Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

That's why pilots are built incrementally. Take this vehicle for example; There's AT LEAST 100 MY '14 WKs out there already (maybe more, I don't count 'em) but we've been building 'em in small bunches since around the time the MY '13s launched. Each bunch better than the last. Then when launch time comes and we do a build up, whatever problems weren't corrected, they just say f'it, we tried. Lol.. (jk)

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Not all pre-production vehicles are destroyed, many are used as company cars, fast-feedback vehicles, etc. for extended periods of time. They also end up being sold to dealers who sell them as used vehicles. In tracking VIN numbers over the years I have run across quite a few pre-production models that have been purchased by consumers. Even SRT track experience vehicles end up being sold to the public.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Hmmm.. That's interesting. I remember back in tech school we had a lot of pilots donated from various manufacturers that couldn't be sold bc of a law that prohibited pre-production designated vehicles from resale and registration, regardless of condition. I always thought the demos that the big shots get to drive, and the "show" cars were built under a different designation or something, allowing for public resale with used pricing. I didn't know any pilots were allowed into the market for public purchase.

Very early pilots, such as S0's, would in most cases never make it to a retail sale. But later builds, notably V2's, have. For example, Ralph Gilles' 2005 SRT8 V2 pilot was later sold to a customer in Indiana (who still owns it to this day). Over the years there have been a number of posts on the LX forums from owners have have bought pre-production vehicles. If I dug around a bit I could come up with some examples of pre-production WK's sold at retail as well.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Speaking of pre-production vehicles, last night around 11 on my way to the bar I saw a new Viper GTS on I-94 with a manufacturer plate on it, and HAD to see who was driving it. It's sort of a habit. I never know the ppl driving the cars that catch my eye, but its a curiosity thing. Anyway I caught back up to it when it took the same exit that I was getting off on. When I pulled up next to it at the light, I SWEAR the guy driving it was Sergio Marchionni. He's been known to make unannounced visits to the plants from time to time, and after what happened yesterday I'm almost certain that he was heading to our plant. He bought a house abt an hour outside of Detroit last year, but I never thought he actually lived in it! Nor did I think he ever got a chance to drive by himself. Lol.. We did a special SRT8 for him a lil over a year ago, and I thought it was just something to add to his collection. Good to see he truly supports the brand and the ONLY vehicles still made exclusively in Detroit.

I dont think that this is an Overland. This looks more like an s limited. But the mirrors on the European models have always been in body color.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

It's an Overland Summit.

With that said, an S2 pilot is technically a production vehicle, that is why it was evenutally sold. The pilots we're making right now will in fact be scrapped. These aren't gonna be 100% perfect or configured properly, so trim may differ slightly from production versions.

Pilots have their uses, like JD Power, magazine/website tests, emissions certifications for different governments, crash testing, etc. So no, like chevyboy said, they are not wastes of money.

That is cool. I really believe that the chrysler brands are extremly important to him (commetcially), but i also believe that he does also like the brands and products personally as chrysler products always had character like the fiat products.
