Exclamation Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

28 mpg highway for CRD 4WD is good, but with all the hype and imperial number on current CRD I was really thinking 30MPG or a tad higher.
I can't believe there are 20 pages about the rear glass and I'm the only one bummed about below 30MPG on the 4WD CRD

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Well, keep in mind, those are EPA numbers.

It will all come down to how you drive.

If their highway numbers were based using alot of slowing and speeding back up on a highway, where as you set Cruise at 60MPH and let it go for 300 miles, your MPG will be a great deal higher then theirs.

We know for a fact that with the 5 Speed it was doing 23/32 according to the EU.

Honestly, having driven (and still driving a diesel) I often beat the EPA estimates by a good 10-15%.. and that's in the crapfest driving that is Seattle traffic.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I'm waiting to see new 2014 Grand Cherokee because I'm thinking to change my Land Rover LR3 with it, but I like a lot the current design, and I hope that will not be ruined.
Obviously I am waiting new model because 8 speed gearbox will be really better than the current 5 speed.
This is my LR3 with 285/55R18 tyres:

Agreed - our TDI Sportwagen usually gets 38-39mpg in mixed driving (also around Seattle), and on long highway hauls it's easily in the mid 40s, unless you're really stomping on it. It handily exceeds the EPA 30/42 that was on the window sticker, and I would expect (but not assume) the 3.0L highway mpgs will be up in the low 30s even on the 4x4.

Initial fuel economy on the CRD may improve during the break-in period, as well. I remember before buying the TDI I read that it can take up to 50k miles for a modern diesel engine to reach its peak compression (though the majority of the break-in occurs in the first 10k miles).

I'm leaning more and more toward the Hemi. Maybe I'll catch the diesel train on my next go-round. I find it helpful to remember that this isn't the last car I'll ever buy
I just crunched the numbers as well.... assuming 17 combined mpg for the HEMI and 24 for the CRD, and assuming 15,000 miles driven per year, it calculated out to:

$468 more per year for HEMI vs. CRD

Alot of people are saying 2k-3k additional cost for the CRD over the HEMI, so assuming that, it will take approx 65k-95k miles to break even.

Although I have a hunch the cost of HEMI vs. CRD might be the same.... MILOUS?

Personally, I was pretty set on getting the CRD, but after reviewing things some more, I'm not so sure... if you add in the additional diesel costs, the yearly difference is going to be quite minimal, and realistically it will probably take well over 100k miles to break even... probably closer to 150k. Chances are I will have upgraded by then anyways.

I think some others leaning CRD might start to reconsider as well, especially considering the longer wait to obtain a CRD.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

In Australia the Hemi and CRD cost the same.
As for fuel economy we usually get 8l/100km on the highway and 11l/100km in the city.
You can work that out in USA mileage, but I think it is around 34mi/g

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

owners in Australia are seeing around 8 L/100km on highway use translates to 29.4 MPG

thats with the 5 speed, the 8 speed has two overdrives with a higher final ratio in 8th so I would expect you will see improvements on the 2014 model tipping it over 30MPG

If you missed it a few pages back, Milous reported 20/28 for the CRD (4x4)... 4x2 numbers were a bit higher and did acheive the 30 rating... obviously will be how it is marketed.

P.S. Late edit, I see it is ft lbs, which equates to 570 Nm, so an increase in torque in comparison to the current export model.
According to the PDF Gigi posted the export CRDs will get some more HP I assume that comes with additional torque as well.
