Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Any chance of a new wheel design for the 20's? I'm anxious to see the sticker prices on the 14.

Too funny... Chevyboy has heard nothing of the sort. But if I did, I would've triple checked something like this before posting, bc that'll kill half the orders in this thread. You'd really be buying that Kia!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I'm sure the 8 speed is still set in stone but it's probably a change to a different model number or something like that b/c it's made here and not Germany.

Maybe they will make it an option on lower trims and standard on upper but I would imagine something like that would be supply driven (not having enough of them right now).

If 8-speed is out completely than next week would be driving brand new 2013 Overland. Not a big fan of the new styling and upgraded UCONNECT alone isn't worth it for me.

WHEN WILL WE SEE the new MPG numbers? Would that be before Detroit Auto Show?

More than just a model number change. According to allpar, it has different internals, upgraded clutches etc. Scott really stirred the pot with this one. He never said all 8 speeds were going away, just the HP8.

Reliable source oh2o wrote that Chrysler will be switching over from the ZF 8HP45, the transmission currently used in the Charger V6 and 300/300C V6, to the new 845RE early next month. “This is what caused the recent ‘Hemi to get 8-speed in February’ reports/rumors.” Sources may have incorrectly assumed that the “new” transmission was for the Hemi cars.

The 845RE name indicates that the transmission has 8 speeds, a moderately high torque rating (4), rear wheel drive intent, and fully electronic controls; the “5” indicates the fifth revision of the transmission. It can, and will, be used with both 4×4 (in Rams and Jeeps) and AWD setups.

Known differences between the 8HP45 and 845RE include, according to oh2o, the 845RE’s clutches (which have extra friction plates for better performance) and, for some vehicles, a higher capacity oil pan. oh2o wrote that many internal parts do not interchange between the 845RE and 8HP45. The 845RE is to be built by Chrysler itself, in the Kokomo plant which also made the 65RFE and 545RFE.

According to reliable source oh2o, large cars with Hemi engines and eight-speed automatics won’t been seen until summer at the earliest. This does not necessarily mean they will not be open for ordering before then, but actual manufacturing will not start for months after February. The Charger and 300C would likely get the combination, while Challenger would wait until its impending redesign. All would be sold as 2014 models (technically, a car made today could be labelled as a 2014).
The eight-speed automatic is expected to increase acceleration (though not as dramatically as with the V6 cars) and to substantially boost highway gas mileage; city mileage might or might not rise as well. The eight-speed has a much higher range (gap between lowest and highest gears), allowing it to provide a lower first gear while also running the engine at slower speeds on the highway, lower frictional losses, and much faster shifting and torque converter locking than the current Mercedes five-speed automatic. It is currently only used with the Pentastar V6 at Chrysler, but Rams, Grand Cherokees, and Durangos with Hemi eight-speed combinations are due soon. The eight-speed will be made by Chrysler under license, and the Chrysler version is different in many ways than the standard ZF package.

The big question is that tranny being used anywhere currently? Any reviews? Not sure if I want to be a guinea pig ... Knowing life there will be numerous issues with first batch from programming issues to reliability/quality issues.

They only talk about HEMI. What about V6 and diesel?

Well if it is true, wouldn't you guys in the market for a MY14 with a hemi rather have them get it perfected then release it half-assed? I'm still confused though..
