2014 Grand Cherokee Using oil ?

Hi Everyone,

Just did my second oil change at 8800 miles. First one done at 1000 miles.
Well, when I drained the old out and poured it into a 5 quart container, to my surprise there was only 3 quarts I know I put 6 quarts in the 3.6 liter Pentastar engine when I did the 1st oil change, where did the other 3 quarts go. No leaks that I can see. Can't believe it burned it all in a brand new vehicle.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal for this vehicle. I never lost any oil in my 2002 ford explorer even at 112,000 miles.

This is kinda worry some

Thanks
Alan

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Using oil ?

You should not change the first oil that soon.
It's asking for trouble.

Some companies put special additives in the first oil for break in.

Mine was unmeasurable on dip stick at 7500 mile intervals.

It may fix itself.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Using oil ?

I had to add 1.5 quarts of oil to my 5.7L V8 yesterday after 5,000 miles and I put in 7.5 quarts 5000 miles ago. So 9 quarts in 5000 miles for an engine that calls for 7 quarts (different than the V6 of course). And it now sits only 1/3rd of the way above the add line into the cross hatches when reading the oil on the dipstick, so I could probably add quite a bit more oil to it even.

Honda did this on our former 2007 Accord and stated in the manual not to change the oil too early. Chrysler, however, does not specify a mandatory minimum break in mileage on the factory fill. It's simply up to the owner to change it when they feel it's necessary. I've switched to full synthetic after the first 1000 miles on all my vehicles for years with no issues.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Using oil ?

It's normal for the JGC engines, especially the Hemi, to use some oil. The factory spec is 1 quart in about 4k miles if I remember the bulletin correctly. My MY12 has an interval of 8K miles between changes...and I always check at about 4K miles to see if it needs a little "booster".

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Using oil ?

I really hope this isnt the case. I just finally got rid of my '08 honda that was burning a qt every 1k miles. I dont mind it burning a slight bit over the course of each oil change, but if i need to be dumping oil into the motor before every oil change i am going to be an unhappy camper...

No special additives for break in... haven't been used for decades.
It hurts nothing other than a pocketbook to change early.
It isn't asking for trouble.

And no, it should not be consuming that much oil... but is it really using that much oil if you just check the dipstick before changing?

For dino oil, most dealers offer prices hard to beat even at a quickie oil change in the express lanes.

Every time I see a post on any Car forum that complains about Excessive Consumption. It so happens they changed the factory oil excessively early.

Even if they don't put anything. The micro metals in the first oil help things seat properly. A little micro abrasion is GOOD for break-in.

Even on my stupid snow blower. They said DO NOT PUT Synthetic until after one season.

One suggestion to OP. Try a different oil.

I highly, highly recommend Castrol. It has solved problems on very high mileage vehicles that Mobile 1 could not.

Also consider trying a High Mileage Oil if all else fails. It does work. It should not be needed this young of course. But it's better than losing that much oil.

I have a '11 WK2 Hemi. I changed oil at 1,000 miles and at recommended intervals since. Never had to add top up oil in 8 oil changes. I use Motorcraft synthetic blend with Motorcraft filter, do it myself.

How many miles per interval?

Every time I wash and wax my Jeep it rains or snows.
Suspect that has a much higher cause and effect ratio than people ratchet jawing on car forums...
