2014 Grand Cherokee Summit Towing ?'s

Hello all -

I've never towed anything in my life. I need some pointers as well as questions answered here. Thanks for your help! I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit for reference...

1) I can't get the hitch cover off. I found the the 2 screws/nobs on the underside. I unscrew them and they pop out (they are spring loaded), but I can't pop the stupid thing off when I pull. Am I missing another latching mechanism somewhere? What is the process to remove this thing? I find nothing in the owners manual.

2). I'm towing a motorcycle trailer I'm renting from uhaul. What else do I need to buy besides what comes stock on the summit?

3). Anything else I need to know? Any pearls would be helpful.

Thanks!

Re: Hitch Cover- I think that there were a few posts in the Exterior/ Interior/ Visual thread that had some photos or diagrams that showed the cover being removed by pulling outward and downward at a 45 deg. angle. There are some "push in" clips that hold it on in addition to the screw knobs.

Thanks for the reply. Where are these additional clips? I looked 15 pages deep into that thread and couldn't find the thread you mention.

If anyone else has answers to my three questions I will be grateful. Thanks.

Re: Hitch Cover- I googled Summit Hitch Cover and found 2 threads listed in Jeep Garage that discussed the cover, but no pictures or diagrams, and nothing in the Interior/ Exterior thread. I guess I have a Swiss Cheese brain. There are 4 pin style clips along the top edge holding the cover which need a good tug outward and downward @ 45* to remove.

Before you pull out of Uhaul, make sure they show you correct hitch, hitch pin, safety chains, and either 4 pin or 7 pin wire connection to your rear bumper. Believe it or not, many have watched their trailer unhitch from the vehicle at highway speeds, a solid hitch connection is critical.

Also make sure your bike is tied down and laterally in a proper manner so it neither will launch from the trailer, or tilt over at speed.

Other suggestion is to practice in a wide open lot, both turning and perhaps reversing the trailer.

Otherwise, the WK2 is a tremendous tow vehicle, enjoy.

Ok, I can't find anything on how to get the hitch cover off on the 2014 summit. I undo the two spring loaded screws and pull out at a 45 degree angle and down with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions here? Help!

The top of the cover is held in place with tabs across the top of the cover. Once you have the bottom undone angle it out slightly and pull down. It is a very tight fit but it will let go without damage. It is very well done - better than my range rover. I have done it 2-3 times at the dealerahip to measure the height of the receiver.

A while ago I watched a tech at the dealership show a customer how to remove the cover. All I really remember is that the cover did come off, but it also hit the tech in the face. He wasn't very happy about that. But it does come off.

You have to pull it hard and firmly at 45 degree angle. The first time you do it it is tight and a little hard just pull it hard it will come out. It loosens and is easier to do after the first time. Don't bend it up to far and don't pull strait down, use 45 degree angle with some force.
