I wish we had snow...65 degrees and raining with high winds and torrential downpours on the way in today.

And just to help our the post count and rub it in a little, Its 75 degrees right now with an expected high of 80. We are having a cold front come in tomorrow night however. We should expect overnight temps around 54

We're at 59 right now in the middle of Delaware. Perfect for me. I can do a little woodworking with the shop doors open.

Wish I had time to be in my shop...many projects backed up. Business travel. Coming weekend is a horse show weekend, so no shop time there, either.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I love winter, alot of things to do outside. But our weather has been so up and down that it is hard to plan anything. 45 degrees yesterday then 6-10inches of snow (blizzard conditions this afternoon) today. It doesn't make for good ice conditions for fisherman or people on snowmobiles/atvs.

If you only plan keeping this Jeep for for 3 or 4 years I would go with a gas engine. With the price of diesel at 4.19 a gallon in my area regular gas is 3.49 and 3.79 for premium gas. at the 4005 up charge diesel would be a worthless option and I'd opt for the V6 or V8. I see up to 28mpg (on a perfect day) on the highway with my current V6. I'm sure members with the V6 paired with the new 8spd will report higher numbers. What the gist is, if you don't plan on keeping this Jeep for a long time a petrol engine is the way to go. or you could get it for the status quo.
We are choosing between v8 and CRD. Here 89 oct (yes I would use 89) is $3.43/gal and diesel is $3.66/gal. Assuming an average 17mpg for the Hemi (though I fully expect 15) and 27 for CRD, it would take 20k miles to make up the $1,357 gas/diesel price difference for the limited or 35k miles to make up the $2,326 gas/diesel price difference for the overland.

So, in 1.5-2 years we would be getting a return on our investment, not to mention the higher resale value on the back end. That's just the circumstances where I live (Memphis, TN). So sometimes the math works out, sometimes it doesn't, depending on fuel prices where you live.

I would say your estimates of the CRD MPG are a little ambitious. On fuelly it looks like Touareg diesel and ML diesel owners are getting right around the EPA estimates, and Hemi Jeep owners with the 5 speed are getting around 16 so 17 may be spot on with the 8 speed. I would estimate from the other info that the CRD will get 24-25 mpg...not a huge difference but it will definitely make a difference in your payoff calculations. Also, don't forget to factor in some increased maintenance. My advice would be to drive both of them and chose the one you like better...who knows where gas vs diesel prices will be in the future.
All the reports you read of diesels easily beating EPA estimates are from diesel enthusiasts who buy the cars for milage and drive accordingly; similarly you will see many prius owners saying they can easily beat EPA milages. The truth is these drivers will probably beat the EPA with any vehicle due to driving style. If you drive like the average person you will probably be right within the EPA, if you drive aggressively you will be lower with any vehicle diesel, gas or hybrid.
