That's a losing comparison for the Jeep for most buyers. The Toyota will have WAY better fuel economy, more room, more historically reliable, better resale values, and of course 3 rows of seats.

People who are interested in GC's offroading won't look at Highlander because it's not capable offroad - it's an on road crossover family hauler type vehicle. But the average buyer also will like the benefits of the Highlander more over the offroad ability of the Jeep. The best thing the Jeep has going for it is the luxuries on the Overland and Summit models that Highlander doesn't offer (but that could be had on RX350... which opens up a whole other can of worms).

Highlander will probably be a strong seller, and give Explorer some real competition in its class. Pilot is due for a redesign soon too, should be interesting to see that one as well.

Chrysler really needs something better in this segment. Journey is nice, but a little cramped and lacking in features. Durango is nice, but a bit heavy and too focused on things not important to most shoppers in this segment. Chrysler really needs a modern version of the Pacifica to bridge the gap, a vehicle that is a FWD/AWD crossover, 3 rows or mostly roomy seats, upscale interior and features, capable of family trips, and maybe improve its image to be little more rugged looking (like Highlander or Pilot - they may not be capable offroad machines, but they don't look totally sissy and wouldn't look odd if they had some kayaks or skis on the roof racks).

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

The Highlander will be a very strong seller. To me the edge the Jeep has is that it has a solidity and premium quality to it that the Highlander never had (don't know about this new one). To me the biggest drawback of the Highlander was the terrible interior materials (the headliner felt just like one of those cardboard drink trays you get from Mcdonalds)...but I know Toyota is trying to do better in this regard.

I do really think Jeep needs a 3 row vehicle.

Isn't Chrysler suppose to be getting a "Pacifica" type SUV.. isn't that in Sergio's plan?

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

As a current Highlander owner who is thinking about a new JGC along with some other vehicles here are my thoughts -

The 2014 Highlander grew a bit larger, new tech and materials inside, exterior design that from some angles looks nice but others reminds me of a minivan, ditched the 50/50 AWD for an on demand system that during normal driving will be 100% FWD unless the computers detect a reason to send power the rear wheels. Overall for someone shopping for an SUV/CUV that seats 5 or more and doesn't off road it's in the mix. Having said that I am not interested in it at all once I read the AWD went to on demand instead of full time split. I don't off road but live in a snowy area and find my current Highlander handles the conditions great but having driven three different on demand vehicles for AWD at various times they don't compare in the snow.

The 4runner is a nice vehicle but the JGC just seems a cut above in looks, materials, features. The one thing i'd like to see Jeep do better is quality.

What is your opinion on the uncomfortable 2nd row (middle stowaway) seat on the Highlander? I find the 3rd row is practically useless that it'd always be folded down to have any storage space. These are the main reasons I am not even considering the Highlander and pretty much going to get a JGC at the end of the summer

We considered the Highlander but found that comfort-wise, it is a 4-passenger CUV which is why my wife ended up with a Subaru Outback.

I never sit back there and in fact have the cupholder/tray in place so have captain chairs in effect. I think it is a bit small and just a bench the folds 40/20/40 would of been better. Third row I never use would prefer cargo space but it is small. I have heard specualtion the 2014 Highlander is going to either come with a true rear bench or captains chairs but not both.

When I looked over a 2013 JGC one thing that I remember was the interior felt smaller and more cramped compared to my Highlander which surprised me given that both vehicles are about the same size exterior wise. Now for appearance and material feel the JGC interior was ahead of the Highlander.

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

The third row in my previous ride...a 2006 Highlander Hybrid Limited...was fine for small kids to Tweens, but not really appropriate for adult-sized people, regardless of age. I'd be very surprised if it's changed very much, if at all, in current versions. Third row seats in mid-sized SUVs just don't have a lot of space to operate in.

I looked at an Infiniti JX35 and as a 6 foot tall 200lb man I can get back there and sit comfortably given the wide range of adjustments to the middle row. The Pathfinder is the same vehicle.

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

On-Demand AWD isn't that bad nowdays. Modern systems can react in fractions of a second, and can predict traction issues before they arise. For example, a lot of them will pre-emptively turn on the AWD if an increase in throttle or steering input are detected, so as to avoid any possibility of a low traction situation arising. Some vehicles will even give you the option of locking it into awd for snow/bad weather.

I had part time AWD on my last vehicle, and frankly it performed well. It never saw snow, but did see LOTS of deep water, and never had issues there. It didn't even have predictive AWD like newer vehicles have and the AWD would kick on in under half a second - barely perceptible when driving really.

Jeep does need the Grand Wagoneer desperately. But if delaying its launch means it isn't designed by the same moron that did the 2014 Cherokee, then they made the right choice.

Re: 2014 Highlander vs JGC

My wife has the 2011 Highlander; I should get my '14 Lux II JGC in a week or so (on the train now). I was on the way to buy a 4 runner when I happened across the JGC, was sold on the first drive and found the 4 runner to be dated.

I think everyone's assessment that they are in two different classes is correct. Hauling a family of 5 with the Highlander is great; plenty capable from the culdesac up the hill to the ski lodge but on the smaller size which is a nice transition down from a minivan. I would never take it offroad, but looking forward to having a vehicle with that capability soon.

My favorite comment about the '14 Highlander is that the new rear end suffers from "minivan muffin-top" My wife concurs, it's too minivan
