2014 Limited - 1 year/31,000 mile review

I would like to share my experience and thoughts with owning and driving a 2014 Limited for the past year and 31,000 miles.

Background:
I live in Central IL and travel about 30-40,000 miles/year. Work takes me mainly throughout the Midwest for about 20,000 miles/year and the balance is personal miles.

Previous Ride:
I traded a 2011 BMW 328 X-Drive for the Jeep. I had the BMW for about 18 months and 55,000 miles. Great driving car, but not as practical for my needs. I was tired of driving an hour to the dealer for maintenance and low-profile tires don't work well with the roads in the rustbelt, bent rims are no fun.

Why a Grand Cherokee:
I had always liked the Grand Cherokee. All weather capability, tires with a sidewall, local dealer, perfect size for my needs. I researched on this site for days and ultimately decided I wanted a Ecodiesel. The local dealer found one for me, but the price ultimately was out of the range I was comfortable with. I decided to go with a 3.6 Limited with Nav and Sunroof as the only options.

What I like:
I have found the vehicle to be very comfortable over the last year. My work takes me on 500-600 mile days about 2-3 times month. The GC is great for soaking up miles on the interstate. I love the sound system and XM/Sirius radio. The seat fits me well and is comfy. I like the heated steering wheel (was great during the Polar Vortex last winter). The remote start worked well and I had no problems through last winter when the morning temps were at -15F. The size is great for driving and parking in the city. At my work I park in a garage and I have no trouble fitting into most spaces, unlike some of my colleagues who drive full-size trucks. Mileage over 31,000 miles has been right at 20.8 mpg hand calculated with about 75% highway driving, which I am pleased with. Also, I had no issues last winter getting through all the snow. At times I would switch from Auto to Snow Mode, but I'm not sure it was necessary. I have the 18" wheels/tires and I have about half the tread left. The tires have been okay, I'll replace with something different when the time comes though, something that do a bit better in snow and offroad. I also really like the sport mode for driving in traffic. It holds the gears longer and I feel like I don't have to ride the brake as much

What I don't like:
These are minor and are personal preferences, not likely to be shared by the majority, but I will share nonetheless. I wish the steering wheel was a wee-bit thinner, not as fat. When my Uconnect screen shows the phone is connected right after starting up the vehicle, it really isn't. I have had more than one phone call start by me dialing, the person answering on the other end and waiting for the audio to switch through the vehicle. Now I just wait a good minute or two after startup to place a call. I wish there were actual buttons to activate the heated seats. Sometimes when taking off from a stop, I get a hesitation that can be downright scary at times. It seems to only occur when I momentarily hit the gas, let off (like I am checking one last time before pulling out into traffic), and then get back on the gas. When I do this, sometimes the vehicle doesn't respond and it feels like there is no power for about 1/2 a second. I know 1/2 a second isn't a long time, but if there is oncoming traffic, it is plenty long to be noticeable.

The accident:
Last June I hit a small deer, probably about 100 lbs, doing 75 down the interstate with the cruise on. I didn't hit the brakes at all. It jumped over a barrier and bam, I hit it with the front passenger headlight. The side curtain airbag and seat airbag went off, scaring the bejeezus out of my passenger. The engine shut down and I steered off the road. I had lost coolant, so it needed to be towed away. The only visible body damage was the front grill/headlight area and the front passenger side fender. All-in-all, $12,XXX worth of damage. Did you know you have to replace the entire seat belt and latch when the airbag goes off? Did you know that when the airbag deployed from the passenger seat, I had to get a whole new seat? Lot's of little stuff like that added up. Body shop did great and the Jeep was back in action after about 4 weeks.

What I'd do different:
If I needed a new vehicle tomorrow, I'd get another Jeep GC. I still enjoy driving it and look forward to spending time in the vehicle. I am happy I got the 2014 Limited as it has the upgraded stereo and dual exhaust. I could care less about the leather and would likely be fine with the cloth of the Laredo, but the rear heated seats are nice in the Limited. If I were getting another tomorrow, I'd order one with the upgraded stereo, but to be fair, I've never heard the base stereo, it may be just fine. I'd get the Nav again as it is useful for my work. I'd also option up some tow hooks of some kind as well. After last winter, I had some close calls with ending up in a ditch and if I had ended up there, I'm not real sure where I'd hook onto if I needed a tug to get out on my current ride. I would also look at the V8 (easy to say with gas prices at $2.24 locally this morning, maybe not when they are at $4.00). I have been completely satisfied with the 3.6, it has great power when I stand on it or put it into sport mode and cruises the flat Midwest like a champ. I would like to drive the diesel, but there is over a $1.00 difference here between gas and diesel, so I'm not sure that the economics would support it, though I do love the idea of driving a diesel and getting that great mileage.

All in all, it's been a great year with the GC and I am happy I purchased it. Thanks for letting me share.

Thank you for sharing.....It's good to hear you're still happy with your GC even after having some repairs made.
Honestly I feel the same way about my Jeep after three years of ownership.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As someone who is in the market to purchase a new SUV and has the GC on their short list, this was very helpful. Happy to see you'd purchase another one if you were in the market. That says a lot.

I hear you about the engine hesitation. I mostly notices it when the engine is cold and in eco mode. The heated steering wheel is nice and gets pretty warm. My only wish is the seats got warmer than they do. But I am a bit spoiled because the seats in my car get really warm, like make you sweat on setting number 3. The GC's high setting is equivalent to the low setting in my G8 which I usually use the 2 setting.

Roadwise, I agree with you. I have taken mine on 2 trips from the DC area since buying in July and I don't feel tired after 400-500 miles. Did a trip up to Vermont in July and a trip last month up to Toronto right before the snow dumping on the southern Buffalo area. Truck did amazingly well and did really well over the beat up roads in VT with the air suspension, in spite of 20" wheels.

Re: 2014 Limited - 1 year/31,000 mile review

Nice review! I'm on my 3rd GC and have been very satisfied. The only thing I would have probably done differently was to take the 18" wheel on my 2014 Limited. The dealer had the car I wanted and it came in with the 20", anyway I'm looking at gettting a second set of rims/tires anyway so I'll have both. I do have a love/hate relationship with the 20s for the reasons you mentioned. I already scroffed up one rim pretty bad because of the limited protection from the tires.

My only real gripe with my car is the audio/visual/GPS. On my last two GCs 2011 and my current 2014 the system I feel lacks behind the Package Jeep has created. This weeks adventure was trying to voice navigate to LaGuardia Airport from Long Island. Living in NY this is a pretty popular destination. I tried three times through the sytem in general and then through the Yelp app and it just couldn't do it. It did eventually find a Marriott Hotel near the Airport, but come on, really!
