If you own a computer, then you shouldn't need a CD player in your car. The player not only takes up valuable space, but you'll still need to fumble around with your CDs and bring them all with you. An SD card will be more than enough. Physical media is dead, you don't have to be a techno junkie to see that.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

What's a CD?

I haven't used CD's in 5-6 years. Smartphone/mp3 player/Flash memory is all you need these days.

I disagree. CDs are dying, but they're definitely not dead. Millions of people still buy new CDs, and just as many if not more buy used CDs at the local thrift shops, yard sales, etc. When music CDs are dead you'll no longer be able to buy them in stores and you'll be hard pressed/not be able to buy them online, like with cassettes.

CDs are less convenient in a lot of regards, but they also don't require any extra steps or time if you have a CD player. Just pop it in and you're good. (Personally I think there's also something "special" about a physical CD album.)

What if right after you buy a CD you feel like listening to it in the car on the ride home/to wherever you're going? What if a friend or family member is going somewhere with you and they bring some CDs with to listen to because they assume that like everyone else you have a CD player in their car? If you don't have a CD player you're out of luck unless you want to go home, pop the CD(s) into your computer, and then do the transfers, then get back in the car at some point later on.

That's why I paid for the option.

Most people have smartphones that allow you to download on demand or carry your music library with you. If someone really wants to listen to a song they can pull it up on YouTube and play it via the connection, nearly any song is available for listening I the Internet. People buy CDs because they want to own the music and don't like iTunes, etc. the argument for a CD player is the same as for a map or phone book. The mere fact that we are debating this on an Internet chat forum is proof enough that you are technologically advanced enough to forego a CD player

Before you start on the Durangos, are you building any Grand Cherokees?

Yes, all the while building out the 2013 Durango right now. The line basically looks like this

I am technologically advanced enough for sure, but the truth is that just because it's entirely possible to get by without a CD player, doesn't mean it's always more convenient to do so, for the aforementioned reasons among others.

Technology is supposed to make life easier and more convenient, and it usually does. But while I'm not saying it's not a lot more convenient in a lot of situations, I am saying we're not at the point yet where buying and playing the digital version of music everywhere you go is more convenient for 99.9% of people in 99.9% of situations compared to buying and playing the physical CD version. Maybe in the next 5-10 years, but for now CDs and physical media do still have a place.

Also, a lot of people do have smartphones, but not everyone, I think we're at around 50-60% or so. And even if they did, finding a song, much less an entire album, on YouTube is more difficult than just popping the CD in and pressing play or next/previous song. It's also usually of lower quality.

I'll readily admit that the CD player option is overpriced though.

So that would be approx. 450 2014 WK's per shift, which would mean approx. 900 2014 WK's per day?

Isn't that 450 WK's per day?

5 x 30 lines x 3 shifts = 450

I thought there were only two shifts per day?

Either way, Marlon said to "multiply that by three for each shift", so that's how I got my number: 150x3=450.
