I would estimate from the other info that the CRD will get 24-25 mpg...not a huge difference but it will definitely make a difference in your payoff calculations. Also, don't forget to factor in some increased maintenance. My advice would be to drive both of them and chose the one you like better...who knows where gas vs diesel prices will be in the future.
All the reports you read of diesels easily beating EPA estimates are from diesel enthusiasts who buy the cars for milage and drive accordingly; similarly you will see many prius owners saying they can easily beat EPA milages. The truth is these drivers will probably beat the EPA with any vehicle due to driving style. If you drive like the average person you will probably be right within the EPA, if you drive aggressively you will be lower with any vehicle diesel, gas or hybrid.
I'd kill to get 15, much less 17, from my Hemi. I'm averaging between 11.5 and 12.5 in day to day city driving here in Chicago. While there's typically a fair amount of stop and go, I also do some expressway driving as part of the mix. My friend with a 2012 diesel Touareg tells me he's averaging 18-20 in the city and over 30 on trips. Yes the 8 speed will be better but in my case I don't think it would help me too much. I've done the conservative math and in my case the diesel will make total sense.

The CRD makes sense to some. I was just pointing out that assuming you will get 27mpg is a little ambitious unless you are doing 100% highway. It seems people on here are propagating the notion that the diesel will easily beat epa estimates...I was just trying to point out the falsehood of that notion. Your friend with the Touareg is pretty much getting exactly the EPA milage of 20/29. If you are only getting 11.5-12.5 with the Hemi your driving style/environment might be a little different than that of your friend.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

My wife LOVES her Jetta TDI and so do I, but we need one 4x4 in the family where we live in MN. Im ready to replace my 10 year old Murano and want something that gets better mpg's, even if only a little better. Part of it for me is as others say, I just want a diesel. The fact that it gets better mileage is icing on the cake. I'm not a tree hugger, but I don't mind paying a little more knowing that the diesel emits less CO2. Lastly, I usually keep my vehicles around 10 years. So the up-charge for the diesel doesn't make much difference in the long run for me.

For those crunching all the numbers, I say just get what you want and you'll be happier in the end.

Does anyone have any opinions or experience positive or negative regarding the Advanced Technology group features for the Overland? I am placing my order this week and that is the only question I am still considering. Thanks.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

My dealer's wife has had it in her last 2 GC's. She loves it. The dealer recommended it to me, so I ordered it. I have heard others speak positively as well.

Does anybody have a picture of the new Overland / Summit, where I can see how the new 'Ambientlight' is 'shining'.

I know the details from the '13 version. But what's new in the '14? For example what about the underseat lighting.

And about the exterior... the new arealight in the mirrors... where can I find / see a picture of it?

I think it's money well spent on a 45k investment. Blind spot monitoring is the best feature in the group.

I don't think any pictures of those specifics have been released yet... might be easiest to wait until the end of February, beginning of March, and go check them out in person.

Available on all trims, Quadra-Trac II is a four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case, hill descent control and the Selec-Terrain system, which allows drivers to choose from five pre-programmed settings to best handle a given road or trail condition. Quadra-Drive II adds to this electronic limited-slip differentials for both axles." That was from 2012-13. Now, I see there is a difference between Quadra- Trac 2 and Quadra-Drive 2. Here is my question, for 2014 model year, for the Laredo E, I can get Quadra-Trac 2, by getting the ORA1 group option, but I cannot get Quadra-Drive 2 in the Laredo? Is this right? Also, what am I loosing out on in the Quadra-Drive 2, no limited slip front and rear?
You can only get QUADRA-DRIVE with a V-8; looks to me to be ident from last year.
