Re: 2014 Overland... Rear-ended after 6 days of ownership

"Diminished value" is the drop in resale value after CarFax etc. records an accident. When I was rearended by a F*rd -150 truck whilke stopped in a line in an exit lane I wound up getting the tailgate and rear valence replaced & part of the final settlement was for DV.

Truck had front end folded in a V, was leaking fluids, and both airbags deployed. I am a strong believer in the factory towing package as a safety item. Note that the gaps were still correct and both the tailgate and flipper worked and sealed properly. Alignment was not affected.

Fortunately I tend to leave quite a bit of room in front so that car was not involved.

Accident was documented since I had Torque running a log & could see the exact time and location (lat/lon) of the accident and even that I was pushed a few feet. If there had been any dispute I was ready to start subpoenaing cell phone records.

Re: 2014 Overland... Rear-ended after 6 days of ownership

My Jeep was rear ended almost exactly the same way about 3 months old. My damage was very similar, and all I wound up replacing was the center plastic surround around the trailer hitch.

As for diminished value? Seriously guys? Its a minor fender bender...it happens all the time. If the vehicle were not brand new he probably would just buff it up and keep on keepin' on.

Unless you're a body and fender guy it's kinda hard to buff it and keep going. There are too many complex components that could be damaged in what was thought to be a minor accident so better to be safe then sorry later. Document all accidents and makes sure your a$$ is covered.

After reading all this, all I could picture in my head was this:

My wife had a Highlander that got tapped by another car. We took it to our insurance company as a precaution to ensure the energy absorbtion bumber below the regular bumper was ok. No damage but recorded it got hit.

Later when we traded it in, CarFax showed it got hit and every dealer low balled us on the car. SO YES DIMINISHED VALUE! Until it happens to you, you don't realize how CarFax can F#*$ your car's value up.

I hit a deer 3 weeks after buying my 13 GC. $4500 in damage and it was only plastic parts and pieces! Good news; it shows up on my CarFax as a service at a dealer, not accident! So you win some and lose some!

What's wrong with someone taking extra precaution? Unlike you, maybe they want to save themselves the loss of trade-in or final sale.

Or unless you have a good connection with your body shop and they can fix it off the books that way carfax doesn't know. You can also get that deminished value back by submitting your alleged loss to your insurance company that carfax is reporting to dealers, they do give checks back for that.

Because at some point it gets to be a little bit ridiculous, and it drives up insurance costs for all of us. You have a little fender bender, something that only damages the lower trim of the bumper...not even the bumper cover itself...and we start talking about diminished value claims? Its not even $1,000 in damage.

I've sold and traded in lots of cars that have had minor repairs to bumpers and things like that...I have never had a problem with loss of value or a Carfax...including a Prius that had $3,000 worth of hail damage repaired. It never even came up when I traded it in on the Jeep. Either it wasn't on the Carfax or they didn't care. The front bumper of my previous Lexus was hit in a parking lot, replaced and covered by insurance...no mention when I traded it in.

While its good that all worked out for you it doesnt for a lot of other people so you do what's best for your given situation.

Re: 2014 Overland... Rear-ended after 6 days of ownership

The issue I see with CarFax is that it doesnt list the severity of the accident. We got tapped and the dealers we went to said that they couldn't know if that is true or not...tap vs more serious damage...the CarFax is the passport of the car and if it goes to the wrong country...well you know...

Glad you didn't have those experiences but here in NJ I got it from 4+ dealer. Maybe I will go block the traffic in front of their stores in revenge

Happened to me the first day I drove to work in my brand new 2010 SRT8. Worst part is I saw it coming. Stop and go traffic, we all stopped and I glanced in my rear view to see the top of a woman's head (she was looking down texting).

I literally picked the car up Saturday and this was Monday so I had fewer than 50 miles on it and was 10 minutes in to my commute.

My takeaway, don't work yourself up, write down everything so you can recall all the specifics as you go through the process, open the claim under your insurance so it gets fixed fast and you control where the work gets done and then let the insurance companies battle it out. It takes longer to get your deductible but is much less stressful IMHO.

Best of luck and guaranteed you be back in love before you know it.

P'S. Picked up my 2012 SRT this past Saturday and Monday on my drive in guess what flashback I had......
