Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I watched the whole video. In my opinion Jeep got screwed on this one. They beat out all those SUV's and then in the end lose to the Forester? What a joke... Then they had that one clown that said it drove like a 15 or 20 year old vehicle. Tell me there wasn't a little bias there. I don't think he was going to like it no matter how it drove. Oh well second place.

It seems like they glossed over all of the JGC's top features. Diesel, interior, one of the best if not the best infotainment systems, air suspension, massive features/equipment list were all barely mentioned or not mentioned at all. Yet they talked about the MDX Infotainment system (how bad it is) for 5 minutes straight. I think if off-roading was given even a small category for points (which it really wasn't) the Jeep would have easily won. Just seems like they glossed over the JGC because it has won before.

It seems like everyone was leaning towards Jeep being the best, except for Kim (the guy on the left with a baseball hat). He seemed clueless. I have driven many jeeps over the years, and the 14 is by far the nicest, and has the most improvement in design and technology. Sorry to say this, but I think he is a redneck who came in hating jeep before he even got in it. He was biased against it from the start. It was so obvious when you watch the video. There are even a few people in the video who come outright and say that he is wrong.
It floors me that they picked the Yugo (Subaru) over the Ferrari (Jeep). I have lost all respect for Motor Trend.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I agree, that Kim guy had a major negative predisposition with Jeep. Some of the other voters batently said he was completely wrong. I honestly don't think you have to know jack crap about cars to be one of these magazine editors. It shows in spades.

While the Subaru is a good value, that's about where it ends. I don't think it came close to winning any other category besides value and did drive fairly good on the road as it should being a 3,600 lb car and not an SUV.

Well, I am partially correct:

According to Robert Casey, the transportation curator at the Henry Ford Museum, the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) was the first true sport utility vehicle in the modern understanding of the term.[6] Developed under the leadership of AMC's François Castaing

They didn't mention anything about having electrical or navigation problems on any of the four different 2014 Grand Cherokees in their test. So I'm not sure where you're getting your info...

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I own 2 Subarus. Including the 2009 Forester which is another SUV of the Year.

The problem is with the panelist, the criteria and the competition. The Forester is NOT an SUV, it is a crossover. But when crossovers are lumped with SUVs, the SUVs are put at a disadvantage.

Quote:
The Criteria

Design Advancement

The judges are looking for well-executed exterior and interior styling, innovative vehicle packaging, and good selection and use of materials. Engineering Excellence

Total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing, and dynamics; and cost-effective technology that benefits consumers. Performance of Intended Function

How well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do. Efficiency

The judges consider fuel efficiency and carbon footprint size relative to the vehicle's competitive set. Safety

The judges take into account each vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants during an accident. Value

Each vehicle's price and equipment levels are compared with those of vehicles in the same market segment.
Subarus are consistently (some of) the safest cars on the road. Look them up on Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Subaru EYESIGHT system (similar to Jeep's FCW with Crash Mitigation) is the only one that brought the car to a complete stop and avoided the crash. I put the link up on this forum some two weeks ago.

Subaru also has some of the best AWD systems, LSDs and electronically controlled gearboxes with torque distributions that can be controlled by the driver (DCCD). Of course, the STI drivetrain will NOT be found on the Forester...but the new Forester comes with the equivalent of Jeep's
(and Toyota's and Land Cruiser's and ... whoever else's) Brake Lock Differential. Subaru calls it X-MODE and it does not come with 4-LO. That being said, in 2007, in Europe I drove a Forester with a 4-LO gearbox (factory).

Anyone should easily see that when competing by those 6 criteria, the Grand Cherokee stands little chance in several categories:
- it is not fuel efficient
- it is a lot more expensive
and it is no better at
- safety
- performance of intended function

If this SUOTY was a challenge for river crossing rock climbing an towing...of course Jeep would win or perform better than the Forester. But that was not the criteria.

Maybe I am biased, but interior and exterior and use of materials etc. I believe the Jeep wins that hands down. I also believe that interior space and comfort is also important..

Just my opinion.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

My girlfriend and I test drove the Forrester this weekend. Understand this, the Subi feels/rides like an econo-box compared to the JGC. It's not even close. Don't get me wrong, I have been very critical of the JGC on these forums (check my prior posts) so I am no Jeep fanboy. But quite honestly, the Jeep is in a different class. It feels like a tank when you drive it. It is much quieter and way more refined.

I agree, it is a cross-over. The subaru can tow 1,500 lbs. About the same as my bicycle.

Just a few other things to note; the diesel JGC is just as fuel efficient as the Subaru which weighs 2,000 lbs less. That is just crazy.

Personally, when I think SUV I think 4x4 off-road, towing, space, comfortable high seat, heavier/durable built like a tank.

I don't think of something like the Subaru that is light/flimsy built like a small car, isn't high, can't tow, spartan interior etc. Looks like something my 85 year old grandmother would drive.
