2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

Comparing the Limited models with rear wheel drive and the V8, the Grand Cherokee is only 279 pounds less than Durango.

If I get a Durango, I'd remove the third row and install the police package under floor storage compartment and cover, so that would save some weight.

I know invoice on the Grand Cherokee Limited would be $38,458 : $34,267 base price, delivery $995, V8 $2,399, Nav. $708, cargo cover $89. The Durango prices are not out yet (today is August 9, 2013), so that comparison has to wait.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

What do you want the vehicle for? The JGC and Durango attend to slightly different markets.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

The only reason I would buy a Durango is the third row. Otherwise the Jeep is a much more attractive package IMHO, better styling, better interior, better brand, and my guess is better resale. Theres always a market for a Jeep, but there are rumblings about the Durango being discontinued...

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

I need it as a work (environmental consulting) vehicle, and have tools and test equipment, including a 17' Little Giant ladder which is 55" collapsed to carry. I'm usually carrying test equipment worth more than the new price of the vehicle. I carry back seat (2nd row) passengers once or twice a year. I also collect and restore old radios, and like the 1930s console (floor standing) radios.

It is too bad that Jeep does not offer the captain's chairs in the second row. Buying them as new parts would be insanely expensive, so the only practical way would be to buy them from a junkyard out of a wrecked Durango.

Having part of the second row folded in the Grand Cherokee would be a problem with things sliding about, but it would be easier to park a Grand Cherokee than the 11.4" longer Durango.

The other vehicle on my list is the 2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited, the same length as the Grand Cherokee, but with a primitive solid rear axle.

Kinda.

As Stephen points out, if you drop that backrow down you have a HUGE amount of storage (way more than in the Grand Cherokee).

We opted for "both", but I don't think a lot of folks go that route. That said, my only big worry on the Durango is the resale. If they kill that line (and right now, all signs point to yes), the resale on that guy is going to tank hard.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

The other possibility is that they copy Toyota and just keep making the same basic vehicle for many more years. Many of us do not want and will not buy front wheel drive CUVs, nor will we spend what Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Porsche want for their SUVs. The Grand Cherokee, Durango, and 4Runner are the only SUVs (vs CUVs) left which are not in the high-priced category.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

I was just in that same scenario within the last week or so. I was undecided between the Durango R/T and the GC… At the time looking at 2013s to get the rebates etc…..I got a great looking 2013 Durango R/T, sunroof, dark grey, sunroof… I fell in love with it with the roar of the Hemi (what I was looking for , the V8), I loved it while I was driving it, but once I got out and looked at it I started not liking it; Looks like a mini van from the back, you could argue it looks almost like a mini van on the side, third row seat made it feel more like a mini van and marketed for those that need a mini van and don’t want to drive a “mini van”…etc…. the more I read online, the more I see it comments about it being a cross over vs. an suv, how the target market wasn’t my use (i.e., kids, etc.. lol)… Then I go online and find hardly no “following” for them, not really an enthusiast vehicle, no after market, blah, blah, blah, lolfficeffice" /><O></O>
<O></O>
I went back to the dealer on Friday and explained the issue. I took a small hit in the pocket, but drove out with a 2014 GC Limited, Hemi, sunroof, etc… I love it, glad I got it, sooooooo much different , yet pretty much the same vehicle, lol.. THE GC’s look is fantastic, the Hemi is great, and it doesn’t quite sound like a V6, lol…<O></O>
<O></O>
As for depreciation? Well, you do get a load of incentives on the left over 2013s, but probably on the GC as well. <O></O>
<O></O>
In summary, get the GC, lol<O></O>

BTW, first post, so hello to all

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

You sound just like me. I tried talking my wife into a Durango at first because of the 3rd row and how similar it was to the GC. I always loved the looks of the GC and fell in love with the WK2 when they first came out. We kept going back and forth between a Durango and a Yukon. Since our plan is just for 2 kids, a Yukon was too much car. I then shifted her focus to the GC, but had to convince her 2 rows was enough. She finally caved and loves the GC and feels it's enough room, but now she's hinting at a 3rd child and likes the Durango but I tell her it's too late since she soured me on the looks.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee vs Durango

My daughter is a road warrior, and has rented both JGCs and Durangos. She says she didn't find the Durango any harder to park than the JGC.. but then again her car at home is a Focus, so both may have 'impossible'

Lots of interior changes in the '14 Durango, which goes into volume production this week IIRC.
