Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Your buddy has a 2013. The 2014 is all new and has shed 800 pounds. The motor trend article shows the 2014 is indeed quicker in both 0-60 and the quarter mile.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

I found this video and was kinda bothered by the fact that the WK2 got stuck at almost every pass while the outback was not only able to get through it but also tow the Jeep out.. Sure, its not a forester, but still the same vehicle. And lastly, while the jeep driver seems to be out of his element, still interesting to see the Subaru making it happen.

Glad I put on my Duelers...

Someone needs to teach that guy how to drive that Jeep in the mud! You notice how fast they go through in the Subaru and then just stop in the middle with the GC, then back up just enough to bury yourself deeper. What a genious.

Yea, thats what I mean by being out of his element. Even with that, it did seem there was more confidence with the subaru than with the Jeep. I am assuming that there was also a difference in tire choices as well.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Never saw the Jeep driver rock his tires side to side to get out. Seemed very inexperienced. However, we all started as a off road virgin at one time. At least he was smart enough to go with a second vehicle to get pulled out.
I have been to Jeep Jamborees where I have seen numerous Jeeps get stuck. That is why you should always off road with other vehicles. Nice when you have someone in front, and someone in the rear. One time we were going thru a stump field, and the only way to get a guy off a stump was by pulling him backwards - would have been tough getting the front Jeep behind him, as it was too narrow of a path. Glad we had our Jeep behind him. He has stock tires, and was inexperienced. Had the wife's Wrangler and pulled him right off.

Driving through mud is just a function of traction (tires), speed and ground clearance.

Driving slowly through mud with street tires in a 5,000lb vehicle = clueless.

Totally agree. Now, I know that airing down during the trips on the sand is recommended, but what about mud? Kind of a mud noob too.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Most auto magazine writers prefer "car-like" rides unless the magazine is specific to trucks or 4x4s. As others noted, the U in SUV is important to me. I want something that can tow 5,000 lbs, sit's up nice and high to drive through winter snow, and pull out people who can't drive through winter snow or sandy beaches.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

But, the Jeep in that video came with on-road/off-road tires from the factory!

So, I have been following this thread since the start and last night, I looked on both Jeep and Subaru's websites. On paper, the subaru has more ground clearance, cargo area, head room, etc than the Jeep. On towing, the Jeep is much better, but think how many people actually tow (I don't for example) and if someone has real towing needs, they may most likely get a V8 or a pickup truck. Looks are subjective as well... some like the Subaru's and others (like us) like the Jeeps.

It is a good thing the Jeep did not win the SUVOTY award... now they have something to work hard and win next year. I still do not consider the Forester as an SUV, maybe a crossover. Still, for the price, utility and fuel efficiency, the Forester is not bad.

Cheers,
-A

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Forester ground clearance: 8.7 inches
JGC ground clearance: 11.3 inches

That difference is huge considering the higher you go, the harder it is to design properly.

Not to mention the Sabura doesn't have a low range transfer case or any of the off-road features of the JGC. It is designed simply as an all weather mall crawler.

The Sabura only has more cargo volume with the rear seats down. With the seats up the JGC has more.

Not sure why we are comparing the vehicles though, as no one is going to be cross shopping a small car-based 4-cylinder fugly car with the JGC.
