZF Getriebe GmbH plant in Saarbrücken, Germany. By 2013, in parallel with Chrysler Group, ZF is setting up a new transmission production plant in North America, where the 8-speed transmissions will be produced.[6] ZF Friedrichshafen and Chrysler Group have reached a supply and license agreement for ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler Group is licensed to produce the 8HP at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plant and the Kokomo Casting plant, starting in 2013.

You're covering a lot here.. To sum up what you're asking, NO future launches will share anything from the Germans. The WK2/WD were the last of the vehicles DESIGNED under Diamler, using Diamler derived underpinnings, even tho they were PRODUCED well after they'd parted ways.

And the Grand Wagoneer was pushed back a bit. I was actually told the other day that the Maserati deal is next priority right now, and there won't be any GW until '15. Now idk if the person who told me this meant MY15, or CY15. But don't look for one at least until the Maserati is in full production. Which means it probably WON'T share any of the WDs structure. Doesn't make sense to launch a vehicle on an old platform that close to total redesign of the WK. Which is probably the hold up. (Development of the new platform.) So the Durango gets a shot in the arm this summer with a refresh, and MAY get one more model year. Then look for the Wagoneer to go into production. You may see a concept as early as January tho, at NAIAS.

So to be safe, I'd say at the latest, everything from MY16 on will be 100% ChryFi. Lol..

So a Jeep is a Mercedes as much as a Lada is a FIAT ?
