Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

And there are cheaper options in the Jeep lineup if price and fuel economy is what you're after. The fact is, SUVOY from Motor Trend means nothing anymore. I have been a subscriber of this rag for a few years and will not be renewing my subscription. A few years back when they picked the Volt as the car of the year was a joke. Last year the ATS as luxury sedan of the year because of the 4 banger turbo when it costs the same as the BMW??? I'm sure advertising dollars mean more then the actual comparison.

I never gave Motor Trend much credibility. In the good old days when I actually had car magazine subscriptions, I trusted Car and Driver reviews, was fascinated by Road and Track's F-1 reports, amused at the quirky reports in Automobile magazine, and tried to comprehend the way Motor Trend came up with its conclusions.

Never agreed too much with Motortrend either but the Subie should not be getting the bashing it is here. It has had some major updating even though some have said it has not changed. It has a whole new interior and IP even though some say they see them around and the interior looks dated. Its new for '14, the ones you see are older models. Its getting knocked for off-road capability, but its proven itself for years and had the same ground clearance as the non-air suspension jeep. It gets knocked for having a CVT, yet no one here has driven it. Motortrend said it was the best CVT they have driven. Someone said that the gas mileage of the diesel is the same as the Forester, but that is the turbo model that's quicker than a Hemi. It also costs less than a Laredo when you load it up in top trim. Yes its no contest for the jeep in a true off road environment, but few owners of either will ever go off road. We were actually thinking of getting the new forester as a second car for my wife. Seeing this makes me want to consider it even more. I know this is a jeep forum, but Subarus always have been great vehicles.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I was in my neighbors 2013 Forester last week. I will say that the boxer engine is noisy compared to the luxury quietness/smoothness of my hemi. I also hated the looks of the thing. But my neighbor seems to like it. Thats all that matters.

Not saying it is bad, just saying Jeep should have won - hands down. I took a tour of the JNAP plant today with Chevy boy, Marlon, Vtail, and Brainstormer. It was an awesome experience, and trust me, it is the best SUV on the market.

I actually like the Subaru interior better in the pics. Have to see it in person though. The jeep has too much silver painted plastic around the touchscreen and the shifter. Its what Japanese luxury brands were using 8 years ago. Look at the older Infinity and Acura interiors. I prefer the plastic to be matte finish soft touch than shiny fake metal. The jeep is definitely nice for an American vehicle, but it still has some catching up to do to be at the luxury level of the Germans. It's a great value though for what it has. That's what makes it appealing. I've owned a few BMWs and Audis, as well as a VW. I've also had several Ford trucks and vans for business. I would rank the jeep above any F-150 or 250 but not as nice as the Audi. I would say its pretty in line with what you get from VW which isn't a bad thing. Remember that the Germans are a bit more money. Look at things like the A pillar and headliner materials, the cutouts and finished edges of the headliner, hard plastics where you touch. That is the small differences that seperates it.

Subaru Outback.

2005 Acura TSX

notice the use of silver painted plastics in both. This is where the new Forester steps away from that. That's what jeep needs to do. The Acura was there base model from 9 years ago too.

Let's see hand stitched leather throughout with open pore wood accents with one of the best designed center stack, instrument cluster/infotainment systems in the world with alcantara pillars and headliner, heated and ventilated seats with 19-speaker H/K audio

vs

Two tone contrast plastic panels with econobox center stack and instrument cluster with shiny silver painted accents like the door grab handles, vertical risers supporting the center stack and dash trim with budget sound

Ya, the Subaru definitely has the better interior.

The subaru to me has about the same amount of painted plastic:

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

There are better interior pictures for the Subaru

Actually you should go here:
SUBARU | Forester | Interior 360

If I didn't have a Forester already and if I didn't need a larger vehicle, I would have bought the Forester. End of story. Except that I would have gone two steps farther (since I just love tinkering with Subarus):

I have access to two markets (through marriage or...birth) where Subaru cars come with nicer materials, and better specifications: ASIA and EUROPE. And I also have the Subaru friends to boot, in both markets.

Had I purchased a 2014 Forester, it would have been the XT.
  • Its engine and transmission would have made it into the Legacy (105,000 miles).
  • From Europe I would get the crate 2.0 L diesel engine with the 6 speed manual.
Subaru are like LEGO. With enough perseverance anything can be installed into anything. The Forester is based on the Impreza chassis. Which is based on my model year Legacy chassis. There was a time when things were really bolt on, probably less so these days but not concerned. The economics of bringing a diesel Forester in America is not there - at 36,000 EURO plus freight...NO WAY - I considered it multiple times. There was a time in 2010-2011 when I wanted to bring the diesel engine here for my Forester but it coincided with the Greece warehouse (continental warehouse for Europe) closing down and I lost all the contacts I had. I made other contacts in the mean time but I had also changed my plans.

Here's the specs for the diesel engines
SUBARU | Forester | Specifications | 2.0XT / 2.0D / 2.0D Premium / 2.0D Sport

Just because we don't get the coolest Subaru vehicles, it doesn't mean that Subaru is not a worthy vehicle. I venture to say that in off-road, a proper 2.0 diesel with the low gearing and X-Mode, would have no problem hanging out with your basic Limited (no air suspension, QT-2). And to a lesser extent, even the American XT with the turbo and CVT.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I am sure the Forester is a fine vehicle if you can get past the looks and don't do any off-roading or towing. I was just mainly commenting that there is no way the Forester interior is nicer than the JGC.

If they brought the diesel and the upgraded versions of the interior over and changed the looks to be less soccer-mom, it would definitely be very interesting!
