I had my mind set on the V8 but looking at some performance numbers, I was surprised that despite the big numbers (horse power and torque) the V8 is not much faster than the V6. About a second (0-60). However the mpg is much lower. Also the explorer sport v6 ecoboost seems to be quicker with similar power as the Hemi. What do you guys think? Do you really feel the difference in a daily drive. Also anyone know how much improvement the 8-speed tranny will make on the performance of the V6 and V8??? Any insights will be much appreciated!
I test drove the Explorer Sport (only Explorer with the more powerful engine at this point) and thought it was far more responsive than the other Explorer engines and the suspension was significantly more firm -- both big improvements over the other Ford engines/trims. That said, JGC ride and power from their V8/5speed felt tighter and more immediate than the Explorer. For my needs, the cost difference didn't move us into the 7 seater Explorer with the difficult-to-learn/use-unless-you're-7 years old SYNC/MyTouch system. I hope the JGC 8 speed lives up to the performance/durability we all are expecting. Obviously will have to drive the '14 JGC to know.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Looking at ordering 2014 Overland with V6, collision avoidance. I tow a 4200 lb boat and would love to have the diesel. However the diesel $4500 PRICE is a showstopper... to the point my wife is now starting to talk about a VW Toureg?
...my last jeep was 1995 Laredo... went for 181000 miles.
Any thoughts on the VW diesel Toureg? They are doing deals.

Thanks BigWav and everyone that shared some thouhts. Good to know about your experience with the Explorer. I was considering it but the Uconnect system seems a better choice and I like GC's interior more.
I really wanted to test drive V6 and V8 with the new tranny on the GC but I will have to wait a lot. Im ready to order but I cannot make a decision on the V6 or V8. If I can be happy with V6 it would be nice to save the additional $2k for the V8. I guess I will have to be patient until GCs are available for test drive.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

The Touareg TDI lux stickers for $53k. I don't know what kind of deals they are offering but I doubt you will get it for cheaper than the grand cherokee. The Jeep also has more features such as air suspension that are not available on the VW.
I think reliability is a tossup, I would not want to own either vehicle out of warranty considering the problems with diesel vehicles have with low quality USLD fuel in the US. Now, if the lifetime warranty were available on the CRD Jeep, then I would be all in.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I have a question on how long after the dealer places the order, will it show up in the VOTS system? I placed my order last Tuesday (1/15) for a Summit and have the VON#.
THANKs to everyone for the wisdom shared on this forum.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

All of the pictures I have seen of the nav screen show the soft buttons across the bottom of the screen. If you can't get rid of them, going to an 8.4 inch screen is a scam. A bigger screen just to make room for buttons is no feature.

I've asked a couple of times if the map could be stretched to fill the screen. So far no takers.

I did some research regarding the uconnect wireless. They use sprint, looks like the service will be free for a year, and yes you do need it if you want to use the fancy smartphone remote start/unlock etc etc app, since it communicates via the web. You also need it to run search and other apps in the radio, however some sources say that limited functionality may be available by tethering to your iPhone or whatever.

When I contacted uconnect customer service in December, they told me the pricing for the basic data service after the free trial was not yet determined...

I agree...If they don't allow you to go full screen maybe someone will come out with a mod/hack to allow it like the unlock when moving on the older Navs.
