I wouldn't say "full refresh", but brand new model. And it's Model year 2017. Calendar year 2016.

Just got a call back from the mechanic on the Explorer. They fixed the rusted-through brake lines but after they put it up on the lift, other lines broke and started leaking so replaced those too. He said, "that vehicle scares the crap out of me and my service manager. I can't believe you're actually driving it. From a liability standpoint I gotta make sure you understand there's some real concern there and I want to make sure you know you're on borrowed time". Sigh, yes - I know.

I sure hope that "late june" estimate for the CRD doesn't change.

You know how some say, "I drive 'em until the wheels fall off"? Nobody told me that was a figure of speech!

I chuckle a little when I see people say "I keep my vehicles a really long time - usually at least 8 years." If you average all the vehicles I've ever owned (all 2 of them!), so far the average time I've kept a vehicle is 22 years.

In the upper Midwest, if you drive the vehicle year round it is next to impossible to get that kind of longevity. Longest I have gone is 12 years, and even with weekly car washes with the underbody flush eventually the salt catches up no matter what you do.

My dad's truck is a 99 ford f250 light duty. There is not 1 spec of rust on it. It has 180,000 miles on it as of a week ago. The trick is finding somewhere with good undercoating. Or living in California.

Normally I'd apologize for going off-topic, but seeing as how that seems to be the norm in this thread, I won't.

Well, not to get into a "which place is worse" argument, but I did grow up in the Northeast with heavily salted roads. Frankly, I think it's worse here in CA - at least where I live. In the NE, you at least only had salt for about half the year (winter + most of the spring, as the salt was still washing off the roads). Here I get it 365 days a year.

But anyway, I didn't say it was *easy* to keep a vehicle for that long - my 26 year old vehicle (which also is the one that spent a decent chunk of its life in the Northeast) has had a full frame-off restoration, which I guess you might say is "cheating" in the context of this discussion, but it still doesn't change the average age of my vehicles.

I've been considering trying Chrysler/MOPAR's Max Shield protection option, which brings with it a lifetime warranty against rust. (HA!) I'd normally say I'd make out like a bandit on that one, but if you read the fine print there's a max payout of $3K. But still, seems like at $500-$600 to do it, I'd likely get my money back and then some.

I should clarify. I'm saying if you don't want rust move to California... We are in Michigan.

Yes, I got that. I was saying that I'm in California and at my particular location in CA, I argue it's worse than the Midwest/Northeast. You have to be more specific than "California" for rust-free goodness. :-)

Which was what? Oh, I think something about CRDs. And congrats Jimbo, beautiful Jeep. Enjoy it.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

To blend back into original topic....I'm one of those still getting jerked around in terms of ordering a CRD...so I had just under $2K of work done to my current ride yesterday to get it in tip-top shape again...

I hear you, being near salt water, you get corrosion in some interesting places and there is not anything you can do about it.

My point was at the point when I find myself spending more time fighting rusted fasteners than the time spend to do the maintenance, or once the slightest signs of rust bubbles start to show under the paint... thats when I get ready to trade it in.

Oh yeah, and what was the original topic again, CRDs being delayed or the $500 price increase on the HEMI??
