Called today. Still in paint. Must be getting one heck of a paint job, otherwise they are going to be shopping a 5000 pound glob of paint

I'm confused that MOTS and VOTS are out of sync on your truck. I can only hope mine is ahead of status too!

Maybe you are getting 14 coats of paint like the old Mercedes cars got. Might help with corrosion resistance!

I love the Alubeam from mercedes. It is so work intensive they can only paint 3 every week, that's only 156 cars a year. I don't think I would want a car like this though. It looks just like polished aluminum. It kind of has a raw unfinished look to it. Like AA's old paint scheme, none. They just had a few stripes. The most expensive paint job is so the car doesn't look painted at all.

Quote:
Mercedes sprays on seven layers, each fleck carefully aligned with the one below. Before spraying seven layers, paint-shop workers must make the car's aluminum body even smoother than normal. Compared to the sand-like appearance of normal metallic paint, the diamond-shaped flecks in Alubeam are thinner and more uniform. This is what gives Alubeam a deep, slippery look.

...it costs $12,750... just for the paint job.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

I assure you all, nobody's car is in paint longer than the required couple hours, unless there's an issue in paint/breakdown..

The problem with the tracking update (or lack there of) is related to something in the plant, and as I said before, the status doesn't change until the vehicle is recieved by the next phase of the build process. So (again), a car can enter paint, and leave paint, but WILL NOT update until it begins trim install.. So... you do the math.

I also noted a while back that a status won't change for a specific order if a vehicle is deemed scrap at any phase of the process and is rescheduled. There's no framing then paint, then back to framing as far as the updates go.. You won't see that.

Lastly there's the obvious system glitches where a car is assumed to sit in a production phase for days, then the next update says its sitting in yard ready to ship.

So just keep all that in mind.. There are other reasons why the tracking doesn't match reality, but there's no need to go into that when I know they don't apply to this particular situation.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Just out of sheer curiosity - How often would a build be 'scrapped?' Does that even happen? It would seem that there would have to be a really major screw-up that went unnoticed for something like that to happen, but I really have no idea.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Kevin, given the fast rate that the assembly line moves along, it may very well be a lot more efficient to "scrap" a partially completed vehicle that has major issues than to try and fix it. May be better for the ultimate consumer, too. I doubt it happens a lot, however...

I don't know if JNAP has them but those little automatted vehicle carriers that drive around the factory have caused some damage in the past when they screw up... Used to know one of the guys who serviced them at the GM plant, some interesting stories!

Anyway I am sure the Chrysler ones are newer and better than the ones I seen.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Cars can be scrapped at any part of the build process for various reasons. It happens more often than you'd think.. Most common is after paint.

Scrapping a car during the Assembly process is rare, but has happened too. Ive seen cars fully assembled that were headed to the junk pile. Again, for various reasons.

I have the feeling mine was scrapped after they assembled it. It's been in "shipment" for 2 weeks.

I guess they mounted it up on the mule drawn barge along the Erie Canal to New York Harbor where the waiting Clipper Ship takes it down to be hauled across the Honduran isthmus by goat, to finally catch a steamer to San Francisco. That's where the Ox team picks it up for the trip south.

But, hey, at least it doesn't have to come around the horn.
