Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Reviews on the GLK250 describe it as sluggish. Hwy rating is 33mpg. It may be too economy oriented and will lack the punch of the JGC CRD. This may be due to gear selection and programming designed to resist downshifting of the 7-speed auto. 200hp shouldn't feel "sluggish" when peak torque is 1600-1800 rpm.

One of the operations managers at a company I do some work for has the GLK350 and Drove the GLK250 and he said it goes pretty good. But I do agree it is definitely set up for fuel economy. The ML350 Bluetec on the other hand is a small rocket. It outdoes its gas engine counterpart in 0-60 handily.

I really liked the way every Mercedes I drove handled and the performance aspect was always amazing. I might even say I can handle the price premium but.... Go read some Mercedes forums about service costs and huge differences between recommendations. That might be normal with other brands but the car tells you which service you need to get done then the service department gives you a translation on what that means. For some reason it is not actual clear and that always bothered me....

Actual dealer conversation: "You are due for the C Major service sir, that will be $1200.00". Pardon, I don't remember buying tickets to the orchestra? And what do you mean there is only 40,000 miles on the car? "Full transmission service required to keep your warranty valid sir"

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

WillX,

Thanks for the info. I have an older Mercedes SD300SD...one of the toughest cars on earth. I too am scared of the newer MBZ technology and rediculous maintenance schedules and associated expense.

The JGC CRD is intended to be a mostly highway business vehicle on a 4 year company vehicle program. It woulnd see 150k in 4 years then be sold. I wonder if the GLK250 would economically make it that far. New trannies should go that far with very little attention. I generally do my own service. Isn't it illegal in the US to require mandatory factory service to maintain warranty?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

The magnuson-moss act prevents something like that. It's a little murky to this non-lawyer's eyes so maybe a lawyer among us can shed light on the matter?

I didn't drive the ML350 when I test drove the GLK50, as it was a bigger and more costly vehicle than I needed/wanted. Today I drove a Q5 2.0. I liked it even better than the GLK250. A little bigger (but not too big, which for me the JGC almost is), roomier, more zip, better handling, more comfortable than the GLK250 (even my wife thought the Q5 was more comfortable). Reviews also seem much better for the Q5 over the GLK250. Comparably equipped the Q5 is a little more money, but a well equipped Q5 TDI will run me about what I was going to spend on the Summit CRD, and that is factoring in paying sticker for the Q5 and 1% below invoice on the Summit CRD. The Audi dealer had about six Q5 TDIs coming in the August timeframe. I didn't care for any of the colors, so am considering ordering one at their next allocation which is this coming Wednesday. More thinking, reading and comparing to do in the next couple days.

I can easily see myself driving the Q5 TDI instead of the CRD, especially if I can order one next week. I understand these are different vehicles from the JGC, but for my needs, they will do the job just fine. I don't need to tow big loads, don't plan on going off-road, etc. and these smaller diesels get better fuel economy to boot. The only nagging concern is the long term maintenance/repair costs of these luxury Euro brands. Most people I've talked to have had good luck with them and no major repairs. My wife loved her Subaru Forester, but her cousin had nothing but problems with hers. I guess that can happen with any brand. If nothing else, the CRD got me interested in diesel SUVs and hopefully will end up with a diesel in my garage yet this year. This forum has been not only an invaluable source of information, but entertainment as well :-).

I didn't know the Q5 had a TDI option. Thanks for the info. The diesel blossom now seems to be leaving the Jeep in the dust.

Audi just announced pricing and you can now order the Q5 TDI. First dealer deliveries expected in August. When I drove the Q5 2.0 it had quite a bit of zip, the 3.0L TDI will probably leave it in the dust and still get an EPA 24/31 (hmmm, somehow Audi figured out how to get the EPA approval for it's 3.0 diesel...).

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

What is sticker on the Q5 TDI? I've always been a fan of VW/Audi styling. My 2005 Golf TDI was the most reliable car I ever had. I still regret selling it. It was the right choice at the time, given that we needed a bigger car and it was coming up on 100k miles but it did what it needed to do well.

Also to prior posts on Magnus-moss. Sure, warranty will be read to the letter as long as you follow their schedule but there are 3 problems with this that I have personal experience. On the Mercedes you must use their special version of Mobil 1 ESP which is only available from them. Plus I did get some out of warranty goodwill stuff for the pile of things that went wrong just out of the warranty. I know people at MB and there is no goodwill or any factory assistance on anything that is grey area for Mercedes if you didn't do their maintenance, plus it won't qualify for this used "star" warranty when you trade it so they nick you on your trade value.

There are no legal problems with those areas. They get you one way or another.

I know the VW Audi stuff is a little less expensive and certainly more straight forward

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

This is my .02. Jeep really has screwed themselves with the CRD. Also people who were waiting on the CRD and gave up and went on ahead and ordered the V8 has shown Jeep that in the US the V8 is going to rule vs the diesel. In turn Jeep has added an up-charge to the already "premium priced" engine. Sales of the V8 have rocketed because of consumers being tired of being screwed on the CRD model. In scotts post on the diesel would be his last. The diesel may never show up because consumers have gave up on it and have just went with the V8.

If I have run on sentences and such, I'm blaming it on my hangover.

Hungover or not....you make perfect sense. If Jeep cant come up with some form of valid communication then I'm out of here. I'm extremely disappointed.

My current knowledge is that the EcoDiesel is still coming and that is will arrive in late September or early October. On the rest of it I agree with you. They likely shot themselves in the foot a few times with the launch. The there are a lot of people that went to another brand though because Chrysler Corporate made the dealers look like fools. I will write run on sentences from here on in for protest!
