Probably this has been discussed somewhere here (forgive me, this site is huge and overwhelming for us new guys) but, based on a $4500 up charge for the diesel, at what point does it pay for itself over the V6 ?

It's got to be over 100K miles I would think.

If that's true, then ordering the diesel has to be for reasons other than mpg - right?

Am I missing something ?

It's got to be over 100K miles I would think.
That depends how you define "pay for itself'. Economically, it's going to take a very, very long time to break even. However, you have to keep in mind that the performance of the CRD is in a different league.

So if it takes 100K miles - keep in mind how your driving experience of these exact same 100K miles would have been different.

Compared to the V6, I'd say the additional charge for the CRD is a performance upcharge - like it is for the HEMI.

While that's true, there is something else to consider. Just like most folks will never take their Jeep off road, most people will never trailer anything. Most who do trailer will not come near the capacity. For that rare time you pull a heavy load, the V6 will do fine, within its range.

My V8 will get away from the light a lot quicker than the V6. But the way I (and most) usually drive it won't make a bit of difference to me or the person in the lane next to me.

My advice is to buy what you want. There is no need to rationalize to yourself or anybody else.

IMO, too many variable to strictly base a 'break even point' off of mileage only.

-The performance of the CRD is more on par with the HEMI rather than the V6
-Real world mileage is probably closer to sticker for the CRD than either gas engine. Strictly my opinion on this.
-If you tow a lot, there are huge benefits to the diesel
-The CRD is generally viewed as more fun to drive (you would have to put a value on this yourself)
-Diesels generally hold their value better than gas due to longevity of a well-maintained engine
-Gas engines are going to be cheaper to service than the diesel
-CRD has by far the most range due to the MPG benefit


At the end of the day, it's just a personal decision based on your needs (as well as your wants). Are you willing to pay more for an engine that hauls better, is more fun to drive with the loads of torque, and has a 600+ mile range between fill ups?

Or, are you more concerned with making up the initial price difference vs. a V6 (will take 5+ years) or the V8 (not as long to make up the difference)?

Let me add that when the upcharge for the CRD is compared to the price of the HEMI, many buyers won't be dealing with a timeframe to make up the difference in the first place.

When leasing or financing, your total monthly out of pocket expenses for the CRD are likely to be less than those for the HEMI.

In other words, the CRD is going to save $$ from day 1 when you lease or finance (fuel savings greater than monthly premium for CRD).:thumbsup:

Jeez fellas, I take a few hours off and now we're waiting until May to order the CRD!! Hope VM Motori in Italy isn't messing up this build, who knows, maybe Milous and the gang will know more...I see the "why get a diesel" question has popped up again, though, that's good for 20-30 posts.

Don't forget the discount you get with LuxII with the CRD at invoice....and my 03 Cummins will last another few months....and it's got 203K on it....yeah, them diesels last if ya take care of 'em....

Evidently, there are many valid reasons for ordering a diesel that more than compensate for the $4500 premium.

Regarding colors:

My hobby is looking at new cars. I'm always amazed at the % of new cars in dealers lots that have light colored interiors - either cloth or leather. On a given dealer lot, there seem to be at least 4X as many light vs dark interiors.

I'm an all black (leather) guy or, in the case of the 14 JGC Summit, dark chocolate. The light interior colors bore me silly. I love light colored exteriors but those invariably sport light interiors. Usually, the only dark interiors you can get are on Black vehicles.

But, I gotta think I'm the exception. The dealers are carrying what most people want I would think. But I don't get it.

Where are you located? That's odd, I always thought the opposite (most the interiors were darker). We stock mainly darker interiors here, and most of our colors are the 'safe' colors (black, silver, white, gray, and a salt and pepper of red/blue vehicles). Usually Dealers try to stock what they can easily sell in their area.

Do you guys know if you can get Indigo with Granite. I believe you cannot. I have Black/Indigo on order but I like Granite more and more ... It looks like MG on previous MY but a little bit darker.

Don't feel bad, I ordered my 2014 Jeep GC Overland on 2/11/13 and then on 2/18/13 I got the first email which said "Production Scheduled". Then a week later I got another email that said the same thing. Then on 3/3/13 I got an email that said "your vehicle is being shipped". I never got an email regarding the other phases of production.

Guys,

was today at the Geneva Salon.

They got a Black and a GRANITE Summit. I can you confirm, that the lower part is in fact in Granite too (see pic)..

The Summit locks in person much better than on the pictures!

Hope to help you with this information.

Brw. interesting is, here in Switzerland they talk about 250 PS and 570 Nm of torque.

The price of the car with full option is around CHF 80'000.00.
