In the Prices Paid master thread, I've seen a lot of WK2s go for a couple thousand below (which ends up being a good deal below 1% under invoice) what Edmunds reports as being the invoice price for the same vehicle. I also see a lot of WK2s listed on cars.com for a couple thousand below what Edmunds reports as being the invoice price.

How does this work? Is it one of those things where you have to finance with the dealer and be eligible for all of the bonus cash and rebates that are available (and it ends up turning out that most people don't qualify), and it has to be at the "right time" when Chrysler is offering the dealer some a kickback if they sell X vehicles in a month, or...?

If a dealer is close to hitting their quota then they might sell for a lot less knowing they might lose $1000-$2000 on that one deal but will gain thousands by hitting that quota. And yes usually if a dealer is giving a killer deal on the front end he's making it back on the back end.

Here's my opinion and since it doesn't have to do with head lights I probably won't strike a nerve with anyone. Chances are the new GC will count toward the dealers quota but it won't pay any extra money. So if you can go in and not have to negotiate from MSRP and can let the dealer keep all of his holdback when honoring the 1% under invoice then it should be a win win for both. Yes the dealer gets reimbursed 2% for any of the AR programs. So basically if the dealer gives you 1% under invoice then the dealer will break out 1% above invoice. Out of that the dealer pays some hourly worker to detail it, hopefully spends the $100 to fill the gas tank and pays the salesperson a "mini comission" of $100(industry average). when all said and done dealer nets about invoice, keeps all of the holdback.

Over the past 10 years, the difference in cost from "Invoice" to "MSRP" has drastically decreased.
So, 1 of 2 things is happening here.
#1...cost of products are higher, but MFRS were making to much money, so they LOWERED their MSRP margin! (NOT LIKELY)
#2...The published "Invoice" price is being increased to increase margins for dealers who are subject to every internet site listing the "invoice" price and selling based on that.

In other words, the "invoice" price is not close to what the dealer invoice really is.
Like Pat states above

You can be sure the back end is much larger than it used to be. This protects the dealers profits going forward, until they get figured out and released. Since it's performance based, it probably will be a long time till that info gets out.
The best way to buy a car and hopefully take advantage of the "killer" deal is to time your purchase with the end of a month/quarter/year period.
If a dealer is 1 car away from getting back $100/car sold that month x 300 cars = $30,000) Don't you think he'll float you $1,000 less to make $29K?

This site explains this in detail (Fighting Chance New Car Buying Guide - Avoid haggling for a new car. Buy or lease a new car the smart way with our car buying guide. Get new car dealer invoice prices for all vehicles. Buying or leasing a car? Don't do it without this car buying and )
Sorry .

Now back to your regularly scheduled tidbits and banter.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

^^
I've used fighting chance in the past and for example one time I have had 3 different dealers out of 5 I contacted to haggle down for my business & I never had to step onto their lot.

It was near the end of the month and I wanted to buy it mid-week after their long weekend so that I would probably be the only sale they had at that time. They were desperate!

By all means dealers should make money, salespeople if they do a good job with their knowledge base and service is good should make money. However, we as consumers need to educate ourselves because the truth isn't always told to us and that's makes it seem like shady business practices.

fighting chance is one of the very good informational resources and I think it costs around $25.

I'll try again! Does anybody have any information on the Quadralift? Any changes? I assume optional on the limited and standard on overlad etc?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Here's the deal on invoice and "kickbacks". Invoice less holdback is what a dealer pays for a new vehicle. The only other way a dealer makes money on the front end of the purchase is by hitting their quota. By hitting their quota, a dealer can get back $600 to $750 per new vehicle sale. This is a monthly quota and a quarterly quota. So if a dealer misses their quota one month but makes it up another month within that quarter they will still get paid for all 3 months. The reason there is a spread between the $600 and $750 is due to Chryslers fast start programs. Every month, usually by the 20th of the month the dealer can get UP TO $150 per new vehicle if they sell enough new vehicles. So if the dealers quota is 50 by the 20th then the dealer will get paid UP TO $150 per vehicle. If they miss the fast start program but still hit the monthly quota the dealer is paid $600 per vehicle. If they hit the fast start program and the monthly quota then they will get $750 for every new vehicle sold that month.

The other way a dealer gets reimbursed is with advertising funds. I really don't know the exact amount but it is based on the quotas. The number that keeps coming up in the dark corners of my brain is $125 or $175 per vehicle. Now it does have to be used for advertising. Just an example but our new vehicle internet ad bill runs close to $12000 per month, that does not include print, mailers, radio or forums for that matter. Sometimes Chrysler will co op advertising, if we are holding an event and we are advertising it Chrysler will pickup $3000-$5000 of the bill. We had a 2011 Grand Cherokee Launch party here and we spent about $35000 on it.

That's the real deal and how it works. With the money we get back, we pay for loaner cars, free car washes, a pretty nice facility, charity events and obviously some of it pays the other bills. Overhead for a dealer is pretty extreme most of the time.

All Tread Lightly does is enroll you in Affiliate Rewards, it is the same discount. Tread Lightly in a non profit organization and for those of you that need to find a way to get AR should use TL. It's $100 for a 3 year membership but it allows you more than 1 new CJDR purchase, plus you can get discounts on other things as well.

Do you think it's shady for Samsung or LG to give money back to electronics stores for selling X amount of their products? Just wondering, I know a vehicle is the 2nd most expensive purchase, but just wondering if the principle is the same. If you aren't told that would be shady right? I'm not pointing you out but I have heard this argument by a lot of folks here and elsewhere so I figured someday I'll understand why one is different from the other when the only difference is the amount of money.

Ok, good to know - I'm already a Tread Lightly member (and encourage anyone who isn't to join up), just didn't realize that all companies had the same Affiliate discount. Thanks again for the information!

Pat, couple questions for you, if you don't mind. Can you ship to Canada and offer the full canadian warranty and what not? If you can't are you affliated with any Canadian dealers that offer the same pricing you do? Last question, do you have a PDF showing which Canadian companies qualify for discounts. Thanks.

Pat,

I don't suppose working for the National Nuclear Security Administration in the Department of Energy qualifies me for anything?

I can't ship to Canada, it's considered export and all warranties are voided. Unfortunately I can't get the list of companies for Canada either. I don't have any real contacts at other dealerships. Sorry for not being able to answer yes to any of your questions.
