some of the options in the summit just dorsn't make sense... but again like someone else said if can make the overland a summit and the summit an overland then why have teo models! I went for the summit because I don't do any off road even though I like the look of the overland regarding its "jeep" blood line!

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

I think the Overland should have a black interior with silver color plastics and piano black aluminum applique. Instead of bronzish color plastics and walnut-wood applique. And an option to get painted mirrors and handles. And black clear coat exterior choice. That would be the perfect Grand Cherokee to me.

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

Y'all have me leaning back toward the Overland today. My two main hangups are that I would listen to the radio every day - the summit would make that daily experience better. The second is the tow hooks.

I suppose I could always upgrade the stereo - put in some 6x9's or something.

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

Yes. Upgrade the stereo. My BMW had the logic 7 (Harmon kardon) stereo and it sounded good but if I were buying it new, I would have gone completely stock and put the money towards some audiophile grade equipment and I still would have come out ahead.

I don't know of a forum for Jeep audiophiles but I'm sure there's one out there that can tell you exactly what you need to get better than Summit quality stereo for half the cost and no loss of off-roading potential.

Start small replace the dash and door speakers then go from there after listening to various forms of media for a while. Radio vs satellite vs mp3s all sound differently when played just like jazz and rock and classical all sound differently when listened to.

I too am on the fence between an Overland and a Summit - the stereo and ORAII are the biggest pain points for me - I want both. I don't like the Summit rims, and there seems to be just as much chrome on the Summit front end as on the Overland, just differently styled.

If I went with the Summit, I would plastidip the rims flat black and then powder coat if I liked it. I would also consider painting a lot of the other chrome pieces in flat black. Flat black is sexy

It frustrates me that the summit will not support ORAII, though it seems the skid plates can be added, leaving just the tow hooks as the only missing piece.

Whats more important - tow hooks or an upgraded stereo and an interior color I prefer?

Today I'm leaning towards the stereo, but when she sinks into the mud, I'll be kicking myself for not having tow hooks.

I compared the two, but I just finally leaned toward the Summit (it is more SRT than Overland).

My biggest hangup was also the tow hooks. But Mopar says that they can be added to the '14 Summit. All of the frame mounts are still there, I just have to figure out how to get through the bumper/grill. I asked my dealer to add the tow hooks to make them try first, we will see what they say tomorrow when I pick it up.

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

Oh, cool, let us know.

I like the argument that I could upgrade the stereo for less, and with components of my choosing. I'll probably go that route. Would be good to know if they could install the hooks behind the fascia.

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

'Upgrading the stereo" isn't such an easy option anymore because of how everything is tied together electronically in the vehicle. Swapping out the speakers and adding other sound processing beyond the head unit is less traumatic and can improve sound (still a very subjective thing), but replacing the head unit is a tough row to hoe these days. It's not just a sound system, but touches virtually everything for control and notification. This is one of the reasons the Overland vs Summit decision is so difficult for some folks at this point. But given you can add the "off road" stuff to a Summit if you want to (yea, the tow hooks require a bit of re-engineering, but it can be done), if the high-end audio is the apple of your eye, it might be the way to go.

Is there really that big of a difference in head unit between the summit and overland? I assumed the difference was mainly the amp and speakers

Re: 2014 Overland vs. Summit

Decided to make this my first post. Just bought the summit but was having the same problem because I really like the "look" of the overland better. I went to the dealership four different times to sit in the two vehicles. I just think the huge difference in the sound system....and it is huge, was the final breaking point for me. Like someone else said, you will listen to the radio every day. The suede is a nice addition as well and the summit just feels more refined. But then again I will not ever be off-roading so that probably had something to do with it.
