Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Contrary to what others are saying, the higher CRD price is making my decision harder!!! No brainer to get CRD if same price as HEMI, now I don't know what to do! HEMI or CRD?!?!?!?!?

If it comes down to cost, how long do you plan on keeping the vehicle? If more than just a year or two, based on your driving habits, and the current and possible future costs of gas and diesel, do some numbers factor in how long it'll take for the diesel to break even, and then how much it'll save you per year after that. Also taking into account any additional maintenance costs, etc.

Or you could just not care about any of that and just *want* the diesel.

The convenience of not having to go fill the tank as often would be enough for me.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Listen guys, it's the same flawed logic as the hybrid thing. At a $5000 premium plus the higher price of deisel fuel and the additional maintenance cost, you will never make up the difference. Never.

Get what you want. I've been a Hemi guy all my life, that's what I ordered. If you're a diesel fan or you tow a lot, go diesel and be happy.

Having said that I've had 4 people in the truck with all their gear at altitude and the Hemi never let me down. Altitude or not.

Um where did you go to school?

Diesel combined MPG will be about 25 mpg. Current diesel price $3.79

Hemi will be about 17 mpg combined current reg price $3.39

50,000 miles/25=2000 gal of diesel x $3.79=$7,500

50,000 miles/17=2941 gal of reg x 3.39=$9,970

9,970-7,500=2,470

CRD is $2,300 MSRP option over the hemi (less for invoice price)

Looks like never is at 50k miles or less. Also resale on the CRD will be much higher.

Out here diesel is slightly less than $1.00 more than regular, maybe a regional thing. Maintenance is higher, don't even attempt to go there. And if I have to drive it 60,000 to 70,000 miles just to break even, justifying it financially is ludicrous without even considering the NPV of the money you borrowed. And that's comparing it to the Hemi rather than the Pentastar. Please.

Thanks BMW.....your math and rationale seem sound but, unfortunately, the $4500 hit that serves as the price of admission will likely turn many (if not most) away, quite possibly myself included. I'm a staunch supporter of diesels and have been waiting for this vehicle (and talking it up to whomever will listen) for as long as I can remember, but this shockingly disappointing pricing feels like a sucker punch. Adding insult to injury is the thousand bucks to get the darn thing from Dee-troit to Chee-cago....wow! Decision just got much more difficult.....

Tell me about it. Destination on the Dart was $795.

That's half the cost to fuel it for 15000 miles. I could have picked it up from the plant for cheaper.

Looking at the Overland and comparing to KBB, it only went up a few hundred

FWIW, quickly looking at the car websites (so these numbers could be off) it looks like the diesel costs $3500 on the VW T-Reg, $5200 on the Audi Q7, and $4K on the Mercedes ML.
