Also, about the oil, Jiffy Lube will tell you they have the oil when they don't. They have no problem using the wrong oil in your car. If their computer says it's ok then it's ok. If your manual says something different, if the manufacturer says something different, if your dealer says something different, according to Jiffy Lube they are wrong.

I know Pep Boys sells oil that meets the Chrysler MS-11106 spec and they will change it for you.

The total oil does not list the Chrysler or vw spec. I do remember reading for the '11\'12 wk2 diesels that as long as the oil met either the Chrysler or mb 229.51 spec it was good. I will not use the total if the is any doubt. Do you know what the Chrysler spec is? Specifically what property is the spec calling out?

The Only information I have is what it shows in the "2014 Grand Cherokee
OWNER’S MANUAL DIESEL SUPPLEMENT"; it also says the same exact thing including spelling mistakes in the User's Guide.
Quote:
We recommend you use ACEA C3 5W-30 engine oil meeting Chrysler material standard MS-11106 or Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil
I don't know what MS-11106 has for requirements. I do know more or less based upon what the three oils specs are that I can find.

Personally, I know for sure "Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30" has builder approval and the above mentioned Pennzoil.

Amsoil spends their time meeting builder specifications not getting builder approval.

Amsoil technical support staff said they have no oil at present that they are claiming meets MS-11106 or that should be used in a 2014 JGC Diesel.

They have a product that meets all of the below builder specs and they still say we can't recommend it for your 2014 JGC Diesel. This has caused me to be careful when choosing an oil.
(In My VW manual it actually says you might die if you use the wrong oil.)

AMSOILŪ European Car Formula 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil Meets these specs.
  • VW 504.00/507.00
  • Mercedes-Benz 229.51
  • BMW LL-04
  • Porsche C30

One last thing, mobil 1 comes in Liters, great for VW's bad for Jeeps.
How many liters is 8 quarts? 7.57 The pennzoil comes is quarts. It would be better still if it came in gallons. Your new 2014 JGC Diesel uses 2 gallons of Oil.

That's still better than my ram 3500 diesel which uses three gallons of oil.

That's still better than my motorhome which uses 7.3 gallons (29.2 quarts) of oil. I'm getting that oil change on Tuesday.

Although, it only needs to get done once a year or every 20k miles.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

MS-11106 is just Chryser's copy of Mercedes Benz's MB-229.51. A complete list of compatible oils can be found at:

MB 229.51 - Low SPAsh multigrade service engine oils (Specification 229.51) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids

Dont get too caught up on meeting this specification, likely any low ash full synthetic oil made for diesel use will be fine.

On the one hand, we have a company, who's general goal is to sell motor oil, among other things, telling a customer that they can't be helped at this time.

On the other, we have a comparison that the two specs, the Chrysler spec that Amsoil apparently does not support and the MB spec that they do, are the same thing and not to worry about it.

If the specs are in fact the same, then it would seem that Amsoil will mention compatibility at a later date, particularly when the Diesels start actually hitting the street. It may perhaps be too early for a notice from someone like Amsoil.

But it seems prudent at this time to note the contrary positions.

I looked into Amsoil back when I had my CRD and they said their oil (named euro something, can't remember right now) exceeded the the MB229.51 but they didn't have certification for meeting the spec.

Yes, this is true; it seems Amsoil does not have any or seek builder approvals.

Amsoil has been it the synthetic business longer than anyone I think.

Currently, Amsoil has 3 different European Car Formulas. None of which according to them has met Chrysler's Material Standard(MS)-11106.

I have not had access to the text of the different standards to compare; but Amsoil said that Mercedes-Benz'es 229.51 is slightly different from Chrysler's Material Standard(MS)-11106.

That said, I wouldn't have any problem using Amsoil "AEL" Formula in my 2014 JGC CRD, (if it wash't under warranty). "AEL" = {Amsoil} - {European} - {Low sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur (SAPS)}.

I'm sure, in the future they will have something.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

Its all personal preference, but Amsoil is a dirty burning oil. I say personal preference because for every "I wouldnt run it in my weedeater" statement, you have someone who says, "Been running it 25 years and never an oil problem".

I am one of those who shys away from Amsoil after seeing what the inside of engines look like after running Amsoil vs. other oils out there in the market. I personally will stick with one on thier list, or get my oil changed at the dealership (depending on what they will be charging for an oil change). Right now its $20 for my wife's jeep since we bought it there and are a "prefered customer" but there is no telling what it will be for the CRD cost wise, certainly not $20.
