VERY CONCERNED! I think it's really only rated to like 410 or something like that.
I spoke with someone who did testing on the new 8HP70 with the CRD.
He believed the average long term reliability of the 8HP70 with the 3.0 diesel would be borderline. I asked, why didn't they go to the 8HP90?

He said if they go to the 8HP90, the EPA rated MPGs would suffer. He said something about the fuel burned at idle being the main reason for the different numbers; this part got technical and I really didn't understand it.

The person I spoke with was at a public event. I didn't get his name and I don't know who he worked for. He, perhaps, shared too much information.

Someone check other applications of the 8HP with 3.0 liter diesels. I think the others also use the 8HP70 and not the 8HP90.

I understand why they went with the 8HP70. Personally, I would prefer the 8HP90. Do I hear future option?

I am getting the extended warranty.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

It will be interesting to see what type of extended warranty is offered & what is covered. I have heard that they won't offer a lifetime on the diesel but I'm sure they could cover the transmission separately. One repair on either would probably break even on the cost of the extended warranty.

I can't see there being a durability issue with the 8HP70. They have been building amazing tranny's forever. Also this is the underpinning for the entire fleet of RAMs including the Diesel. I thought the ZF sourced Tranny was one of the best things to happen for CDJ IMHO.

Actually I am going to say there is no issues with this thing with a hopped up Diesel. The 8HP70 is in everything from the BMW X5 to the 7 Series plus all major Euro Brands other than Mercedes. We are not talking about a transmission that was engineered lightly here. This transmission was designed with high Torque Diesels as being it's primary feeder.

Not sure who the tester is but this exact transmission basically makes up the fleet of European Diesel Power luxury vehicles. I cant see them putting a marginal transmission in the 7 Series BMW, besides every other Car they make!

That was very true with the previous diesel...I wonder if that will change with this new version if the EcoDiesel JGC becomes more mainstream. (Once it actually becomes available. Someday.)

I have a Ford Excursion with the 7.3L Power stroke. I estimate, based on dynos of similar setups, it makes around 400RWHP with tuning, exhaust, injectors and turbo mods. Thats probably close to 500hp at the crank. That's the practical limit for reliability with the stock rods and crank.

My tuner holds 16 programs an switches on the fly from a dash mounted selector.I currently have Stock, 40hp tow, 60hp tow, 80hp econo, and 120hp race programs with modified shift points. The injectors and turbo add additional power to the tuning alone. I drive it on 80 Eco all the time. I tow a 3 axle toy hauler loaded to 12k pounds regularly. The tranny died at 120k and a "bulletproof" rebuild solved that issue. Towing killed the stocker. I currently have 160k on the truck with no sign of engine wear.

Driving in the higher settings yields better mileage if you keep your foot out of it. I get 20 to 22 mpg at 70 mph depending on terrain and wind.

Diesel Power is the only way.

Well, keep in mind, the Diesel isn't just slated for the Grand. They also have it on tap for the RAM, the Dart, the Wrangler/Rubicon, and the C200/300 if I recall (plus more than likely, the Grand Wagoneer).

They will pretty much *have* to add the diesels to the Lifetime program with that many vehicles sporting it.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Hello everyone,
I just put an order in on an Overland last week and received an e-mail from Jeep with the VIN today. Seems to be an awful short VIN compared to some vehicles, Two letters and six numbers. Is this the whole and final VIN? Also, Where is the plant located where the Grand Cherokee is made.
Thanks to everyone, you all have been a big help here.

They just provide the last 8 of your VIN. Your dealer should have the whole thing, but if I'm not mistaken they all start with 1C4RJFCT8

The 3.0 is not going in the Dart or the 200. It will very likely transfer to the Durango if there is uptake.

There is a different Diesel possibly for the Dart but it is not the 3.0 for sure.
