It only gets worse as you move inside with cheap plastics apparantly modeled after my kids transformers. The JGC has now way outclassed Toyo on several fronts. I only worry about reliability.
Well I traded in my 2005 V8 Limited Toyota 4Runner for a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.
My 4Runner was also super solid and reliable. In fact, there was not one mechanical or electrical issue requiring a trip to the dealership while I owned it. The only issue was related to the exhaust & the CATs. I really wanted another 4Runner but like you, I felt that the new 5th Gen 4Runner was a serious downgrade from the 4th Gen ones. Heck, they don't even offer a V8 anymore!
My 2012 WK2 has had multiple issues. The Blind Spot Detection system stopped working several times. It was finally fixed after 3 trips to the dealership. There was also a problem with the something lose under the front passenger seat. And my brakes have had issues with squealing almost from the start that still haven't been fully addressed.
All in all, it hasn't been a picnic with this Jeep. I'm not a super happy owner but I'm still not quite ready to throw in the towel yet either. Most of the issues have been addressed but I worry about future problems (excessive under body rust & burnt headlight housings due to poor design to name a few). I worry about the long term reliability of this vehicle and will try & get rid of it sooner rather then later. But I still might purchase another WK2 if I feel the issues have been properly addressed (2015 model).
