fun2drive, se3.5, and hotspur:

Thank you much for your replies! I decided, based on what you all said, that I really do need to see them first hand so I got out to the dealership on my lunch break. I think I'm now set with the options I want!

He confirmed that their dealership will register your vehicle online with the CA DMV and forward the sales taxes electronically to the State Board of Equalization as you pick up your vehicle, just as they do for residents of Texas. CA DMV will mail your registration and plates to you in a few weeks. I also got this same confirmation from my local credit union when I contacted them about a car loan.

Mine was unloaded at the Westfield rail yard on Tuesday, and was on its way to the dealer yesterday, so I'll be finalizing my pickup arrangements with Mark soon!

01-20-14 UPDATE:
OK, I'm making my final arrangements to fly in to Houston this week and spoke with Mark this morning. Apparently, the dealership's title person thought (all of a sudden) that they could not register a car here in California, and told him something to the effect that it would have to have at least 7500 miles before it could be registered.

While they were checking it out on their end, I looked it up at noon on the CA DMV website, and found this link: Before Buying a Vehicle From Out of State .

The bottom line is, California considers any car with less than 7500 miles as a new car; all new cars must be certified to pass California's smog laws. If a car is 50-state certified, as is the 2014 JCG 3.0, then it can be registered here.

The California EPA Air Resources Board Certification (albeit a conditional certification) was posted here on JG back in October; shortly thereafter, the newly built diesels began arriving here in the state.

As a double check (or, "daaaauuuble check"), I asked Mark to just verify before I fly there to pick up my Summit that the CARB sticker is present, and that the CA DMV will register it. If I have any problems, I'll post up here.

01-25-14 UPDATE:

Regarding the California emissions, this morning I went down to my local Jeep dealer in Huntington Beach, and took this pic of a Summit 3.0 on their lot:

A couple of days ago, Mark took a pic of the emissions sticker on my Summit in his warehouse:

As you can see, the emissions stickers are the same.

As I mentioned in a prior post, I debunked the alleged CA DMV "7500 mile" rule and provided a link to the CA DMV's website. So the next step was to see what I could find about the emissions requirements on the California Air Resources Board website, here: CARB website emissions requirements .

In the pics, the label reads:
California: LEV II LDT OBD: CA OBD II Fuel: Diesel

Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV) Lev II Program requirements are found in the CARB link above. "LDT" = Light Duty Truck, which is what SUVs like the Grand Cherokee are considered; and the label indicates it also meets "OBD II" standards. These are the current standards in California.

So to summarize, even though the dealer hasn't confirmed it, I'm convinced that it's 50-state legal and can be registered here in CA. As soon as Mark returns my call, I plan to fly in next week to seal the deal and drive it back home. Of course, I'll post up when that happens, or if for some reason it falls through.

In the meantime, hope this helps others from CA.

Gary

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee - Ordering Information and Pricing

I have a question about the prices listed in the thread (thanks Milous!). Let me give an example of an option for the Limited 4x4:

OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE II (AWY) N/A W/AWL [MSRP $1,795 / INV. $ 1,598] with EXF or EZH: [MSRP $2,495 / INV. $ 2,221]

Is the price "with EXF or EZH" the second listing, $2495/$2221? Or the first one, $1795/$1598? I was thinking the second one, however it's higher than the first... and why would they increase the option price (and sort of penalize you) for buying an optional engine? So I'm not sure I'm interpreting correctly.

With most other such options, the second price is lower than the first. This is the only one that has a higher second price.

AFAIK, this "special circumstance" of a higher price for the Adventure Package with the engine upgrade has something to do with the fact that the package has extensive features with the HEMI and Diesel.

If you take a close look at the content of the Off-Road package, you will see that some features only come with the Diesel or HEMI, so the Package "expands" with these engines and therefore, gets more expensive. Here are the features of the package that are tied to the optional engines:

• Elec LTD Slip Differential Rr Axle (DSF) (with 3.0L or 5.7L)
• Quadra-Drive II 4WD System (AWB) (with 3.0L or 5.7L)
• Selec-Speed (TM) Control (BNK) (with 5.7L)

I flipped through the > 600 pages in this thread but didn't see what I was looking for (could easily have missed it though, and if I did, I'm sorry for reposting!). The options I'm concerned about -

  1. Lux II - How much better is the leather in this version than the standard leather in the Limited? Ideally I'd go to a dealership to compare, but the timeframe I'm trying to order and my schedule doesn't seem to be lining up. I've looked at pictures, but I wanted to get some opinions. Is there a significant difference in quality?
  2. Lux II - also, the panoramic sunroof - for those of you with the Lux II package, do you feel the extra sunroof space has been good? Any concerns about it? Anyone wish the had just gone with a standard single pane (or no) sunroof?
  3. Tow Hitch - to get a tow hitch on the limited, without going aftermarket, do I have to get the trailer tow group IV? Are the additional components in that package worth just getting the tow package from the factory vs. aftermarket tow hitch?
  4. Off-road 1 - there's a discount on this with the trailer tow group IV, but if I don't plan to do any off roading, there's not really any reason to get this group, right? Or is there some benefit to this package even for non-off road?

Sorry if those last few questions seem basic; I've only ever bought sporty cars so my mindset of what I'm looking for has drastically changed with this new purchase!
I got a Summit so the pan sunroof was included and not a delete option - if it was I'd have deleted it in second - it costs you a couple inches of headroom and they are prone to leaks - plus I never use them - I'm 6'3 and the lost headroom was a concern to me - I was worried I'd feel my hair rubbing on the roof but it's ok - still have room for an Elvis pompadoor if I wanted to grow one.
