Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

The Lexus RX line went from 18 city 24 highway with a 5 speed to 20 mpg city 26 mpg highway with an 8 speed. Just for comparison's sake.

Im gonna guess 27 on the Pentastar and 24 on the Hemi. 31 on the diesel (hwy)

Those are my uneducated guesses.

Bill,

Sorry for the late reply to your question. Go with the Hemi! "New diesels" I mean the diesels that have to meet stringent emission requirements. I had a Cummins engineer tell me that "Its not good for these (new) diesel's to be eating their own s##t" This photo is from a late model Jetta TDI. I will stick to the gas models when it comes to suv's and car's. Not worth the gamble owning a headache, not to mention trying to sell something that nobody wants.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

Wow, it is on the internet so it must be true.
Being the owner of a CRD JGC I have had no problems and I have about 10,000mi on mine.
From the research I have done, the CRD in our cars is less prone to blocked DFP as their DFP is right up near the turbo and does not need a cleaning cycle. The wife drove my car for the first 12 months, doing mainly short trips (under 3mi). No problems like many of the euros have.
I do not understand why there is such a negative viewpoint on Diesel in the USA, I guess ignorance is prevalent when it comes to facts. Just like Gun Control....

No All, but some cannot see the facts from the fiction and just believe what they read on the internet as gospel.
Unfortunately the world is full of stupid and crazy people. Just do not give them Diesel cars or guns...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

Well you can thank GM for destroying the American market for automotive diesels. Meanwhile my '86 RV still gets 27-30 mpg and weighs 6300 lbs.

BTW was that Jeddi TDI running on bio-diesel ? I have seen that happen before particularly with vegetable oil from restaurants.

Personal opinion but a TD is much more efficient than any octane-limited gasoline engines particularly in the American market (engines tend to be 40-50% larger here than in Europe).

BTW just filled up with 87 PON for under U$3/gal. Wonder how long this will last.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

I'm an American living (stationed) in Germany and have some experience with Diesels (my own Golf TDI and several rental SUVs). I would use the VW Touareg as a benchmark for expectations for the JGC CRD Fuel Efficiency -- expect 31-32 with the 8 speed (EPA tends to be a bit forgiving of US companies). The Touareg 8 speed, with the TDI feels similar to a 2012 JGC Hemi (My butt meter) at near twice the MPG -- for normal driving.

Whether it makes financial sense to pay for an up charge for the Diesel, do some simple math. Since it provide a similar driving experience as the Hemi, I calculated payback based on it ($1500 up charge). We put almost 20K miles per year on a car, so it will pay for itself in 2 years. The driving experience will payoff coming of the lot... Modern Diesels are that good IMO.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

Best price for Diesel fuel in my area today is $3.69. Best price for 89 Octane fuel today is $2.91. That's also significant.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

Thought I would lay out my thought process:

89 Oct at $2.91 driving 18,000 miles per year at 16.6 MPG requires 1084 gallons costing $3,155.42

Diesel at $3.69 driving 18,000 miles per year at 28 MPG requires 643 gallons costing $2,372.14 .

It costs $783.28 more to drive the hemi per year, so it would take 1 year 11 months to make up a $1500 premium over the Hemi. We keep cars at least 5 years, so we'll end up saving major $$. Diesel is more expensive during winter months when heating oil is in high demand, so the payback time is likely less (assuming prices remain stable ).

I used the Australian Combined figures so as to compare apples to apples. Lots of variables, how much you drive, type of driving (city/hwy), and how you drive. I'm not all that green, so I didn't calculate pollutants.

YMMV

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - MPG? Let the speculations begin!

I would expect the up charge to be more like $3K, and don't forget about the increase in maintenance and repair charges, especially the twice as frequent oil changes!
