Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I wish I hadn't seen and already decided on the leather dash.

As for the exterior, I think that red Limited is the best looking of the whole bunch of '14s.

I like the wheels better than the Overland 20s, and the lights look like they belong there.

I am a sucker for technology so one of the big reason for me to get 2014 is new uconnect. My understanding is that there are really 3 things going on and that's why it is a little bit confusing:

- WIFI via Sprint. You buy daily/weekly or monthly pass and your car turns into WiFI hotspot. Not really looking to use this as I already have WIFI hotspot via my cell phone. The price for this is also on a higher side BUT I do see people using this for example if you going on vacation for a week, camping or doing stuff outdoors. Sprint's coverage is unfortunately not the best.

- Smartphone APP that enables you to communicate with your car via the Internet. It is kind similar to what competition is doing ... lock, unlock your car remotely, start engine, check maintenance ... Kind of like ONStar stuff ... look it up, the capabilities will probably be the same and price as well (my wild guess is probably around $9.99 per month?)

- THE MOST EXCITING THING IS build in support inside UCONNECT for downloadable "Apps" (for example Pandora). I think I read somewhere that actually your phone data plan is used to connect to the internet. This suppose to kind of work like iTunes store where you buy various apps and install them in your car. I believe this uses Blackberry's new OS BB8 I believe so access to apps will be limited and probably Chrysler will have its own acceptance testing, etc. Having that ability is kind of cool and as far as I know nobody really offers something like this today.

When it comes to technology and innovation this SUV is ahead of its time. VERY EXCITED!!!

AGAIN, THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED INFO BUT THIS IS HOW I UNDERSTAND THIS AS OF TODAY. I'm very excited to actually see this!!!

^ X2 on the lights. It just dawned on me that you need to get the Lux Group on the Limited to get the LED DRLs. It's like one cancels out the other with style and design.

Same here... But $10 a month for the basic connectivity to run the smart phone app (remote start, etc) is highway robbery.

Actually it might be more than $10 - looking at this:
https://www.onstar.com/web/portal/planspricing

Capabilities should be very similar though ...

Due to the fact that so much is new, I'd say maybe a week or two.. I'll have a better answer for you tomorrow, when we start on time and run the whole day. So far we've built like 7. In over an hour! They have a bunch of "launch team" ppl here and engineers walking around, verifying engineer stuff (?) getting in the way. So I'll probably read the paper at least two more times before the end of the shift.

And to clarify, that 600 number is a combination of WKs and WDs.. Of the 600-650 we build/assemble a shift, the average is abt 75% WK. (Poor Durango )

As it pertains to quality, this "phase" is more for making sure the suppliers are sending good new product, and that things aren't gonna come back and bite you in the arse in recalls and warranty work, etc.. Also for ensuring jobs that have been altered from an outgoing model, are being done properly.. But more so the parts.

Think of it like this; if you gave someone 90 days to bake you 200 cakes, they may just say, "piece of cake" and deliver you some top notch product. This is what typically happens during "pilot" phase.. The manufacturers commission vendors to build something new, and they have not much stress in building it. Then things get revised over and over, yet the supplier has no issue getting the manufacturer whatever adjusted/amended parts they want. But then the manufacturer comes back and says, "ok, now I need 2000 cakes a day" i.e. parts, and quality doesn't always stay the same. So until things get going smoothly, they like to keep the cars close, just in case they notice a defect in some of the pilots on the road that are still being tested, and/or the parts that are now being shipped in daily. It's more checks-and-balances/cya than anything.. If you ask me, it's well worth the wait!

It's also for build up.. You know how you read in the paper and they'll say "Chrysler has a 60 day supply of Grand Cherokees.." Well this is how we get that supply.. It's a buffer. You need a buffer. You wanna fill orders, but you have to keep yourself a "just in case" stockpile.. 60 days is good. 100-120 day supply is excessive, and shows poor sales.

Anything else!?
Thanks for the detailed response chevy!

I actually do have another question, which you may or may not know the answer to and if not, no big deal, but do you have any idea if the first 3 weeks of production is still for pre-spec and drive-off models (neither of which I assume would include customer sold orders)? I'm also curious to know if the plan is still to keep everything in containment until the 3rd week of February, or more towards early March -- both dates were thrown out over the past couple weeks and I'm hoping the 3rd week of February date is the more accurate one.
