Audi, benz,BMW and mercedes will always be tremendously more expensive then a jeep as maintenance progresses and the vehicles get older.

I will post some simple items and you guys can feel free to ask questions.

Mercedes run full synthetic and you must use their specific blend not just any old Diesel Syn. You can buy a Mobil 1 version of their oil but it has to have their rating.

You must do a full tranny service every 40,000 miles.... I don't know of any modern tranny that goes through fluid like that.

Ask a Dodge guy who still services the 07,08 Merc Diesel how many oil leaks they get. Mine was an 09 and the newer motor etc and I had tranny and engine oil leaks every year ( I thought it was because of the heavy towing I do but the dodge guys tell me the old ones leaked lots)..... maybe this is why you need to service the tranny so often

There were tons of other little issues but if I stick just the regular stuff Google their A, B, C, D service system. The car tells you what service you have to do and the latest revision units the Dealer needs to reset the computer using a special tool to make sure you did the service (on my ML you held a few buttons on the dash during start up to clear the message if I got it serviced at private shop to try and save money).

Lastly about the service schedule... I DARE you to try and figure out what services are actually due with an A B C or D service. It is not clear at all and I got widely different versions of what I needed to do at each visit.

Yes you get to change your oil on a Mercedes at extended intervals BUT each visit is going to cost a lot. "A" is supposed to be an oil change only but do you think my vehicle wanted only an oil change in the last year or 30,000 miles noooooo.... my average visit was always around $600.00, no brakes no extra repairs just maintenance.

The first 2 years are OK.... it gets expensive after that.

So I don't go on forever.... VW Audi is a fair bit cheaper but the schedule is definitely higher than Dodge. BMW costs the same as the Mercedes (from my X5 Diesel buddy's perspective when we used to get together and complain about service costs)

I agree. I bought a three year old 328i and my first paid oil change was $150.00. Plus I hate run flats. You can't repair them, you just replace them. And then of course they tell you you need three more to match the wear.

BMW doesn't have free maintenance on anything..you paid for all your 4 years in that price you gave them before you drive off the lot.

Thank god.... someone else who has experienced the pillage! I know we are way off topic but as the Diesel is still an option feature it is worth discussing.

German 8 speed transmission + European Diesel + North American maintenance costs= Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel.

I loved my Mercedes Bluetec for everything except the service visits. Same platform but without all the fuss and $20,000 less! What a bargain.... Jeep!
(No I don't work for ChryFi marketing.... just a euro Diesel ExPat)

That's the stupidest way I've ever heard of someone evaluating value of something. It is free. Is it priced into the car? Of course it is. But what isn't? When comparing value, you go by the price you pay, not what you think you should pay.

To be fair though. It was the best driving sedan I've ever owned. Lol

From someone who has worked for a manufacturer... you get very little actual needed maintenance during that time. The manufacturer makes sure they pay for the absolute minimum you need to do on the car. After that it is ridiculous what they charge maintenance and for repairs. Compare the old ML320 from 2008 and the JGC from 2008 and tell me the people who bought the Merc didn't pay more. So ya, it used to be a different vehicle. BUT NOW the Cherokee is on the same platform and has way more tech for the dollar value. I drove the new ML, ya it is a little faster than the old ML and it is $75.000 before I get the options I want plus all the maintenance circus for the next 5 years. Looked at the BMW and it was even MORE and I am sure you don't actually get the same value out of that extra maintenance they "pay for for free"

I really liked mine too.... but the Durango handles really well on the ML platform. If it didn't have the Goodyear forteras it would be very comparable to my old ML!

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

It's not just maintenance though. It's also repair. I had my brakes and rotors replaced. At no cost. And I got a loaner.

That job, even at an indie mech, would have cost a ton of money. And the service at the dealer preserves resale value. It's a very nice perk and one that would make me buy a BMW again if I'm ever back in the market for a sedan.
