Mmmmm... the soft prattle of a diesel and the whiz of the turbo as you rip by someone on a mountian pass because they ran out of torque. :D

For me, the choice is clear, the CRD hands down.

Towing, MPG, and add in that she's only just slightly slower then the Hemi off the line and to 60... feh.

#2,243 ·
If you ask me, it's probably too early to decide between the CRD and the HEMI simply because we don't have all the numbers yet. We don't know the prices of the two versions and we don't know the new MPG-ratings either.

It isn't even confirmed yet if either the CRD or the HEMI (or perhaps both) will get a performance-bump in hp due to the new 8-speed or not and how the 8-speed will effect both vehicles in general.

Hmm, thinking about it, being a "spectator" over the next 2 years might not be that bad...:D

I think everyone is missing another important factor. I took a V6 2012 for a test drive and didn't like the feel of the car, I felt it was too heavy for the engine, although its a great engine the 2300kgs was just too much for it. When I got back to the dealer and told him he said I should try the CRD. I didn't consider the CRD as it is a 5k price option, but after driving the CRD the car was fantastic, all that torque made the car feel very smooth, not heavy and perfect. So I was sold on the CRD, and when I found this forum and the 2014 CRD is going to be worth the wait...

The 8speed might change this feel of the V6, though.

HAPPY THANKSDRINKING...I mean Thanksgiving to JGers! I'm so thankful for this site and all those that "leak" tidbits and give us feedback on their Jeeps!

The Pentastar RAM "build" is interesting. The HFE with stop-start, agile grille, and tonneau cover is rated 18/25 mpg. The SLT with a 3.55 is 17/25. Have to wonder if the .67 8th coupled with a 3.22 axle is too steep for the Pentastar.

Also the 305 hp rating makes me wonder if they haven't diddled with the cams to make it a little peakier, 8 speed could handle that better than 5. Has the torque curve been released ?

OTOH something like that is ideal for a diesel which has a narrower power band and lotsa low end torque.

One odd thing at Fueleconomy.gov is that for the 2013 RAM 1500, there are two 3.6s listed, one FFV (Flex-Fuel) and one not. Both are 17/25 mpg. Is this significant ?

I'd expect something more akin to 10%-14% personally, but, you never know.

Anyone care to leak more info on the possibility of the SRT getting a twin turbo / turbo V6? That would be great, as then i would have more reason to get it. Fuel here in Europe isn't given away like in the states and a twin turbo V6 would have much better MPG than the the old V8 they use at the moment. Don't get me wrong, i think it sounds awesome, but as my daily driver, i would prefer the better fuel economy. Yes the economy on the CRD is great and very economical, but there's something about the SRT that i've always wanted.

"GG tax applies to passenger cars, Jeeps are classified as trucks and therefore no tax"

Most Jeeps that is. In March 2012 the EPA released new classifications which called "Chrysler Grand Cherokee 2WD" as a "Large Non-Truck SUV" (line 414 appendix B) this appears to be the V6 since the MPG is 15.8 city/22.5 hwy. There is a second entry on line 585 for a "Large Truck SUV" "Chrysler Grand Cherokee 2WD" but this seems to be for the Hemi (13.8 city 19.6 hwy). There is a third entry for 4WD (line 560) which is also a Large Truck SUV" but appears to be a V6 again (15.1/21.1). Interesing how 15.1/21.1 becomes 16/22 on Fueleconomy.gov.

I posed this question some time ago when I came across the EPA report.

And the gov is never rong.

While we are on the subject, everyone MUST remember that the fuel economy estimates on the Monroney (Window) sticker are estimated by the automaker according to government standards....

They are not tested individually by the US Government...

... but they DO have to comply. ;)

Fueleconomy.gov says they are.. How Vehicles Are Tested

Also keep in mind, those numbers are "rough" at best and highly dependent on driver, driving conditions and other crap (like tire inflation).

#2,270 ·
The EPA numbers are dyno generated but the highway cycle is more route 66 and pre-Interstate. It is the same for everyone and a byproduct of emissions testing. Only trouble is that the EPA keeps "adjusting" them.

Agree not everyone drives as if they had an egg under their foot and the most important single thing anyone can do is to keep the tires properly inflated.

That said I did not buy the GC for its MPG. I bought it for its load capacity, towing capability, features, and to a lesser extent, its comfort & styling. "Value" was important.

It is not perfect. I do not care for the chrome grille, it is about 2" too high, and it runs hotter than I like. Not bothered enough to do anything about them. Yet.

Personally, I prefer an American car though there is a question of whether any such thing still exists. Am attracted to a DOHC 6 with FI & VVT. Would have preferred a turbo diesel but not available yet, will have to run a cost-benefit study when it is.

But for now my GC does exactly what I want it to do and provides a rolling electronic test bed for my toys.

Know am odd since I do not believe in multi-purpose vehicles, rather each should be very good at one thing. Fortunately in this country it is easy to have more than one.

Would love to see an interior color change regarding the Limited and the Light Beige Frost in particular. Count me in the CRD waiting group. Looking for a Limited if options are similar to last year's and would rather have a light interior color but if it's between the frost beige and black I'd have to say black it is. I'd choose the Greystone interior from the Laredo if available in the Limited but alas. Waiting till June 2013 (at the earliest) for delivery is going to be tough!

#2,273 ·
Yes.

#2,276 ·
Doesn't look a whole lot different from the 2011 version I have now.

#2,277 ·
The main concern I have is can you hit the panic button on the keyfob when you see a moose crossing the road in front of you because there's no way to avoid a roll-over at that point. If so, what does the panic button do for you at that point?

#2,281 ·
Is that in the manual somewhere? I would like to see the illustrations, I'm better seeing it than reading it. :)

Milous, will those be model specific again, i.e. Summit will only have the black olive ash?
