2014 Oil Consumption Question

Ok so this is my first Chrysler product and I was wondering what is considered normal oil consumption in 3000 miles for the 5.7 hemi? I am running 5w20 Pennzoil ultra synthetic. GC has 9000 miles on it so well out of the break-in period. What would be considered normal consumption and what would be considered too much consumption. and what are others experiencing? Thanks!

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

Normal would be about 0 or negligible.

Too much would be getting to the add mark between oil changes.

I used a half a quart or half way down on the hash marks which does not sound that bad generally I guess. But if one followed the 10K change interval it would be one and a half to two quarts low by the time you change it. Not sure I would be comfortable with that. I am changing twice a year at 6k but for those following the EVIC just wondered what your consumption was looking like. My past cars never used any in 3k so just wasn't sure if a little more consumption was a normal hemi thing or not.

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

Mine was down almost a whole quart in the first 1000 miles. I changed to Mobil1 0W-20 at that time and it hasn't used any since (3000 miles).

I did the same first oil change at 1000 but switched to the Pennzoil ultra synthetic 5w20. Thanks for the reply because I was wondering if the change to synthetic had anything to do with it. I am not concerned about half a quart in 3k as long as it doesn't start using anymore than that.
Did you do any type of a breakin the first couple hundred like the manual said, the occasional full throttle like it said or just drove normal?

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

Followed the manual driving carefully with just a few blasts of full throttle per the manual.

I was gonna ask if you put synthetic in early.

It may be an old myth, but I've been taught to never do that. Don't touch the factory oil.

Let it wear in for at least 5000 miles.

First thing I thought when I read the opening post was I bet he put synthetic in at insanely low miles.

Ya did just that.

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

Yep, old myth. Chrysler/Jeep says full synthetic can be used anytime "as long it meets Chrysler's specifications for the original factory oil".

They factory fill the SRT with Pennzoil ultra synthetic which is what I used so figured it would be ok.

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

A lot of cars come out of the factory with synthetic oil. Never too early to switch.
Regarding consumption, the engines can "consume" oil up to the 5k mark or higher. Common misconception is that it is burning oil when most often it is oil vapor flashed off.

Re: 2014 Oil Consumption Question

Doesn't matter what it's filled with. It may have special additives. Let it break in normally. Oil wears down, even synthetic. Let it wear down.
