Maybe it's just me, but where I come from, "serious" off-roading means gutted interiors, aftermarket beadlock wheels, tires that wouldn't last 20k miles with anything more than occassional highway use, steel bumpers with winches, and obviously the "my truck is bigger than yours" lift kits. However, I have seen some stock-ish ride height Wranglers and GC's hold their own on the trails, so you guys are fine there..

But seriously, how many of you guys looking at Overlands and Summits, and even loaded Limited's, plan on taking them "off-road" more than once every blue moon?.. I find in my observations that those who are overly concerned with built in off-road ability, never use it, and those who really do live on the trails, don't care what the factory installed, cause they'll strip it off for aftermarket stuff anyway. But hey - that's just where I come from.. To each his/her own.
Have you spent a lot of time in Colorado? If not, you'd be amazed what you see on the trail. I wish I wasn't on my phone so I could upload a photo of my currently daily driver. I think you'd get a kick considering I drive it 50 miles a day. 2007 JK, stick, 3.5" lift, 35" Wrangler MT/Rs, custom drive shafts, ARB lockers front and rear, plus a bunch of other random stuff. It has seen miles and miles of Colorado backcountry, trails rated up to a 7. Point is we don't always make a lot of sense out here.

I will definitely offroad my GC, whether a Limited Lux or Overland. Hard-core is relative. Nothing like my current Jeep can do, but those 50 miles a day will be a lot more comfortable. But definitely stuff I wouldn't try without skids or with 20" rims. Optioned right and driven with skill, this should be a very capable and practical mixed use vehicle with a fantastic interior.

As for what Specx said, thats true also. people look at these Jeeps in the pictures and see the dings, chips, scratches and creased leather and think what cheap materials and horrible quality. They do not look at a broad picture and think oh, 200 people must have entered and exited that jeep in the past 5 hours.
I have no pity what so ever for the rental car companies. They charge the previous guy for any dings or scratches, then forget to document it and try to charge the next guy too.

My routine is to do a complete walk around before I even open a door, take pix of anything I see, and take pix again when I drop it off. That has saved me more than once.

Add to that low tires, scary alignments, shot wiper blades....

How do you know what they charged the previous guy?

I've rented from all the majors and never had those kind of problems. Do you go to one of the places that promise lowest prices?

I like it when you specify a "Grand Cherokee" and you get a Sorento LOL. Those things feel like you're riding a horse and buggy... bumpity bump...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Features & Changes

40 years ago I used to run with a crowd of guys with CJs who would do ungodly things off road that caused a lot of damage and needed a lot of winching to make it home. I must admit it was a great adrenaline rush. I suppose there's a lot of that going on today with much better equipment. I wonder if the Jeep brand would be anywhere near as successful today if all of their vehicles catered to that group. I applaud those of you who keep up that tradition, but I also applaud Jeep for manufacturing vehicles for the more mundane of us who just like the safety, ruggedness, and all around driveability of a vehicle like the GC Overland or Summit. Please don't begrudge us that pleasure. Maybe a good concession would be a "Trail Rated" version tricked out like the old CJ rock crawlers and gully climbers. But, I think in the final analysis, those of you who practice the extreme off roading enjoy building your buggies just as much as you enjoy driving them. Lets all "Live Long and Prosper"!

^ Very well said. Here's a very interesting interview with Mike Manley discussing the Summit diesel, SRT, Grand Wagoneer, and Wrangler. At the end of the day it really is about something for everyone and still maintaining the Jeep heritage that we all love.

We sir, seem to be in the minority on this one.. Or maybe they all just missed my point. Or maybe we're in the minority bc they missed my point? (Hmmm... And to think, I thought I was pretty good at explaining things. )

Eh, whatever.. I'm sleepy. In the words of Paul McCartney, I'll just let it be.. I digress.

Nope, one of the majors. Usually run into issues at the smaller airports, the ones where the rental lot is a good walk from the terminal. The airports where, if you're flight is delayed, you pray the rental counter is still open when you land...

Good interview! Onscreen graphic said that was Gary Gastelu interviewing Manley - I say it was John-Boy Walton doing the interviewing.
