Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

What are the advantages of having Navigation with the RA4 as opposed to just getting the RA3 without navigation, and having one of my various portable electronic devices tell me how to get to my destination? Cell phones have great navigation software, and are much more readily updated. Just trying to figure out if it's really needed to reside on the vehicle.

If your getting a package that has the RA3 in it, the upcharge to the RA4 is worth it. It's less than having the dealer activate the lesser nav on the RA3 if you change your mind later, plus no worry of getting you portable unit nicked in the parking lot if you forget to hide it. You will also get the value back out on resale.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

Aye, I've seen the differences between RA3 and RA4, I just don't get why resident navigation in the vehicle is necessary. I guess if you don't have a smartphone you would need it. Maybe it's just because I've never used it. I'll probably get the RA4 anyway, for the HD radio and more flash memory, but was just curious about why I would prefer navigation from the radio rather than Siri. I find her voice comforting.

Mostly the convenience of it always being there. I put my tablet on the front seat one time and it pretty much matched the performance of my built in unit. But for the price I'd rather have the integrated unit. You will probably get most of what you spend when you trade. But you will never recover what you pay for updates. In this case Jeep gave us good options, but only you can decide what is best for you.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I wonder if there is going to be an option to do the lifetime updates on the RA4 for the maps or what the price would be to do the updates.

Last time I checked it was pretty spendy to update. I'm going to say $299 or something like that.

I thought I read a post saying they paid $149 for a recent update in a GC.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

It used to be when you bought a car your only additional costs were maintenance and repair costs. Now, they load the cars up with great features, but everything either needs to be updated or have a subscription.

Talk about residuals

I'm not complaining as I think a lot of the extras are good. But the price of map updates is based simply on the fact that once you have the built in unit there is no competition. You can't just wait for Best Buy to put a new unit on sale that comes complete with the latest maps.

I wonder, does the dealer get anything when these subscriptions are renewed?

Subscriptions, updates, monthly fees I can barely afford a bare bones Laredo E.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

I think they would do well if they offered free updates to the NAV and other tech during the warranty period and, if you purchase an extended warranty, updates would also be included with that.

Extended warranties are very profitable and the software updates, once developed, are essentially "free" to produce. I think many more customers would consider an extended warranty if it covered updates to all the tech too.

They are only free once you recoup the development costs. And after that, the developers to expect to make a profit. While I think they are over priced on all onboard systems, the concept of free after development shows a lack of understanding of the software business.
