2014 Overland Spare Tire

New Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with Goodyear 265/50R20 Fortera tires. I went to the spare tire bin and checked the spare tire. It turned out to be a new Kumo 245 instead of the Goodyears 265 on the car. Dealer says that's the way they shipped them from the factory. Anyone else get a different name brand and size spare tire?

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

Glad we have one at all. Seems to be a cost cutting measure. A lot of new cars have an electric slime pump in place of a spare.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

The Kumho is the same outer diameter. They use the skinnier width for both space (not sacrifice ground clearance or cargo load height) and weight considerations.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

Thanks guys.... doesn't exactly give me much confidence after seeing that tire in the spare bin, considering it's on an 18 inch rim vs. the stock four 20 inchers.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

I don't have any issue with this at all. The tire diameter is the same and it's a full size tire instead of the ever-popular "donut" or a can of foam. It's a good quality tire and the steel rim is perfectly suited to it's purpose which is to get you where you're going if you have a flat on your regular tires. The rim diameter is immaterial to performance...it's the tire diameter that counts! (The tires on JGC, regardless of whether or not they are on 20" wheels or 18" wheels are the same diameter. They have to be so that the speedometer and odometer are not "off") The sightly narrower tread width on the space is to allow it to sit in the storage compartment such that the lid can fit flush...they only have so much space to work with.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

And you don't want to mix different tire OD's on a vehicle... especially on a 4WD.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

If you do not like the spare offered, go ahead and buy a factory wheel and matching tire. I changed out my steel wheel to the aluminum wheel to match the Summit. Love it. I just had to weld on an extension to the hold down bolt. It fits perfectly!

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

It's not about the tire, it's about the OCD.

Re: 2014 Overland Spare Tire

All carmakers are doing away with their matching spares. I've had 6 Lexus cars going back to 1998, and every one of them has had a spare on a matching rim until my 2013 GS350, including a couple that were lesser models than the GS.

Why? Because wheels are getting bigger, and heavier. With the ever increasing demands of low MPG figures, its a logical place to save weight...and size for load floor. All those other Lexus models had 16s or 17s, and the GS has 18s and optional 19s. I don't see any need to haul around a 20" spare wheel in the GC.

Anyways, its probably been 12-13 years since I've had a spare tire on a car. All those shiny nice matching rims just sat in the trunk.
