2014 JGC radio reception

Anyone else experience bad fringe area AM radio reception on their 2014 with the shark fin? I've had this problem since new and now I have 5000 miles on it. I've had the dealer apply all updates, but I still have bad AM reception compared to my 2005 JGC I traded in. Whenever I drive to fringe areas, I experience a signal fade and then it returns to normal, plus it sounds like the sound of distant thunderstorms. Same locations I drove my 2005 with the factory radio, reception was crystal clear... no fade, no volume changes, etc. I thought it might be a bad ground, but the tech said he could not find a problem. I informed him that he would not, because the dealership was in a local area and not in a fringe area. FM reception isn't that great in the fringe areas (fading) compared to the 2005. Sirius seems to be ok, haven't had a problem. Anyone else experience this? I am thinking of asking for a new radio since I can't use it with passengers complaining about the reception. My only concern is, it will be a refurb and might be worse than what I have now.

Re: 2014 JGC radio reception

I think you are looking at the wrong item. The problem is not the radio but the Shark Fin antenna. My 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited ADII with 8.4AN and upgraded speaker/amp/subwoofer system came with the 10 inch or so rubber antenna. I was thinking of upgrading this antenna strictly for assetic reasons so I sent an email to Visual Garage about purchasing a Shark Fin. They emailed back and told me they would be more than happy to sell me one but I should be aware that the Shark Fin performs best with SiriusXM, does fair with FM, and does not do well at all with AM. I figured if they were honest enough to tell that to a potential customer I would take them at their word and did not purchase one. What they said is what I think you are experiencing. The antenna coax should be easy to get at in the base of the Shark Fin. You might try temporarily hooking up a rubber stick antenna and see what happens. I would bet your reception would improve.

Thanks for this reply. I have experienced this exact problem on our 2014 Summit & your antenna answer sounds legit.

I don't have much AM reception anyway so I guess my order of choice would be SIRIUS, FM and them AM ... and that's evidently what we have.

Thanks again

That does appear to be the case. I'm not very happy with that as the FM/HD sounds a whole lot better than the Sirius/XM.

Thanks for your reply Macfan.... curious as to your radio reception with the rubber antenna. Maybe I should have the dealer remove the fin and install the rubber one.

I have never had a problem with the rubber stick antenna. It even works fine inside my condo/townhouse garage most of the time. Obviously, dense cloud cover effects satellite radio/SiriusXM reception just as dense cloud cover effects my satellite TV/Directv reception. Also, going under wide bridges may disrupt the satellite signal or AM signal for a second or two. Then again southeastern/mid Michigan is a heavily populated area so I am sure there are some signal repeaters around even in the open areas. Since I don't drive in your area there is no way to know for sure how a rubber stick antenna would work for you unless you try one for yourself. There are lots of little things that can influence your antenna's reception too like airports, police/fire communications, and military installations (The Detroit area is considered a foreign military target because of the auto industry and the Soo Locks in the UP are considered vital to shipping. Because of that we have a few underground missile installations around.). I am roughly 70 miles from Detroit and pick up AM stations out of Detroit without a problem.

Re: 2014 JGC radio reception

My '14 WK2 seems about the same on AM as my '07 WK - but pretty much the only thing I ever use it for is traffic reports.. which gives me a pretty consistent set of test cases:
- WBZ Boston every week on my commute from western to eastern mass
- NYC traffic stations when I drive to NJ/PA/VA

AM HD radio seems to be much worse than non-HD for me, though.. and I live in a pretty hilly part of the country, so AM propagation issues may be different than where you live.. YMMV..
