Last year the ATS as luxury sedan of the year because of the 4 banger turbo when it costs the same as the BMW??? I'm sure advertising dollars mean more then the actual comparison.
I've been reading since the days of Walt Woron.
The COTY, TOTY, ICOTY, SUVOTY is not a comparison test by any means, per Motor Trend.
The award is based on fitness of purpose, new ideas, bad ideas, flying pigs, and the amount of moonshine or other mind altering drugs consumed by the staff doing the testing and rating.

There have been a number of infamous awards in pretty much any of the various pig of the year awards--longtime readers tend to be more surprised when they get it right as viewed by history or real enthusiasts of the breed.

Some of us have even noted that frequently Consumer Reports even gets it right more often than POTY does.

A Vega?!?! The "Krap" cars?!!!! The Renault Alliance?!!!

With those illustrious forewinners, perhaps we should be tickled pink the GC did not win that award... as opposed to winning their comparison test ?June '13?

Whatever you do, don't stop, or slow down, or step on the gas too hard.
Momentum can get you thru mud with crappy tires [such as stock].

Aka, don't learn to drive thru mud from Motor Trend dweebs.

I'm guessing you at least were being sarcastic, but any car reviewer who thought so is an idiot!!

I have been to Jeep Jamborees where I have seen numerous Jeeps get stuck. That is why you should always off road with other vehicles. Nice when you have someone in front, and someone in the rear. One time we were going thru a stump field, and the only way to get a guy off a stump was by pulling him backwards - would have been tough getting the front Jeep behind him, as it was too narrow of a path. Glad we had our Jeep behind him. He has stock tires, and was inexperienced. Had the wife's Wrangler and pulled him right off.
Really good training is military.

"What's that soldier, you got stuck in the mud on the tactical training course?"
"Well, soldier, guess who is gonna get that vehicle UNSTUCK!"

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Curious after seeing this thread, I went out and drove one two hours ago, the Limited version with the turbo-charged 4. It looks and drives nicely. I had a new Sentra rental car with a CVT for a week earlier this year, and the Subaru is most definitely not like that. It works very well. What I like: the view out is excellent, it offers cloth seats with leather/vinyl surrounds, a back-up camera, decent storage places for phones and such, good fuel mileage, and headrests which do not bother you like those in the Hyundai Santa Fe. What I don't like: the pull-up parking brake and small navigation screen. It also has the lack of rear cargo compartment width of all current mid-sized SUVs except the Santa Fe.

Anyone remember Motor Trend awarding the Mustang ll as car of the year?

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

Just watched the video and can see what others say that the one MT Editor seemed to have a strong dislike to the Jeep GC and yet it still finished right up there anyways. The MT editors seemed more impressed with the 2014 JGC than the previous model they tested and though it didn't finish first I get the feeling the editors who liked it had it first in their minds. Also nice to see that Subaru is refining their vehicles also.

Now I test drove a new Forester back in 2010 while I was driving a 2007 v6 Rav4 limited awd and I came away feeling the Subaru was a nice vehicle but the engine and interior trim seemed less refined then what I was used to enough that I decided it wasn't the vehicle for me. After driving some other cars and deciding my Rav4 though nice was a bit too small and the AWD wasn't all that in snow I opted for a new Toyota Highlander since I care more about snow/bad roads then off-roading and the Highlander handled snow/bad roads well. Now when the wk2 JGC came out I found myself eyeing them up every time I saw one but a test drive of a 2013 v6 model left me liking the looks/feel but performance wasn't what I felt it should be. I decided to give the 2014 v6 model with the 8 speed a drive and what a difference it made and now I own one.

The Jeep GC and Subaru Forester are in two different markets but both are very good vehicles that do their jobs quite well and I applaud automakers improving their vehicles and keeping a competitive edge to their models.

Re: 2014 Motor Trend SUVOTY

The Subaru shares a very significant defect with the 4Runner - a hard spot low down in the seat. The 4Runner guys seems to have determined it is a part of an active anti-whiplash headrest system. It would be no surprise if both companies were using the same seat supplier. I sure feel no such thing in the Grand Cherokee and Durango! My wife was not with me yesterday when I looked at the Subaru, so we stopped by and drove the same one. The seat had bothered me yesterday, and was worse today, as we drove further. I got out, and just as in the 4Runner, found the hard part inside the lower seat back (it has nothing to do with the lumbar support, which is higher up).
