I posted this on here about a month ago, but an email from a Chrysler Area Sales Manager (actually an @chrysler.com address, not a rep from a dealer) was sent out on March 5th.

It said:

I posted this on here about a month ago, but an email from a Chrysler Area Sales Manager (actually an @chrysler.com address, not a rep from a dealer) was sent out on March 5th.

It said:
-------------------
Team,

We have been advised by HQ that the diesel will not be available for build until May for June build.

XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

XXXXXXXXXX Area Sales Manager
XXXXX@chrysler.com
--------------------

So it does seem like this is still the story they had planned to go with, it's just different than the 'Milous Version'
This is the same as what Milous last reported.... May 14 production start, with a "tenative" 4/4 order opening date. Meaning we would start seeing them show up on lots end of June or July. It also flows somewhat with what Jeep executives have stated of seeing CRDS on lots sometime in Q2.

Now we are hearing ORDERING won't even open until June or July, meaning production won't start until At least July, and we won't see them showing up on lots until September or later.

That means either they are having MAJOR issues with the CRD or someone really really doesn't know how to plan.

I am ranting, but basically what I am saying is, I am getting sick of Jeep's excuses. The only saving grace they might have is offering a $2,000+ rebate on the CRD when it is available. Otherwise I feel like the are just stringing us "suckers" along.

Very desapointing at all.

Can somebody who work in the plant give me a hit, when exactely they are able to start with the 3.0 CRD for the European Market?

I made my order already in January and made a first payment. This with the acreement, that the car will be available in July / August.

Unfortunately the Fiat Suisse SA can't or don't want to give any further information, when the new Grand Cherokee will come to the market!!

The point is, when August doesn't work, I will cancel the contract and buy an other car.

I'm not interested to wait almost a year for a car!!!

Gigi

I guess they're going to produce the jgc crd the same time as the crd wrangler which will be 2015. Good times

Take a ride in a Touareg TDI before you say that. They did something very wrong in the paring between the engine and the transmission. My neighborhood has a long 25mph zone and, during a test drive, it was easy to get sea sick on that part, the thing changed gears so much. Unfortunately, there is nothing out there that will be as nice as this JGC CRD. I share your frustration, I have been waiting since they were supposed to release the CRD with the 2013s.

Just got off the phone with my local dealer in Walnut Creek, CA. He said he got a memo today saying that diesel orders are being pushed back a month to May. So they'll take orders for allocation in May, and then do production in June. Which means the first CRD models would arrive on dealer lots in July.

Of course, he did acknowledge we could have this same conversation again in 4 weeks :)

I just spent 30 minutes spec'ing out a Touareg as well. It's unbelievable to me that a company that's been building cars for over 70 years can't stick to a simple project timeline. Do you not know how long it takes to design/test/refine/build new models? How can you be off by 4 months? That's not a couple weeks - it's almost half a year.

So, is this the right thread to start a discussion on whether we should switch to Touaregs vs a V6 or a V8?

Touareg doesn't have a lot of the "nice to have" features (all the cool electronics in the GC, reclining / fold flat rear seats, heated rear seats).

V6 seems a bit slow off the line and will probably have some trouble passing slower drivers going up hill on mountain roads (but has comparable mileage).

V8 gives you the power and the features but with ~17mpg.

Thoughts?

No, this isn't the right thread to start a Toureg or v6 vs v8 debate. Start a new topic for that please.

I've been waiting quite a while for a vehicle that would excite me enough to replace my 2003 Murano. When the Jeep CRD announcements started last year, I thought this could be the one. While I continue to be disappointed month after month with the delays, I still don't see anything else out there that I'd rather buy, especially with my desire to buy American. I'm in a position to wait, but sounds like a lot of people won't wait and Jeep will lose some sales.

The other thing my dealer told me they heard at their Chrysler Production team meeting this morning (besides the ordering delay), is that the diesel will be a short run. Not sure what that means, but I will try to keep the emotions checked and wait patiently to get my CRD order in at the first opportunity.

#4,925 ·
My dealer and the dealer rep told me the same thing today. Basically, the short run means they will build a few CRD's they way they want and send them out. The dealer rep also stated that they hope to take orders a bit sooner than 5/4 but it wasn't for certain. He also added that the first run would be just consumer orders (orders tied to real names).

When I asked why the delay, he stated that they did not get the allocation of engines they were initially hoping for and that demand may be greater than originally expected, so they had to balance the two issues.

#4,881 ·
I wonder if "short run" means that they're going to build a few to fill lots, then switch to other models for a while (and come back to CRD later) or if they're gonna make changes to the model such that the CRD that gets produced in June/July 2013 will be a different design (mechanically) than the CRD that gets produced in January 2014 (for example). I don't want to buy a car they're producing just to save face but they know needs to be re-designed.

Can anyone from the factory shed light on what a "short run" would mean?

#4,882 · (Edited)
Yea 'short run' kind of scares me too. An exec was was quoted last week in press saying something about expecting more orders then they first thought  They are starting to sound like they don't have too good plan here. Strange considering they have been building CRD for export for 2 years, correct?

I'm fine waiting another month if it's just bringing in the ordering time to be closer to the production start in mid-May. If that's the case it's still a July delivery time frame.

#4,885 · (Edited)
I'm hoping short run just means that a small percent of the production each month will be CRDs as they expect most of sales to still be gas engines.

#4,886 ·
The dealer I spoke with today said that unlike the gas models, most if not all of the CRD productions will be to fulfill pre-arranged sales orders (the orders we're trying to place). He said there won't be many diesels produced to sit on the dealer lots. I don't know if that's what they mean by "short run," but sounds similar?

#4,890 ·
I'm still trying to make sense of this article.

What this Jeep CEO says, is not jiving with reality (like... at all).

Even the exports won't be on the lots in "a few weeks". They maybe ready to ship, but there's no way in hell they can get them on the lots, prepped and ready to go in that time frame.

That being said, I did reach out to the Detroit News and ask them to follow up on the article.

The writer responded that he'll make it a point to ask for clarification from Mr. Manley on how he came up with those figures and dates...

I have to think he didn't have the most up to date info when he gave that quote. There was probably an e-mail sitting in his inbox he still hadn't quite gotten around to reading yet. I imagine Mr. Manley's a pretty busy guy. After all, it takes a lot of time and effort to usher the new Cherokee to market ;)

#4,894 ·
Good points Chevyboy_711. Delays could be just milking the buzz to sell more of what they have on hand. I guess from customer prospective the shifting dates comes off as confusion so who knows. If in the end if they start up the CRD in mid-May without further delays it will all be forgotten.

#4,897 · (Edited)
But see, that's where your 'short run' talk comes in. You guys may not fully get the wording, but look at it like the SRT. There aren't any stock orders for SRTs. They're limited production because every one that's built is accounted for. And dealers only order/BUY what they know they can sell. If the CRDs sell at least as good as the SRTs, they we'll continue to build em, if not then they'll can it. Again. Either that, or they'll just continue to use it for the marketing associated with its fuel mileage. :)

But you can see by the price point that its not intended to be a high volume car. Rather just an ace-in-the-hole for marketing! ;)

#4,896 ·
It is not the delays that bother me but the fact that there are no firm dates, and that dealers are not even willing to take an order. Whatever the reason for later availabilty. Just give us a date. I would have easily agreed with a dealer for $ or % amount of invoice, take my deposit, and let it be done. However, my experience has been of dealers telling me they are not willing to accept an order until Chrysler allows them to order.

#4,900 ·
How can a dealer take an order on something they can even order yet? What would you do if they did the same thing Chevrolet is doing with the Corvette where only fee twin dealers are getting them right away? My guess you would be even more pissed about this. They do to want to deal with angry customers and all the calls about the crd.

#4,906 ·
Good info and insight Chevy. I wonder could it also be due to the backlog of orders already. You guys are running non-stop producing orders for customers and dealers for V6 and HEMIs. Why would they introduce another option to take capacity away from a backlog of orders to make it a larger backlog with another engine? Business wise it makes sense to continue to not introduce another option yet. When it starts to slow and then you introduce the CRD you get the bump in more sales and have a full backlog again with customers pulled back in to dealers. It is a brilliant plan if you think about it. When I bought my last jeep I don't think JG existed just like a majority of Jeep buyers today will never visit JG. The dealer will say CRD is coming out later this year and they don't know it was tentative for orders many times and delayed. When it comes out in the summer it will be in the ballpark of what the dealer told them and 99.99% of the customers will be happy and have no idea. We have so much more information and knowledge than the average customer and even dealers it is scary. It is almost like we work for Jeep. I think Jeep should just comp us a free GC as ambassadors for the brand! ;). I also think if you are on the site and haven't purchased a membership you should think about all of the information and help you receive compared to an average customer. Thanks to Milous, Chevy, Scott and others we are practically on the inside everyday.

#4,908 ·
The dealer I'm working with has agreed to 3% under invoice on any trim/build and will order the CRD... once they can...

#4,910 · (Edited)
Chevy -- I appreciate your comments, but honestly, I don't get it. Sure I understand the CRD is probably more of a marketing ploy than anything, but what is the benefit of saying something is going to be available and then just pushing it back a month at a time? What additional customers does that attract? If anything, it makes those who were debating HEMI/CRD to wait to order until the next month if they want the CRD. They would be better off saying the CRD won't be available until late summer. Then those debating will just say I can't wait, and order the HEMI.

The only thing this delay is doing is pissing off those of us who have been waiting around paitently to give Jeep $50,000 and order a CRD. Yeah I get it, there isn't much of us, but why not take our orders and make us happy? They are taking SRT orders aren't they? They don't have to make dealers put several CRD on their lots, but what would it hurt to take custom orders?

Only thing I can think is that the HEMI/Pentastar has a much higher profit margin than the CRD. But that still doesn't explain why they keep delaying a month at a time. They can achieve the same marketing ploy by just saying its not available until later summer. Doesn't stop them from advertising the 30+ mpg now.

Chevy -- I appreciate your comments, but honestly, I don't get it.
If you think about it this way:

When you are looking for a new car and you see "30MPG on a full sized SUV!" and you have, say, a Tahoe in your garage and it's drinking your wallet dry, that advert will grab your attention.

You head down to the dealer, and depending on the dealer, they give you a line about the CRD not being on the lot yet for one reason or another. But hey, while you are here, check out this V6.

Sure, it's not 30MPG, but, it's also a boatload less to buy and still comes with a pretty respectable MPG rating.

We can make you a hell of a deal if you are interested.

The CRD and the 30MPG thing is no more than a ploy, like when you look at a car ad and see a screaming deal on a car. If you look closely, it will have an * next to it.

That little * will say "Includes all incentives, rebates, customer cash allowances, not all of these may apply at time of purchase" or something otherwise irritating.

It's all a ploy to get you in the showroom. If they can get you there, they have a shot at getting you in a car (any car) and that much closer to closing the deal.

Sure... the $5,000 in rebates won't apply to you because you are not a Disabled Civil War Veteran in your 3rd year of college Biology class as a minority student driving a competitors car. But, they can work a deal with you (after 6 hours of annoying the crap out of you).

Seriously, this is nothing more than forcing you to sit at that car sales desk while the dealer goes back to "talk to his manager".

Only once enough of us get up to leave the car sales desk will they come through with an "offer". That means sales will have to fall off before they will be willing to deal.

I honestly, think that the first dealer I talked to, that said, "Oct of this year" is more and more spot on.

My only hope is that auto magazines and such catch wind of this bate and switch scheme and burn Jeep to the ground over it forcing them to act.

I'm willing to wait a while longer for the CRD, but if Jeep is playing games, they risk losing my (insignificant) business. Now my dealer is telling me they don't know if Jeep/Chrysler will honor my Affiliate Reward pricing (1% below invoice) on the CRD. If that is the case when/if the CRD is available to order, I will go elsewhere. The premium on the CRD is just too high for me without the special pricing, and I do want a diesel.

I contacted the CA program people and specifically asked them the question if it applies to the CRD and the answer came back yes it does apply. That can of course change as we get into the launch and 'games' start to be played.

This is my next big fear, dealers will get cute and start to play games on the CRD pricing. Oh it's a low production run, look it's the hot new thing, we can charge an extra dealer markup, we won't take the affiliate pricing etc. In the end dealers can charge whatever they feel they can get for the product and Jeep has little to no say in it.

I agree with you vtail, I'm already over my price limit on the CRD and totally need the affiliate deal to stay in the game. Anything that changes that equation will force me to switch away from CRD. You should look into another dealer vtail. Your dealer may already be ahead in the game playing department.

so affiliate reward pricing isnt going to apply to CRD rigs!? what the hell??

agreed... the wife and i have been patiently waiting on trading in our '12 hemi on a '14 CRD, but the ordering snafu and now no affiliate rewards pricing... chrysler is about to lose a customer in us and we will probably just go with a full size truck. the CRD is perfect for us... good fuel economy and great towing (we pull 7k+ from time to time) but a full size truck will do close to what the CRD is advertising and i can easily get my hands on one.

Punted CRD today! Just placed order for 2014 Overland, Cashmere, Indigo Blue/Brown, Off-Road Adventure II. Were at dealership as the sales manager got word of diesel delays on conference call. His best guess would be not getting a diesel until at least August. And by then, our trade would have loss value. Went out and drove VW Touareg TDI, but in the end returned to Jeep. Moved upscale from Limited to Overland for nicer interior. Now just a routine wait for a new build.....
