I don't go off roading for the sake of off roading. But I will spend a lot of time on ocean beaches and in wooded areas for fishing and nature photography. Since it is also my daily driver I want it to be comfortable as well.

I keep my vehicles washed and waxed, but that doesn't keep me from getting them dirty, inside and out. It all cleans up. This Jeep has to look good, but not at the expense utility. The "U" in SUV is important and the biggest thing missing in my MDX. That's why I'm selling it with 8,000 miles on it. I didn't realize how much I would miss getting off the pavement.

I expect to take my truck "off road" very infrequently. However, climbing fire roads, fording shallow streams, and handling very rough, snow and ice covered at times, washed out dirt and farm roads is certainly going to be happening. I've been waffling back and forth between a loaded Limited and the Overland as I definitely want my every day ride comfy and luxurious but I also don't want to baby it. I am less likely to baby a Limited than I am an Overland... plus I can make up some of that absurd premium on that diesel by dropping to a Limited.

If I wanted a "true" off roader then I would NOT be buying a Grand Cherokee... a Wrangler would be more in the picture.

Man...the interiors of these show vehicles take a beating!

look at the abrasion marks on the lower dash and the door panels of the Indigo interior...like people are kicking it on purpose.

I mean...this happens to all interior plastic, but mine only look like that after 4 winter months!

As washed out as the indigo pictures are...made me feel good about how it'll look. Looks pretty blue in the pictures, but the brown looks tan under the fluorescent lights...so the blue should be more toned down in person.

Thanks for posting....more pictures always welcome!

yeah...at detroit it was bad. The press was beating those things to death...inside and out. Camera bags, equipment, shoes etc. It was almost comical watching some of those guys....

actually disrespectful... press gets special days... they need to be more appreciative to what gives them their story. also its a shame that the public in itself is not more careful with these machines. I know its a show but its also not a "lets see how many dings we can get this time" contest either.

#10,147 ·
Great pictures. Sucks how bad these things get beat up at the shows. I can already see people looking for something to raise a fit about point out poor build quality when they see all the dings and scratches.

40 years ago I used to run with a crowd of guys with CJs who would do ungodly things off road that caused a lot of damage and needed a lot of winching to make it home. I must admit it was a great adrenaline rush. I suppose there's a lot of that going on today with much better equipment. I wonder if the Jeep brand would be anywhere near as successful today if all of their vehicles catered to that group. I applaud those of you who keep up that tradition, but I also applaud Jeep for manufacturing vehicles for the more mundane of us who just like the safety, ruggedness, and all around driveability of a vehicle like the GC Overland or Summit. Please don't begrudge us that pleasure. Maybe a good concession would be a "Trail Rated" version tricked out like the old CJ rock crawlers and gully climbers. But, I think in the final analysis, those of you who practice the extreme off roading enjoy building your buggies just as much as you enjoy driving them. Lets all "Live Long and Prosper"!

^ Very well said. Here's a very interesting interview with Mike Manley discussing the Summit diesel, SRT, Grand Wagoneer, and Wrangler. At the end of the day it really is about something for everyone and still maintaining the Jeep heritage that we all love.

Good interview! Onscreen graphic said that was Gary Gastelu interviewing Manley - I say it was John-Boy Walton doing the interviewing.

Yeah I noticed that with the reveal last month. I couldn't believe they dropped the saddle in the GC and gave it to the Compass. The compass shouldn't have the better interior color choice than the GC!

My thought about the off-road thing is that there may be the consideration that folks who are really focused there are more than willing to take a base vehicle and make it their own with their own hands. And folks who are skewed more toward "general purpose" and higher trim levels are willing to just buy some off-road accommodations from the factory to be able to do more moderate off-pavement activities. Different market. But it certainly would be nice if the former group could at least order some additional things a la carté if they wanted to...

#10,174 ·
Yea, opening up the whole catalog to the base vehicle wouldn't be prudent from a production cost standpoint, but perhaps picking a few things that truly would be of interest to the "off road" group might make some sense. (I'm not one of those folks, but certainly can appreciate their interests)

Scooter.. Thank you.

Jim, I'm picking up what you're laying down.. And I agree. Those who want a lil bit of this, and a lil bit of that, should have that option. Furthermore, not everyone wants to mod their cars. That's WHY some ppl pay out the ass for them. I get all that. Again, I'm not saying they shouldnt have these upper trim models, I'm just saying don't forget about your base.

I don't get why it is that "premium" consumers get all the love, when they certainly aren't the primary consumers. Kinda like how congress represents us, but never seems to share the majority's views.

Like I said before, I'll take 100k Laredo sales over 10k SRT sales any day. It's nice to upsell when you can, but they shouldn't make lower trims less capable to essentially force an upsell. If someone wants a higher trim than a Laredo, let it be because of the interior gadgetry and refinement and exterior styling, but not because its any less "Jeep." That's ridiculous to me.

Lastly, in regard to these upper trims, why not go all out on the gadgetry and styling, if your desire is to please those who want a ready made multipurpose car!?? Again, if its $50k, it should've been $55k. That way it could have all the stuff everyone wants, and there wouldn't be any conversation about things lacking, or being underwhelming. Hell what's another $5k to someone who can afford a $50k gas chugging SUV anyway. If they want it, and are willing to pay for it, then just build it baby! Sure enough, you have to save something for tomorrow's launch, but don't be behind the curve on what's already available today!

I love my job, and I really enjoy this brand, but the fact that my moms '09 Acadia has certain things that my '13 SRT didn't is a huge problem for me.. I'm jus sayin.

It just could be that the total profit on 10k SRTs is more than that of 100k base Laredos. The lower the price of a vehicle, the lower the margin. Lee I. Once said that the Duster was the best value for the customer, because a higher percentage of the purchase price actually went into building the car than on any other vehicle.

I agree that with the Jeep name on the hood, it would be nice if every model could be ordered with what we've come to know as Jeep capability. But, if you want to stay in business you have to sell to the mass market, not your loyal enthusiasts.

When GM sold a lot of full size Blazers, the CEO was asked why they had to build them all to be off road ready since most would never go off pavement. His answer was that as long as one customer was going to take it off road, they all had to be built to that standard. Wow, that really excited the 2 of us that took ours off road.

Although my new Jeep won't be exactly what I want, hopefully the compromises they make are the ones that will keep them in business and building Jeeps in Detroit.

I agree.. However, I know the profit on both trims.. And the margin of the SRT doesnt come close to the net profit due to volume sales of the lower trims. There's no way this plant could survive if all we built was high end models. The base models always have kept the lights on.

And as far as Mr. Iacocca goes, I couldn't agree more.. Which is essentially the point I'm trying to make now.

Chevy, I think this phenomenon is pretty much industry-wide...base level vehicles are hard to "add to" from the factory. And think about it..."Limited" used to be top of the line with various vehicles. Now there are additional levels and "limited" is less, um...limited. :p

#10,183 ·
I was just thinking about that, Jeep now has a base Limited, and a base Overland. I was just looking at pricing comparison for 2014 vs 2011-2012. The limited now starts at the previous "Laredo X" price but you do get a little more exterior styling, as for the interior unless you add and add and add options to the Limited you just now have a Laredo with some leather an extra piece of chrome here and there a back up camera and some sensors. It looks good from a Marketing standpoint but all auto makers have truly started to define the Limited trim as the true meaning of the word limited.

Ok.. I'll look for it in the morning. I've got some running around to do ASAP when I get off.

I still have your vin in my inbox, but what were the specs again?.. I know it's blue, right?

I don't off road my WJ much but I do need it's off road capabilities regularly to get to my cabin in the woods. I remember my dealer not understanding my insistence of the somewhat rare off road package at the time. I simply was not going to buy it without skid plates and tow hooks. It actually used to drag the plates on my access road until I raised it a couple of inches with budget boost lift spacers. Now if I could just get ELSD without air suspension, and with flipper glass, a CD in the dash, and more "color" choices (I don't consider most of the available paints colors) I would be thrilled to order one. I have been shopping for a couple years and almost ordered a loaded red Limited last year but decide to wait for the '14s. Right now not too happy I waited but I guess I'll get over it once I get something.

So I went to a local Jeep dealer today to ask about ordering a 2014 Summit. The dealer said they would not have any 2014s until maybe June. He knew nothing about them and I could tell I was educating him on them when talking to him about some of the basic new features. When I asked about ordering he seemed completely disinterested and said come back in June. Hmmm anyone else run into this? Needless to say I left and will probably drive a few extra miles to another dealer.

For those that have ordered when are your estimated arrival dates? Thanks!<O:p</O:p

Yep - I ordered mine from out of state due to the absolute resistance I faced from all local dealers in just trying to negotiate with them. If you become at least a Level III Premium Member you'll have access to the tracking thread which will show you the estimated delivery date of every vehicle ordered by members of the forum (who also signed up for premium membership).
